Background / History

Gu Yuan was a contemporary of Ling Mie and rose to become the Gu Clan's patriarch. By the time of Zhu Kun's visit to the Ancient Realm, he was a late-stage Nine-Star Dou Sheng and led a force including Gu Lie and the Three Immortals of the Gu Clan. 98

He had once been close to Xiao Xuan, who entrusted him with looking after the Xiao Tribe. After Xiao Xuan's fall, however, the Gu Clan seized the Xiao Tribe's resources; the tribe ultimately declined until its patriarch was only a Da Dou Shi. 9 202 Hun Tiandi later publicly used the Gu Clan's acquisition of those resources to shame Gu Yuan during Ling Yuan and Zi Yan's wedding. 84

Gu Yuan was the father of Gu Xun'er. He secretly assigned the intermediate Ban Sheng Gu Jiang to protect her while she lived with the Xiao Clan in Wutan City. 9 11 His expectations for Xun'er were high because of her exceptional bloodline and potential to advance to the God Grade, which could allow her to become a future Nine-Star Dou Sheng. 176

Personality

Gu Yuan is highly protective of the Gu Clan's interests and its inherited treasures. He personally took custody of the Gu Clan's Tou She Ancient God Jade after Zhu Kun's suspicious visit to the Ancient Realm, recognizing that the jade would be difficult to seize while it remained in the hands of a late-stage Nine-Star Dou Sheng. 100

As patriarch, he can be cautious and politically calculating, weighing the survival of the Gu Clan against personal motives. His inability to decisively commit to war against the Ling Clan after Gu Xun'er's death reflects the conflict between his role as a father and his responsibility as clan leader. 222

Gu Xun'er's death overwhelmed this restraint. Believing the Ling Clan responsible, he became consumed by grief and vengeance, ultimately pursuing Ling Yuan relentlessly despite the worsening condition of his body and soul. 220 231 245

Abilities & Skills

Late-Stage Nine-Star Dou Sheng Cultivation

Gu Yuan was one of the continent's peak cultivators, possessing late-stage Nine-Star Dou Sheng strength before his defeat.

  • Led the Gu Clan's strongest combat force alongside Gu Lie and the Three Immortals. 98
  • Was considered extraordinarily difficult to kill in an era without Dou Di experts. 100
  • Protected Lei Ying and Yan Jin from the fallout of Zhu Kun's attack, though doing so substantially disrupted his own Dou Qi. 173
  • Retained enough power to instantly destroy two Seven-Star Dou Sheng puppets during his pursuit of Ling Yuan. 241

Emperor Realm Soul

Gu Yuan possessed an Emperor Realm Soul, allowing him to perceive flaws in the Bodhi Ancient Tree's illusion and eventually escape it. 100 245

  • His soul was nevertheless affected by the Bodhi Ancient Tree's negative emotions after his prolonged illusion trial. 245
  • The corruption caused mental instability, physical pain, and a major reduction in his combat effectiveness. 245 247

Spatial Mobility and Combat Techniques

Gu Yuan could travel through the Void and employ high-level spatial movement in battle.

  • Rushed from the Ancient Realm to the site of Gu Xun'er's death by tearing through space. 220
  • Evaded Ling Yuan's Soul Spirit Beams while pursuing him near the Bodhi Ancient Tree. 241
  • Used a powerful palm strike that injured Ling Yuan even after the latter's layered defenses dissipated most of its force. 248

Gu Clan Ancestral Power

As patriarch, Gu Yuan could command the Gu Clan's collective bloodline power.

  • Ordered the Gu Clan to summon the Ancient Emperor remnant soul during the war against the Ling Clan, Soul Clan, and Ancient Void Dragon Clan. 226 227
  • Personally safeguarded the Gu Clan's Tou She Ancient God Jade after concerns that Zhu Kun sought it. 100

Puppet State

Following his death, Ling Yuan refined Gu Yuan's intact body into a high-level Dou Sheng puppet.

  • The puppet retained sufficient physical force to instantly destroy an Eight-Star Dou Sheng elder of the Soul Clan with a single punch. 251
  • Its appearance on the battlefield shattered the Soul Clan's morale and caused Hun Tiandi to lose his composure. 251

Equipment / Items

  • Tou She Ancient God Jade — The Gu Clan's ancient jade, personally kept by Gu Yuan after Zhu Kun's visit to the Ancient Realm. 100 Following Gu Yuan's death, Ling Yuan used the jade to help lure the Soul Clan into an ambush. 251
  • Yan Clan and Lei Clan Ancient Jades — Entrusted to Gu Yuan by Yan Jin and Lei Ying before their final confrontation, so he could conceal them and continue retaliating against their enemies. 231

Relationships

  • Gu Xun'er — Daughter. Gu Yuan valued her exceptional bloodline and potential, and reacted with uncontrollable grief and rage after learning of her death. 176 220
  • Ling Yuan — Primary enemy. Gu Yuan blamed him for Gu Xun'er's death, pursued him into the Bodhi Ancient Tree, and was eventually killed and made into Ling Yuan's puppet. 220 241 249 251
  • Zhu Kun — Rival Nine-Star Dou Sheng. Zhu Kun held the advantage in their direct physical clash, while Gu Yuan later fought him during the inter-clan war. 99 225
  • Hun Tiandi — Long-standing adversary and later a temporary, unspoken collaborator in attempting to kill Ling Yuan near the Bodhi Ancient Tree. 84 241
  • Xiao Xuan — Former friend who entrusted the Xiao Tribe to Gu Yuan's care. Xiao Xuan came to hate Gu Yuan after learning that the Xiao Tribe had fallen into ruin and lost its resources. 9 202
  • Ling Mie — Patriarch of the Ling Clan and political rival. Gu Yuan blamed him alongside the Ling Clan after Gu Xun'er's death. 221
  • Lei Ying and Yan Jin — Allied clan leaders who entrusted their ancient jades to Gu Yuan and asked him to continue retaliating after their expected deaths. 231

Story Role / Major Arcs

Zhu Kun's Visit to the Ancient Realm

Gu Yuan confronted Zhu Kun after the Dragon Emperor entered the Ancient Realm uninvited. Although he initially attempted to maintain diplomatic courtesy, Zhu Kun's superior physical defense forced Gu Yuan to concede the sparring match and placate him with four Ninth-Grade Treasure Pills. 98 99

Zhu Kun's apparent interest in the Ancient Realm led Gu Yuan and the elders to suspect that he coveted the Tou She Ancient God Jade. Gu Yuan subsequently removed the jade from the Ancestral Hall and kept it on his person. 99 100

Conflict over the Ninth-Grade Profound Pill

Gu Yuan became involved in the contest surrounding the Danta Ancestor and the Ninth-Grade Profound Pill. He intercepted Zhu Kun's attack, shielding Lei Ying and Yan Jin from the shockwave, but Zhu Kun's strength demonstrated the gap between a late-stage Nine-Star Dou Sheng and the two Eight-Star Dou Sheng clan leaders. 172 173

Gu Xun'er's Death and War with the Ling Clan

Hun Tiandi arranged Gu Xun'er's murder and framed the Ling Clan. Gu Yuan found the Golden Emperor Burning Heaven Flame at the scene near the Ling Realm and immediately concluded that the Ling Clan was responsible. 220 222

Overcome by grief, Gu Yuan attacked near Ling Clan territory and clashed with Zhu Kun. Although he wanted revenge, the Gu Clan's elders and its Yan and Lei Clan allies feared a direct war while the Soul Clan remained a threat. 220 222

During the ensuing war, Gu Yuan led the Gu, Yan, and Lei clans against the Ling Clan, Soul Clan, and Ancient Void Dragon Clan. His alliance suffered severe losses and internal discord, particularly after the failure to account for the Yan Clan's inability to summon the Flame Emperor. 225 226 227

Final Revenge and Death

After Yan Jin and Lei Ying entrusted their ancient jades to him, Gu Yuan vowed to continue endless retaliation against the Ling Clan, Soul Clan, and Ancient Void Dragon Clan. 231

He later pursued Ling Yuan to the Bodhi Ancient Tree. Hun Tiandi blocked Zhu Kun while Gu Yuan entered the tree's internal space with Ling Yuan, expecting to kill him without outside interference. 241

Inside, Gu Yuan was trapped in an intensified illusion and infected by the Bodhi Ancient Tree's negative emotions. Though he escaped the illusion, the corruption left him injured, unstable, and unable to display his former peak strength. 242 245 247

Ling Yuan attacked him with Nine Profound Golden Lightning, soul techniques, and seven high-level Dou Sheng puppets. After Gu Yuan realized that Gu Xun'er had been killed by Hun Tiandi rather than the Ling Clan, Ling Yuan killed him. 248 249

Ling Yuan later refined Gu Yuan's body into a puppet and deployed it against the Soul Clan, horrifying Hun Tiandi and the Soul Clan's elders. 251 The puppet immediately killed an Eight-Star Dou Sheng Soul Clan elder, helping Ling Yuan eliminate two of the Soul Clan's strongest elders during the ambush. 251
