Background
Itozawa transmigrated into this world three years before entering Kouiku. Believing Kouiku offered the fastest path for an unconnected genius to distinguish himself, he spent those years building his physical fitness, martial skills, reaction speed, and broad academic knowledge. He passed the school’s written and oral examinations and received an invitation one month before enrollment. 1
He originally intended to enter Class A and use his knowledge of the original story to act before rivals such as Sakayanagi. Instead, he was assigned to Class B. His certainty that he knew the setting was further undermined when Ayanokoji Kiyotaka and Horikita Suzune—who he expected to see on the enrollment bus—were absent. 1 2
Upon entering Class B, Itozawa instinctively resisted Kanzaki Ryūji’s attempt to erase his analysis of him. The incident awakened his awareness of mental energy and revealed the chessboard-like internal mechanism of his ability. 3
Personality
Itozawa is methodical and highly observant. He habitually studies people, environments, ability interactions, and the hidden rules behind assessments before acting. His knowledge of the original work gives him useful leads, but he recognizes that the world’s deviations make relying on it alone dangerous. 1 23 29
He prefers indirect advantages over open confrontation. He withholds details of his ability from Kanzaki, manipulates Kamuro’s kleptomania in hopes of gaining an asset, and deliberately sows doubt between Yamamura Miki and Sakayanagi’s faction. 5 8 10 31 32
Despite this pragmatism, he repeatedly assumes risk to protect or assist classmates. He shields Amako during Ryuen’s intervention, volunteers to negotiate with Sakagami-sensei, and expends considerable mental power to keep Ichinose’s Halo from exposing her to Nagumo. 13 28 42
Abilities & Skills
Mental Energy Analysis and Conversion
Itozawa’s unnamed ability automatically analyzes intruding mental energy within his Mind Sea. He perceives such energy as chess pieces, allowing him to neutralize attacks that would otherwise affect his memories or consciousness. 3 4
- Converted Kanzaki’s memory-altering mental probe into a gray chess piece, preventing the forced erasure of his analysis. 3
- Analyzed Hoshinomiya’s Charm-type mental energy and severed it from her control, recovering his clarity almost immediately. 4
- Severing absorbed energy appears to slightly strengthen his own mental power. 3 4
- He considers assimilation and counter-invasion possible applications, but avoids them because he does not yet understand their risks. 4
Mental Perception and Defense
His ability initially functioned almost entirely within his Mind Sea, making it difficult for him to detect concealed mental power outside himself. Through repeated exposure to Kanzaki’s energy, his sensing range began expanding outward. 10 13
- Could provide nearby mental protection and perceive mental power within roughly five meters during the natatorium operation. 13
- Detected the workings of Sakagami-sensei’s Sealed Field and sensed that Shibata was restrained inside it. 25
- Later maintained a stable sensing range of approximately one meter, enough to detect that someone had entered Class B’s classroom. 47
- His outward detection remains limited compared with his internal defenses. 10 47
Passive Ability Guidance
After observing how Ichinose’s Halo assimilated Kanzaki’s attacks, Itozawa learned to guide the flow of another person’s passive ability. 33
- Redirected Ichinose’s Halo during Kanzaki’s mental assault, turning its passive conversion process against the attacker. 33
- Can cooperate with Ichinose to improve the control and application of her Halo. 34
- Guided Ichinose’s Halo into a stable dissipation pattern so it would not expose her while confronting Nagumo. 42
- Requires him to understand the target ability’s energy-flow direction; imprecise control can cause backlash. 33
Combat Perception
Itozawa’s mental processing can make an opponent’s movements, energy nodes, and force direction appear exceptionally clear, enabling precise evasions and counters. 14
- Used this perception to evade Ryuen Kakeru’s charges, kicks, punches, and knee strikes. 14
- Targeted weak points such as the intersection of Ryuen’s forearm muscles to disrupt his attacks. 14
- His physical stamina and reaction speed can still fall behind stronger opponents during prolonged combat. 14
Analysis and Negotiation
Itozawa combines academic preparation, deduction, and social maneuvering to identify hidden incentives in school assessments. 1 12 29
- Deduced that the pool-draining assessment could be solved either by persuading Yasuda-sensei or by overwhelming his water-conversion speed with Takahashi Rin’s cooperation. 12
- Realized that Class B’s assessment was also evaluating the teachers, then used that insight to negotiate terms from Sakagami-sensei. 29
- Organized surveillance of Sakayanagi’s group by assigning Kanzaki to monitor Sakayanagi while he and Ichinose followed Kamuro. 49
Equipment / Items
- Energy Stone music box — Purchased from the school convenience store after its melody caused the pink chess piece in Itozawa’s Mind Sea to resonate. 8
Relationships
- Ichinose Honami — Class B classmate and primary collaborator. Itozawa supports her leadership, guides her Halo, and protects her from Nagumo’s attempted manipulation. 5 34 42
- Kanzaki Ryūji — Classmate, mental-ability rival, and frequent tactical partner. Kanzaki’s initial probe awakened Itozawa’s ability, while their later cooperation remains tempered by Itozawa’s caution. 3 12 34
- Kamuro Sumire — Itozawa encouraged her to steal from classmates after purchasing the item she tried to take. Her resulting entanglement with Sakayanagi leaves her resentful of him. 8 24
- Ryuen Kakeru — Rival from Class C. Ryuen disrupted the natatorium operation and fought Itozawa directly; Itozawa later proposed a class-versus-class bet to avoid another direct conflict. 13 14 23
- Sakagami Ryoma — Class C’s homeroom teacher. Itozawa confronted his shadow-based ability, then secured information and assistance through a negotiated transaction. 28 29
- Yamamura Miki — Sakayanagi’s concealed associate. Itozawa detected her despite her camouflage ability and attempted to plant distrust toward Sakayanagi. 31 32
- Sakayanagi Arisu — Class A leader and strategic opponent. Itozawa monitors her faction and seeks to weaken Class A’s unity through Yamamura and Kamuro. 32 49
- Nagumo Miyabi — Student Council Vice President whose attempt to draw Ichinose into his faction prompted Itozawa to intervene. 41 42
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Enrollment and Class B formation — Itozawa enters Kouiku expecting a familiar world, receives a Class B assignment, and becomes positioned beside Ichinose and Kanzaki in the class’s emerging decision-making circle. 1 2 3
- Swimming pool assessment — He supports Ichinose’s leadership, investigates the hostile pool, formulates the plan against Yasuda-sensei, and holds off Ryuen during the operation. 5 12 13 14
- Class C transaction — After betting against Class C, Itozawa uncovers the teacher-evaluation element of the assessment and extracts conditions from Sakagami-sensei, including advance assessment information. 23 29
- Ability development — His mental duel with Kanzaki leads to the discovery that he can guide Ichinose’s passive Halo, significantly improving their cooperation. 33 34
- Student Council application — Itozawa encourages an application to the Student Council but prevents Nagumo from exploiting Ichinose during the submission process. 38 41 42
