Background / History

The Gu Clan was among the strongest Dou God Clans, with Gu Yuan—a Nine-Star Dou Sheng—as patriarch and more than five Seven-Star Dou Sheng-or-stronger experts. Its bloodline remained exceptionally potent, producing Grade Eight, Grade Nine, and God-Grade descendants such as Gu Xun'er. Its overall strength and bloodline concentration placed it at the top of the Douqi Continent's clan hierarchy. 9

Despite this strength, the clan's reputation among other Dou God Clans was poor. Ling Yuan openly accused it of failing the Xiao Tribe after supposedly taking responsibility for its protection, while secretly carving up the tribe's resources; this conduct was described as an open secret among the great clans. 9 Hun Tiandi later publicly provoked Gu Yuan over the Xiao Tribe's fall during Ling Yuan and Zi Yan's wedding, leaving Gu Yuan unable to dispel the resulting humiliation. 84

After Zhu Kun expressed interest in its Tou She Ancient God Jade, Gu Yuan personally assumed custody of the jade rather than leaving it with the Ancestral Hall's guards. 99 100 At the time, Elder Gu Yang, one of the Ancestral Hall's guards, was secretly a Soul Clan agent controlled by the Nihility Devouring Flame; Gu Yuan did not detect his abnormality. 100

Following the Soul Clan's attack on the Shi Clan, Gu Yuan attempted to bring the Shi survivors under Gu Clan protection. The survivors instead chose the Ling Clan, remembering the Gu Clan's treatment of the Xiao Tribe and trusting Ling Yuan and Zhu Kun, who had intervened during the massacre. 111

Ling Yuan later framed the Gu Clan for the destruction of Soul Hall branches by disguising himself as a Gu clansman and using the Gu Clan's Emperor Seal Technique. Believing the Soul Hall attacks had been attributed to them, Gu Clan elders organized a coalition operation to assassinate Hun Miesheng and eradicate Soul Hall branches across the Central Plains. 133 134 135

At its coming-of-age ceremony, the clan refused to return a Heavenly Tomb quota to the Xiao Tribe. After Gu Xun'er forced a compromise, the elders arranged for the nine-star Dou Zong Xiao Yan to challenge the one-star Dou Zun Gu Ming; Xiao Yan's defeat allowed the Gu Clan to retain the quota while publicly offering him resources as compensation. 196 197 The ceremony nevertheless affirmed Gu Xun'er's God-Grade Bloodline, which the clan regarded as the promise of another future Nine-Star Dou Sheng. 198

After Gu Xun'er's death, Gu Yuan faced division between elders seeking war against the Ling Clan and those prioritizing clan survival. The Yan and Lei Clans eventually joined the Gu Clan in defending the Ancient Realm against Ling Yuan, Zhu Kun, and the Soul Clan. 222 223 224

The Gu Clan summoned the Ancient Emperor's remnant soul and expended its Dou Di Bloodline to sustain it during the war. Ling Yuan exploited this dependency through repeated raids and withdrawals, forcing the Gu, Yan, and Lei Clans to drain their foundations while suffering heavy losses among their Dou Sheng elders. 226 227 228

Gu Yuan ultimately sought peace, offering to end the conflict after the clan lost more than a dozen Dou Sheng elders, but Ling Yuan refused reconciliation. The Gu, Yan, and Lei Clans then evacuated their younger generation and core members before committing their remaining forces to a final battle. 229 230 The Gu Clan was later counted among the ancient clans destroyed in the reshaped Douqi Continent, and Gu Yuan's death was confirmed by Ling Yuan. 239 250

After the clans' defeat, Gu Yuan clandestinely scattered surviving Gu, Yan, and Lei clansmen throughout the Douqi Continent in an effort to preserve their bloodlines and prepare for a future resurgence. 273 This effort ultimately failed: after Ling Yuan became a Dou Emperor, he created an artifact capable of detecting the three clans' Dou Di Bloodlines and dispatched the Ling Clan and Ancient Void Dragon Clan to eradicate their remnants and confiscate their resources. 325
