Background
Toru grew up under strict Uchiha expectations. His mother repeatedly reminded him that, as an Uchiha child, he had to be excellent, maintain the clan's reputation, keep his clothes clean, and avoid fighting. The pressure left him withdrawn and isolated from other children, who considered him overly clean and well-behaved. He preferred reading and collecting cards, but had no one at the Academy who shared those interests. 2
On his first day at the Ninja Academy, Shin Nohara noticed Toru sitting alone and directly offered friendship. Toru initially worried that Shin would also consider him strange, but accepted after Shin openly admitted that both of them were a little weird. The two soon bonded over bear cookies and chocolate sticks. 2
Appearance
Toru is introduced as a boy around Shin's age, with neat black hair, delicate features, and large round eyes. He initially wears a blue ninja uniform; later, he is seen in the Uchiha clan's dark, high-collared clothing. 2 56
- Neat black hair.
- Delicate facial features and large round eyes. 2
- Often maintains a composed, serious posture due to his upbringing. 2
- Wears the Uchiha clan's high-collared top during combat. 56
Personality
Toru is polite, disciplined, and highly conscious of responsibility. His clan upbringing makes him hesitant to act outside expectations, and he initially struggles to express his own ambitions; when asked about his dream, he can only say that Uchiha usually become ninjas who serve the village. 9
Despite his reserved nature, Toru is patient with Shin's eccentric behavior. He listens to Shin's elaborate anti-green-pepper arguments, shares chocolate sticks with him, and often provides practical advice without dismissing him outright. 4 10 41
He is also cautious to the point of tension. During an escort mission, he keeps a kunai in hand and continually watches for ambushes even when the road appears peaceful. His vigilance becomes a strength when others are in danger, though Yuhi Shinku notes that Toru can lack initiative and is easily led astray by Shin. 98 109
Abilities & Skills
Fire Release
Toru is an advanced Fire Style user for his age, capable of deploying multiple Uchiha techniques in combat.
- Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique — Produces a large fireball; he used it in his first duel with Shin and to force upperclassmen away from his classmates. 24 60
- Fire Style: Phoenix Sage Fire Technique — Fires multiple small flames over a wide area; he used it against several upperclassmen at once. 24 49
- By the genin evaluation period, he can launch six fireballs precisely at six separate targets. 98
- His early Great Fireball use consumes substantial Chakra, leaving him at a disadvantage against Kakashi after fighting Shin. 24 25
- The Third Hokage criticized his slow hand seals and unnecessary retreat before casting. 32
- If his hand seals are interrupted, he has difficulty responding effectively with other options. 90
Ninjutsu Fundamentals
Toru has a strong technical foundation beyond Fire Release.
- Uses the Substitution Technique during his duel with Shin, surprising the Academy spectators. 24
- Accurately throws shuriken and can explain grip, stance, breathing, and wrist movement to Shin. 41
- Masters the Three Basic Techniques during genin training and is evaluated as excellent across subjects. 98
- His observation, analysis, and tactical execution are described as outstanding and composed. 98
Combat Awareness
Toru is capable of reading danger and placing himself between threats and his companions.
- Attempts to protect Shin when Adai's identity and intentions appear suspicious. 56
- Steps forward to confront Yamashiro Taiga's group and offers to remain behind if the upperclassmen will leave his classmates alone. 60
- Tracks Shiro's abductor alone, waits before entering the hidden cave, and intervenes when Shiro is caught in a Reverse Summoning Technique. 113
- Maintains a protective position around Shin and Little Orange during the Dog Clan conflict. 114 116
Equipment
- Kunai — His regular close-combat weapon and a tool he keeps ready during missions. 24 109
- Shuriken — Used in training and as part of his Fire Style attacks. 24 41
- Konoha forehead protector — Received upon graduating as a genin. 101
- Ninja tools pouch — Prepares an extra pouch containing shuriken, kunai, steel wire, and bandages for Shin before an escort mission. 108
Relationships
- Shin Nohara — Toru's first and closest friend. Their relationship begins when Shin accepts Toru despite his unusual habits; they become friendly rivals, study partners, and frequent chocolate-stick companions. 2 10 15 Toru eventually accepts that Shin will try to save him in danger because friends help one another. 92 96
- Kakashi Hatake — Fellow Academy prodigy and later genin teammate. Kakashi defeats Toru in the Academy tournament after Toru's Chakra is depleted, and the two later cooperate to investigate Adai. 25 56
- Uchiha Great Elder — A senior clan figure who permits Toru to teach Shin Fire Style and personally instructs both children. He advises Toru to relax and stop overthinking his training. 34 35
- Toru's mother — A caring but demanding parent whose emphasis on Uchiha dignity and excellence contributes to Toru's difficulty fitting in. 2
- Maruboshi Kosuke — Mission leader who accompanies Toru, Shin, and Kakashi on their early genin assignments. 106 109
- Gray Ridge — Initially treated with suspicion during the Dog Clan conflict; Toru gradually works with him to rescue Shiro while remaining wary of his motives. 113 117
- Little Orange — Toru initially refuses to let the kitten join the dangerous journey, then takes a protective role after Little Orange accompanies the group. 116
Story Role / Major Arcs
Academy Years
Toru begins as a lonely child burdened by family expectations, but Shin's friendship gives him a place among his peers. He becomes Shin's study partner for the top-three examination, with the two making a chocolate-stick wager and agreeing to compete fairly as both rivals and friends. 2 15
In the Wooden Sword Tournament, Toru reaches the top four and faces Shin in their first duel. He demonstrates the Substitution Technique, Great Fireball Technique, and Phoenix Sage Fire Technique, but Shin's speed and counterattack ultimately leave him drained before his subsequent loss to Kakashi. He finishes second in the exam rankings. 24 25
Uchiha Training
Toru brings Shin to the Uchiha Clan Compound, where Shin's interest in Fire Style draws the Great Elder's attention. Although Shin learns rapidly, Toru receives guidance to be patient, relax, and stop overthinking his own progress. 34 35
After receiving only brief criticism from the Third Hokage, Toru privately worries that he is not liked or is failing to meet expectations. Shin reassures him by calling him his best friend. 32 33
Defending Class A
When upperclassmen insult the Uchiha clan and challenge him, Toru retaliates with Great Fireball and Phoenix Sage Fire, forcing several older students back. Adai later criticizes Toru's Fire Style control after preventing a flame from striking Yamashiro Taiga directly. 49
Toru again takes the lead when Yamashiro Taiga returns with a larger group to attack Class A. His Great Fireball creates the opening Kakashi needs to pull Might Guy and Obito out of the crowd, helping rally the class against the attackers. 60 61
Genin Missions and the Dog-Cat Conflict
Following early graduation, Toru joins Kakashi, Shin, and Maruboshi Kosuke on D-rank missions and an escort to the Land of Hot Water. He approaches the mission with constant vigilance, in sharp contrast to Shin's relaxed attitude. 101 107 109
When Shiro is abducted during the Dog-and-Cat conflict, Toru secretly follows the kidnapper, discovers the Dog Clan's cave, and rescues Shiro from a Reverse Summoning Technique. He nevertheless urges Shin to return to Kosuke and Kakashi rather than recklessly entering a clan conflict. 113
Toru ultimately agrees to accompany Shin in searching for Shiro, setting conditions that Shin must not run off and must hide behind him if danger arises. He continues acting as Shin's protector while navigating the Dog Clan's internal conflict and Black Fang's attempt to use Shiro as a false prince. 114 117 118
