History
Academy and Team 7
Jiraiya attended the Konoha Ninja Academy alongside Tsunade, Orochimaru, and Kagura. Even as a child, he was outspoken and impulsive; he defended Tsunade’s invitation to Kagura’s graduation dinner, then accidentally kissed Kagura after being shoved from a desk. 2
He joined Hiruzen Sarutobi’s Team 7 with Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Kagura. During Hiruzen’s bell assessment, Jiraiya attempted to approach stealthily but fell into a trap. He ultimately failed the assessment while his teammates passed, leaving him discouraged by the gap in their strength. Hiruzen restored his confidence by stressing effort, luck, talent, and a resilient heart. 5 7
Mount Myōboku and the Sannin
Following graduation, Jiraiya sought out the Summoning Technique and was reverse-summoned to Mount Myōboku. After helping Bunta drive away a snake, he was allowed to train with the toads. The Great Toad Sage later declared that Jiraiya was chosen by fate, would travel and write books, and would teach a disciple capable of changing the world. 10
His Mount Myōboku training gave him access to oil-based Fire Style, hair techniques, and powerful toad summons. His growth continued alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade, and the three became known collectively as the Sannin during the conflicts that made the Second Great Ninja War infamous. 13 38 70 112
Travels and disciples
After Kagura and Tsunade married, Jiraiya resumed traveling across the nations under the pretext of gathering material for his books. His journeys also made him one of Konoha’s most valuable intelligence sources. 181 391 447
In the Land of Rain, he took Yahiko and Konan as disciples. He took particular pride in Yahiko’s potential and later watched with satisfaction as Yahiko established and led a recognized Amegakure. 188 229 292 305
Jiraiya also accepted Yamato as his son in name. Yamato was publicly presented as an orphan Jiraiya had found outside the village, concealing his artificial origin and connection to Kagura. Jiraiya chose to personally educate him through travel rather than send him directly to the Ninja Academy. 260 272 383
Preparation against Madara
As Madara’s threat resurfaced, Jiraiya trained younger shinobi and brought Kagura to Mount Myōboku. When the Great Toad Sage refused to teach Kagura Sage Art, Jiraiya accepted Kagura’s unexplained secrets without pressing him, resolving instead to train harder so he could stand beside him in the coming conflict. 421 422 425
He later rejoined Kagura, Orochimaru, and Tsunade for a mission to locate relics and biological material from deceased powerful shinobi, intending to help create a countermeasure to Madara’s Six Paths. 438 439
Appearance
Jiraiya has long white hair that reaches his waist in adulthood, red markings beneath his eyes, and a sturdy build. He wears a red outer jacket over brown clothing, wooden sandals, Konoha forehead protection, and ninja guards on his hands. 38 229
- White or silver hair; it was already distinctive during his Academy years. 2 13
- Red lines beneath his eyes, which become longer as he ages. 2 229
- Typically wears Konoha’s forehead protector rather than the “Oil” headband associated with his other portrayal. 229
- His incomplete Sage Mode gives him altered features, including a notably strange nose. 405
- Years of travel and ordinary aging leave him visibly older than Kagura and Orochimaru. 392
Personality
Jiraiya is boisterous, self-assured, and prone to dramatic declarations, often trying to present himself as stronger or more impressive than he is. His confidence can become carelessness, as shown by his repeated defeats, poor exam preparation, and habit of being caught gathering “material” at bathhouses. 7 15 44 440
Beneath the comic behavior, he is persistent and emotionally resilient. After failing Hiruzen’s assessment, he commits himself to training at Mount Myōboku rather than accepting inferiority to his teammates. He also remains willing to fight for others even when outmatched, such as against Kakuzu and during the effort to save Yahiko and Konan. 7 11 340 492
He is a capable and compassionate mentor. His students develop strong values as well as strength, and he takes genuine pride in Yahiko’s accomplishments. 229 260 305
Abilities & Skills
Toad Summoning
Jiraiya maintains a contract with the toads of Mount Myōboku and can summon toads ranging from small combatants to giants capable of confronting massive enemies.
- Summoned Gamatatsu helps him capture and restrain a Kumogakure examinee during the Chūnin Exam. 47
- Bunta answers his call during a rescue involving enemy ninja. 38
- Giant toad summons fight alongside the other Sannin’s summons against Obito’s Wood Style Buddha. 71
- His summoned toads can transport people through their mouths, including travel to Mount Myōboku. 422
Sage Mode
Jiraiya can enter an incomplete Sage Mode with assistance from Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima.
- The two sages help stabilize his Sage Mode and advise him during battle. 492
- Sage Mode lets him overcome Karatachi Yagura’s Water Mirror copies, which cannot replicate his cooperation with the Toad Sages. 380
- His transformation has a limited duration and cannot be used again immediately after exhaustion or serious injury. 492 500
Hair Techniques
Jiraiya can manipulate his long hair into armor and project it as lethal needles.
- Needle Jizō — Hardens and expands his hair into a defensive shell that deflects kunai and close-range attacks. 13
- Needle Hell — Fires hardened hair needles outward to strike surrounding opponents. 13
- Sage Art: Needle Jizō — In Sage Mode, Fukasaku and Shima can activate his hair roots for sustained rapid-fire needle barrages. 492
- Kakuzu’s regeneration outpaces the damage from the Sage Art version, making it ineffective in a prolonged battle of attrition. 492
Fire Style and Sage Art: Goemon
Jiraiya uses chakra-refined oil in conjunction with Fire Style techniques.
- Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu — Launches burning oil-based fireballs that cannot be extinguished by ordinary rolling or smothering. 13
- Sage Art: Goemon — Jiraiya supplies oil, Fukasaku adds Wind Style, and Shima ignites the mixture with Fire Release. The combined technique creates a wide-area inferno capable of burning through Kakuzu’s Black Veins. 492 493
- Despite its range and destructive power, Goemon does not permanently defeat an Impure World Reincarnation Kakuzu. 493
Ninjutsu Knowledge
Jiraiya possesses a broad ninjutsu repertoire and has learned techniques beyond his original Mount Myōboku style.
- Learned the Rasengan, though he considers even Sage Art: Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan insufficient for destroying Kakuzu’s dispersed body in one attack. 492
- Uses combat judgment to select techniques according to an opponent’s defenses and battlefield scale. 492
- His knowledge of travel routes, informants, and local contacts allows him to obtain intelligence and arrange covert access to foreign territories. 447 458
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — His teacher and Hokage. Hiruzen initially calls him an idiot but encourages him after his failure in the bell assessment. 6 7
- Kagura — Original Team 7 teammate and close friend. Jiraiya accepts Kagura’s secrets without demanding explanations and resolves to become strong enough to fight beside him. 5 81 425
- Tsunade — Original Team 7 teammate and frequent source of physical punishment for his misconduct. He eventually abandons any interest in her out of respect for her marriage to Kagura. 26 177 440
- Orochimaru — Original Team 7 teammate and fellow Sannin. The two cooperate in battle, including against Karatachi Yagura’s Water Mirror Technique. 13 374
- Yahiko — Disciple and Amegakure’s leader. Jiraiya is openly proud of Yahiko’s strength, leadership, and progress. 229 292 305 499
- Konan — Disciple from the Land of Rain who continues to address him as her teacher. 188 305
- Yamato — Son in name and personal student. Jiraiya takes responsibility for raising and training him while keeping his artificial origin hidden. 260 272 383
- Qianyu and Kurenai Yūhi — Members of a wartime team led by Jiraiya alongside Yamato. Qianyu later demonstrates Sage Mode learned under Jiraiya’s instruction. 304 404
