Background / History
Orochimaru began as Kagura, Tsunade, and Jiraiya's teammate under Hiruzen Sarutobi. Though quiet and observant during their early missions, he possessed a conspicuous desire to study the Sharingan—something Kagura noticed and tried to address before it could lead him toward the darker path of the original timeline. 10 18
His fascination with ninjutsu and longevity made him vulnerable to Danzō's influence in the original course of events. Kagura instead supported his research within limits, supplying blood samples, scientific ideas, and eventually access to legitimate research avenues. Kagura also used Kotoamatsukami to alter Orochimaru's will so that he would keep away from Danzō. 110 111
Orochimaru's Hashirama Cell and Kagura Cell transplant project initially received Konoha's backing and volunteer subjects, but every human transplant failed: recipients either lost the intended Wood Release properties or died from rejection. When Hiruzen suspended the project after extensive casualties, Orochimaru became desperate enough to consider using infants as subjects. Kagura redirected him toward creating artificial humans directly from the cells, and Orochimaru abandoned the idea. 189 190 191
The new approach succeeded. Orochimaru created an artificial infant using Kagura's cells, later called Yamato, and drew further inspiration from Tobirama's Impure World Reincarnation after receiving access to the Forbidden Jutsu Room. 227 228
By the later war period, Orochimaru had achieved a form of eternal life through Living Corpse Reincarnation and artificial-human research. Freed from the urgency of a limited lifespan, he became less restless and more methodical in pursuing knowledge. 288 390
Appearance
Orochimaru is pale-skinned and long-haired. His appearance becomes markedly unkempt when consumed by failed research.
- Pale complexion. 190
- Long hair, shown disheveled and dull during his Wood Release research crisis. 190
- Bloodshot eyes and deep dark circles after prolonged sleep deprivation. 190
- Possesses an unnaturally flexible, snake-like body; he can extend his neck and other body parts over great distances. 26
Personality
Orochimaru is calm, analytical, and unusually composed in dangerous situations. He remains level-headed when surrounded, confronted by Danzō, or facing battlefield setbacks, preferring to assess information before acting. 145 317 318
Research is his central obsession. Failed experiments can drive him into severe distress, while a promising result can immediately consume his full attention. He is willing to accept Kagura's advice when it offers a better scientific direction, but his pragmatism remains severe: he killed the disobedient summon Manshe and used its genetic material to engineer a replacement. 190 191 412
Kagura's companionship and guidance substantially change his trajectory. Orochimaru remains morally unsettling and fascinated by power, eyes, corpses, and Kekkei Genkai, but he stays loyal to Konoha rather than accepting Danzō's offer to join Akatsuki. 111 318 501
Abilities & Skills
Snake-Based Body Techniques
Orochimaru adapts his body in snake-like ways that make conventional restraints and close-range attacks unreliable.
- Can stretch his neck and body parts over distances exceeding ten meters. 26
- Escaped Kushimaru Kuriarare's Nuibari bindings by splitting into countless small snakes. 59
- Can reappear from an opponent's shadow and coil his body around them in distorted positions. 59
- Uses molting to leave behind a discarded skin and evade attacks that reach his apparent body. 380
Sage Mode
Orochimaru used Sage Mode during his Chūnin Exam battle with Kushimaru, transforming into snakes to escape Nuibari's threads and launch an ambush. 59
- Its snake transformation bypassed an otherwise lethal binding technique. 59
- Later accounts distinguish his abilities from Jiraiya's Sage Arts, emphasizing Orochimaru's reliance on research-driven ninjutsu rather than raw physical enhancement. 380
Living Corpse Reincarnation
Orochimaru developed Living Corpse Reincarnation after studying Impure World Reincarnation, achieving what he describes as eternal life. 288
- Removes much of the urgency that previously drove his research. 288 390
- Its exact side effects and limits are not established. 288
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru is a specialist in Impure World Reincarnation, using artificial bodies and prepared coffins to summon deceased high-level shinobi.
- First demonstrated by summoning Senju Hashirama against Danzō's forces; Hashirama's body began to collapse after using Wood Release, allowing Orochimaru to collect crucial data. 320 321
- Improved the technique so that, with the reincarnated person's cells added, summoned individuals can reportedly exert 95% of their living strength. 436
- Seals summoned historical figures into scrolls for transport and deployment. 474
- Favors quality over quantity; he fielded seven elite reincarnated shinobi, including Hashirama and Tobirama. 496
- His chakra reserves limit him to a single-digit number of reincarnated summons. 496
Artificial-Human Research
Orochimaru specializes in cultivating artificial humans from powerful cells and bloodlines.
- Shifted from failed Wood Release transplants to growing artificial humans directly from Hashirama Cells and Kagura's cells. 191
- Created Yamato, an artificial human with Wood Release potential. 227 228
- Studied Hiruko's corpse, which had fused multiple Kekkei Genkai, as research material. 216
- Worked on artificial humans based on Tobirama's cells, later considering White Zetsu material to resolve their limited lifespan. 410
- Cultivated an artificial human based on Kimimaro and became deeply interested in the power of its Kekkei Genkai. 461
- Prepared six artificial bodies for Kagura's “Six Paths,” installing Black Receivers before Kagura assumed control of them. 436 466
Tactical Analysis
Orochimaru is capable of operating independently in war zones and identifying enemy strategy from limited evidence.
- Correctly inferred that Akatsuki possessed detailed intelligence on Konoha's squads because of a mole within the village. 318
- Recognized Yamanaka Fū's allegiance to Danzō and understood the likely fate of Fū's Genin team. 318
- Uses prepared coffins and summons instead of direct confrontation when doing so provides a superior tactical advantage. 308 318
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Scrolls containing prepared coffins for Impure World Reincarnation. 308
- Scrolls used to seal and transport reincarnated Hokage. 474
- Laboratory and culture tanks for artificial-human research. 461 466
- Borrowed Mangekyō Sharingan specimen supplied by Kagura for research. 111
Summoned Beasts
- Little White — A large white snake engineered from Manshe's preserved genes combined with Orochimaru's own cells. It is unusually dependent on Orochimaru and treats him as a father. 412
- Manshe — Orochimaru's former summon. Manshe demanded sacrifices and refused summons without its conditions being met; Orochimaru arranged its death after deciding an uncontrollable power was a liability. 412
Relationships
- Uchiha Kagura — Close friend, research collaborator, and the primary force preventing Orochimaru's fall into darkness. Kagura supplies knowledge and materials, redirects his experiments, and secretly uses Kotoamatsukami to keep him away from Danzō. 110 111 190 410
- Tsunade — Teammate and longtime friend. Orochimaru shows concern for her after her victory over Munashi Jinpachi and asks her to withdraw rather than overextend herself. 59
- Jiraiya — Teammate and longtime friend. They fight together against Karatachi Yagura's Water Mirror Technique during the war. 374 380
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher and Konoha authority who supports Orochimaru's research but halts the Wood Release transplant project after repeated volunteer deaths. 189
- Shimura Danzō — Former associate and later Akatsuki recruiter. Danzō attempts to entice Orochimaru with eternal life, but Orochimaru rejects him because he has already found his own method. 316 317 318
- Anko Mitarashi — Orochimaru's disciple and laboratory assistant. She remains respectful and devoted to him, unlike her counterpart in the original timeline. 287 409
- Senju Hashirama — Summoned by Orochimaru through Impure World Reincarnation; Orochimaru uses the summoning both as combat support and as experimental data. 320 321
- Yamato — Artificial human created by Orochimaru using Kagura's cells. 227 228
