Background / History

The Heavenly Dao governs the birth and destruction of all things, while the Earth Dao bears the proliferation of beings and the Human Dao sustains living beings’ will. Although the Three Daos were meant to be balanced, the Heavenly Dao suppressed the Earth Dao and Human Dao from the beginning of the Great Wilderness 316.

It manipulates predetermined fate to preserve its order. Xuandu deduces that it forcibly made the Chaos Bell Eastern Emperor Taiyi’s companion treasure rather than allowing it to remain with the Three Pure Ones, enabling the Demon Race’s rise, the Witch-Demon Conflict, and the ensuing tribulation 244.

The Heavenly Dao is described as impartial in principle yet selfish in preserving the existing order. It grants Heavenly Dao Merit to Xuandu after he creates a cultivation method for the Human Race, but later turns against his Martial Dao because its formation threatens to alter the established laws and consolidate Human Race fortune outside existing sects 52 107.

Conflict with the Martial Dao

Primordial Heavenly Venerate invokes the Heavenly Dao’s attention toward Xuandu’s nascent Martial Dao Law. The Heavenly Dao Will descends as a colossal eye, deploying lightning and law chains to suppress and erase the incomplete law 107 109.

Xuandu directly challenges its interference, arguing that the Martial Dao gives the Human Race a path to strength and transcendence. When he deposes Laozi as Human Sect Master, the Human Race’s collective will stabilizes the Martial Dao Law prototype and causes the Heavenly Dao Eye to visibly fluctuate 109 112.

The Heavenly Dao continues suppressing the Human Dao’s revival until Houtu restrains it through the Earth Dao. This delay allows Xuandu, the Three Sovereigns, and the Three Human Ancestors to awaken the Human Dao and establish balance among the Three Daos 350 356.

When this fails to secure victory, he attempts to self-destruct the Heavenly Dao Eye and take Xuandu, Houtu, and the Great Wilderness with him 455 457.

The Heavenly Dao ultimately collapses, severing Hongjun’s foundation and leaving him to fade within the Chaos. However, its origin remains in Purple Heaven Palace, meaning that its revival remains possible. Xuandu states that the balanced Human Dao and Earth Dao will prevent any revived Heavenly Dao from returning to unquestioned supremacy 467.
