Background / History

Dugu Bo belongs to a family afflicted by hereditary Jade Phosphor Snake Poison. Their Martial Soul’s defect causes its toxins to accumulate inside its wielder, with cultivation and poison-related Soul Rings worsening the condition. His son dies in his thirties when his cultivation can no longer suppress the poison, leaving Dugu Yan as Dugu Bo’s only surviving relative 17 19 21.

Unlike many members of his family, Dugu Bo survives long enough to become a Titled Douluo. His medicine garden at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well suppresses much of his accumulated poison, making that breakthrough possible. Before Taichu identifies the location, Dugu Bo does not know the garden’s formal name or the full value of its Immortal Herbs 28.

Spirit Hall attempts to recruit him after he becomes a Titled Douluo. When he refuses, it sends Chrysanthemum Douluo Yue Guan and Ghost Douluo Gui Mei to coerce him, leading to repeated pursuits and lasting hostility. His connection to the Heaven Dou Imperial Family arises from Prince Xue Xing saving his life, rather than a willingness to serve the empire 42 414.

Appearance

  • Earlier public appearance: Usually presents himself as an old man, with a stern expression 21 103.
  • Later appearance: Has skin as smooth as a baby’s and brown hair tinged with green. The change is pronounced enough that the Dai Clan’s offerings fail to recognize him immediately 103.

Personality

Dugu Bo is reclusive and fiercely resistant to coercion. He turns away the gift-bearing visitors who flock to Dugu Manor after his rise to Titled Douluo and returns Emperor Xue Ye’s gifts untouched. Threats from Spirit Hall, Gu Rong, and other powerful figures generally provoke defiance rather than submission 26 41 55 414.

His granddaughter receives a much softer side of him. He fears that her rapid cultivation will hasten her death, gives her a valuable Soul Bone rather than using it himself, and immediately reserves the most suitable Immortal Herb for her despite his own worse condition 21 29 30.

His suspicion of Taichu gradually becomes affection and trust. Their exchanges remain combative and humorous: he resents Dugu Yan siding with Taichu, teases her about keeping a future husband in line, and strikes Taichu on the forehead for calling his herb choice wasteful 28 29 30.

Despite his pride, he can prioritize caution. He restrains Yang Wudi’s desire for revenge when Taichu’s safety is at stake and hesitates to publicize Taichu’s achievements after Spirit Hall’s earlier assassination attempt 177 200.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Rock Flood Dragon Emperor

His evolved Martial Soul combines his original poison abilities with an earth attribute and substantially improved physical combat power 32 201.

  • Evolution: Created by consuming the Earth Dragon Golden Melon; classified as a top-tier Martial Soul without its predecessor’s fatal defect 30 32.
  • Form: A serpent-like flood dragon with short, straight horns, hard scales, limbs, four-toed sickle-shaped foreclaws, and a long, smooth tail. Its scales glimmer in five colors under the light 32.
  • Seventh Soul Skill — Martial Soul Avatar: Manifests the massive flood dragon form, which carries a faint trace of dragon might 136.
  • Flood dragon transformation: Uses a transformation technique that gives him a slight advantage against the Clear Sky Sect’s Fifth Elder 200.
  • Physical strength: Reaches the combat capability of a Power Attack Soul Master. Its Martial Soul tier is comparable to the Clear Sky Hammer, though it does not match that weapon’s specialized raw power 201 203.

Poison Mastery

Dugu Bo’s poison makes him especially dangerous to large groups and organizations. Even when considered the weakest Titled Douluo, he is feared for his ability to devastate a sect’s members if its strongest defenders fail to kill him 41 65.

  • Ninth Soul Skill — Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Poison: Releases highly corrosive poison capable of killing an ordinary person in less than a second 136.
  • Battlefield contamination: Tang Hao shatters the Ninth Soul Skill, but the resulting poison cloud remains dangerous and accidentally poisons Yu Xiaogang 137.
  • Post-evolution safety: His Martial Soul’s poison no longer harms his own body after its defect is repaired 32.
  • Prepared toxins: Uses poison to control the Destruction Golden Dragon after medicinal pills push it into the Hundred-Thousand-Year realm 187.

Eighth Soul Skill — Time Solidification

Time Solidification freezes time around a target or within the surrounding area, creating an opening for follow-up attacks 114 136 204.

  • Soul Beast capture: Immobilizes a fleeing Void Beast after Taichu swaps its position with Amenotejikara 114.
  • Combination attacks: Freezes Tang Hao before using Martial Soul Avatar and Medusa’s Gaze 136.
  • Soul Power cost: Immobilizing Tang Hao consumes one-fifth of Dugu Bo’s total Soul Power almost immediately 136.
  • Resistance: Cannot completely freeze Level 96 Super Douluo Tang Xiao; his movements are slowed instead 204.
  • Maintenance limit: Tang Xiao escapes when Dugu Bo’s simultaneous use of his Ninth Soul Skill disrupts his control 204.

Soul Bone Skill — Medusa’s Gaze

Medusa’s Gaze projects a beam that petrifies its target 143.

  • Direct application: Strikes Tang Hao and causes his body to begin turning to stone 143.
  • Control sequence: Used after Time Solidification and Martial Soul Avatar during the coordinated ambush 136.

Medicinal Expertise and Cultivation Guidance

Dugu Bo works with Yang Wudi on medicinal preparations and evaluates suitable Soul Ring limits for younger Soul Masters 35 36 187.

  • Soul Ring assessment: Determines that Taichu’s physique can withstand a ring just over ten thousand years old and calculates that Dugu Yan can absorb an 8,500-year ring after strengthening her body 35 36.
  • Live capture: Captures a forty-thousand-year Spirit-Eating Taotie alive for Taichu’s fourth Soul Ring 107.
  • Artificial advancement: Helps prepare two pills that restore the Destruction Golden Dragon’s injuries and force its cultivation to reach one hundred thousand years 186 187.
  • Protection during absorption: Guards Taichu and Yang Wudi while they absorb the dragon’s Soul Bone and Soul Ring 189.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well medicine garden — His private medicinal resource site. Taichu identifies seventeen Immortal Herbs there; the environment accelerates rare plant growth tenfold 28 29.
  • Immortal Herb Illustrated Guide — Supplied by Taichu. Allows Dugu Bo to recognize valuable plants already growing in his garden and understand their consumption methods 28 30.
  • Earth Dragon Golden Melon — Consumed to evolve his Martial Soul and permanently resolve his hereditary poison 30 32.
  • Ten Thousand Year Void Right Leg Bone — Gifted by Taichu and successfully absorbed. Dugu Bo values its space-attribute origin as a potential additional means of self-preservation 44 46.
  • Clear Sky Sect inheritance Soul Bone — Admits to absorbing one, intensifying the sect’s hostility toward him 202.
  • Two Ten Thousand Year Soul Bones — Their absorption raises him to Level 96 Super Douluo 224.
  • Fifty-Thousand-Year Death Bone Right Arm Bone — Gives it to Dugu Yan because his own poison is too deeply rooted for him to transfer into a bone 29.
  • Thunder Dragon Ginseng — Receives it from Yu Luomian as part of settling the dispute over Liu Erlong 178.

Relationships

  • Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and only surviving relative. He prioritizes her survival and cultivation, and celebrates her eventual Hundred-Thousand-Year sixth Soul Ring 19 21 30 349.
  • Taichu — Grandson-in-law, beneficiary, and trusted ally. Their relationship begins with interrogation and threats, then becomes one of reciprocal support: Taichu cures his Martial Soul defect, while Dugu Bo protects him and invests in his growth. Other characters initially mistake Taichu for his disciple 26 32 41 189 282.
  • His son — Dies in his thirties from the family’s hereditary poison; that loss drives Dugu Bo’s fear for Dugu Yan 21.
  • Yang Wudi — Close ally and frequent hunting and combat partner. They cooperate on medicinal pills, Soul Ring acquisition, and Taichu’s protection 187 189 200.
  • Prince Xue Xing — Saves his life, creating the debt behind his ties to the Heaven Dou Imperial Family 42 55.
  • Emperor Xue Ye — Political contact. Dugu Bo secures academy approval and resources through him, later obtaining a Soul Bone for Yang Wudi at the cost of owing the emperor a favor 57 183.
  • Yue Guan and Gui Mei — Longstanding enemies who repeatedly hunt him after he refuses Spirit Hall’s recruitment. He later confronts both over their attempt to assassinate Taichu 230 414.
  • Tang Hao — Enemy targeted in a coordinated ambush. Dugu Bo, Yang Wudi, and Taichu jointly cause him to lose an arm, although public accounts credit Dugu Bo alone 136 202.
  • Tang Xiao — Opponent whose hostility centers on Tang Hao’s injuries and the loss of a Clear Sky Sect inheritance Soul Bone 202 203.
  • Qian Daoliu — A source of pressure over Taichu. Dugu Bo resents his interference but cannot safely confront him; this also complicates his handling of Qian Renxue’s visits 404 409 415.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Meeting Taichu and Curing the Dugu Family Defect

Dugu Yan brings home Taichu’s method of storing hereditary poison inside a Soul Bone. Dugu Bo initially considers silencing the outsider, but his granddaughter intervenes. He verifies the method and gives her a Fifty-Thousand-Year right arm bone, although his own deeply embedded poison makes the method unsuitable for him 21 29.

When Taichu visits Dugu Manor, Dugu Bo interrogates him under escalating Soul Power pressure. Taichu’s knowledge of the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and his Immortal Herb Illustrated Guide turn the encounter into a negotiation. Dugu Bo grants access to the garden, gives Dugu Yan the Nine-Colored Snake God Flower, and consumes the Earth Dragon Golden Melon himself 26 28 29 30.

The resulting evolution cures his poison, raises him to Level 93, and changes his attitude toward Taichu. He begins addressing the boy as his grandson and supports both young Soul Masters’ subsequent ring hunts 32 33 35.

Establishing Samsara Academy

Dugu Bo agrees to obtain grounds and certification for Taichu’s advanced Soul Master academy. His personal intervention secures Emperor Xue Ye’s immediate approval, a land grant, and financial sponsorship. He also rejects the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s demand that he surrender Taichu over Yu Tianheng’s beating 38 57.

He later helps recruit Ye Lingling by promising an Immortal Herb at Dugu Yan’s request. As Samsara Academy’s guest elder, he remains an important protector and eventually represents it at the inter-faction conference in Martial Soul City 74 137 374.

Conflict with Tang Hao and the Clear Sky Sect

Dugu Bo deliberately draws Tang Hao out in Nuoding City and releases his full Soul Power as a signal for Taichu’s separate operation. The confrontation ends without a fight, and Dugu Bo visits Su Yuntao afterward 49 50.

He later joins Yang Wudi and Elder Luo in an ambush on Tang Hao, using temporal control, petrification, and poison. The wider operation involving Taichu costs Tang Hao an arm and substantially improves Dugu Bo’s public reputation 136 143 202.

Conflict extends to Tang Xiao and the Clear Sky Sect’s elders. Dugu Bo takes the stronger opponent to reduce the risk to Taichu and uses Time Solidification followed by his Ninth Soul Skill against Tang Xiao 200 203 204.

Protecting Taichu from Spirit Hall

After Spirit Hall attempts to assassinate Taichu during Dugu Bo’s absence, he seeks justice from Emperor Xue Ye and demands political pressure on the organization. The emperor agrees to apply pressure but will not take direct military action 87.

Following his Level 96 breakthrough, Dugu Bo returns to Heaven Dou City with Taichu and Yang Wudi. He refuses Spirit Hall’s renewed recruitment attempt and battles Yue Guan and Gui Mei while his allies engage the other attackers 230 231 232 238.

He and Taichu subsequently force Guan Chen to retreat, giving Dugu Bo a sense of vindication against someone who had previously hunted him 242.

Later Family and Political Tensions

Dugu Bo welcomes Dugu Yan and Taichu back from the sixth Soul Ring expedition, placing their safe return above their delay and reacting with pride to her Hundred-Thousand-Year ring 348 349.

Later, Qian Daoliu’s pressure over Taichu and Qian Renxue’s interest in him create a difficult family dispute. At Samsara Academy, Dugu Bo and Yang Wudi hesitate to either admit or drive away Qian Renxue: welcoming her conflicts with their loyalty to Dugu Yan, while rejecting her risks Qian Daoliu’s anger 404 409 415.
