| Status | Soul captured and converted into an Osiris gambling chip by D'Arby 1558 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 1440 (arrives at Jotaro's police station) 1440 |
Background / History
Dio Brando killed Joseph's father, George Joestar II, and took his body, prolonging the Joestar family's conflict with Dio. In the aftermath, Joseph and his allies investigated Dio's trail, encountered the Pillar Men, and defeated Kars through the Joestar family's combined efforts. Joseph's tactics helped separate and defeat Kars using the Sunstone's light and Ripple foam. 1439
Joseph awakened the Stand Purple Hermit in later years and traced the family's new supernatural crisis back to Dio. He learned that Dio's Stand awakening was affecting the Joestar bloodline, including Holy Kujo and Jotaro Kujo. 1439 1442
When Jotaro's Stand manifested in Japan, Joseph came to the police station to help him. He explained the family's history, showed Jotaro a psychometry photograph of Dio, and made clear that Dio's death was necessary to save Holy. 1441 1442 1443
Personality
Joseph is protective of his family and consistently prioritizes Holy and Jotaro's survival over his own. He worries about Jotaro's future, seeks confirmation that his grandson will live long enough to marry, and leads the effort to save Holy from her uncontrollable Stand. 1443 1470
He is an experienced improviser whose confidence can become recklessness. He uses suspicious details, misdirection, and environmental traps to fight Stand users, but also cheats in D'Arby's gamble and loses after conceding defeat internally. 1479 1532 1558
Despite his caution around Dio's agents, Joseph is prone to curiosity-driven mistakes, such as touching a mysterious electrical outlet in the wilderness and triggering Bastet's magnetism. 1545 1546
Abilities & Skills
Purple Hermit
Joseph's Stand manifests as pale-purple vines. It is primarily an intelligence-gathering and restraint Stand rather than a direct-combat power. 1442 1529
- Creates psychometry photographs of Dio by destroying high-end cameras. The images identify Dio but provide poor location detail. 1442 1443
- Binds enemies with its vines; Joseph used it to restrain Empress after it attached itself to him. 1479
- Can interface with electronic equipment. Joseph developed a method of rapidly switching television channels and assembling fragments of dialogue into intelligence. 1466
- Its surveillance value makes it a major threat to Dio, whose forces recognize that it can help the group locate him. 1529
Ripple
Joseph is a Ripple user and previously employed it during the Joestar family's battle against Kars. 1439
- He attempted to channel Ripple through a steel rod to destroy Empress. 1479
- Ripple was ineffective in that instance because Empress was attached to Joseph's own body. 1479
Tactical Improvisation
Joseph combines battlefield awareness with opportunistic use of the environment.
- He trapped Empress with Purple Hermit, coal tar, and a car after recognizing that direct Ripple attacks would endanger himself. 1479
- He uses precautions against poisoning, including ordering unopened, specifically identified bottles from a restaurant refrigerator. 1532
- He investigates crime scenes and identifies signs of struggle, blood, and suspicious activity when Polnareff and Hol Horse disappear. 1551
Vehicle Killer
Joseph repeatedly suffers or causes disastrous vehicle incidents, a trait the group calls Vehicle Killer.
- He identified multiple past air-travel disasters and admitted that accidents involving vehicles had happened to him repeatedly. 1448
- While trapped in a nightmare, he kicked an aircraft's controls and caused a crash. 1506
- Following the submarine disaster, he finally admitted that he possessed the “Vehicle Killer” ability. 1522
- His companions later forbid him from piloting their boat. 1522
Injuries and Recovery
- Fang Mo regrew Joseph's prosthetic hand shortly after meeting him in Japan. 1442
- High Priestess later severed one of Joseph's hands and pierced his chest during the submarine attack. 1517
- Fang Mo had Yellow Temperance imitate the missing hand temporarily. 1556
- When Sethan made Joseph younger, his body reverted to a time before the hand was lost, restoring the original hand and forcing out Yellow Temperance's imitation. 1556
Relationships
- Jotaro Kujo — Grandson. Joseph recruits Jotaro for the mission against Dio and remains deeply concerned for his safety and future. 1442 1470
- Holy Kujo — Daughter. Her Stand-induced collapse is the central reason Joseph commits to the journey to Egypt. 1439 1443
- George Joestar II — Father. Dio murdered George and possessed his body, making Joseph's conflict with Dio personal. 1439 1442
- Dio Brando — Family enemy and his father's killer. Joseph considers Dio the source of the Joestar bloodline's current Stand crisis. 1442 1443
- Fang Mo — Unpredictable ally with a claimed connection to Joseph's ancestors. Joseph distrusts many of Fang Mo's methods but repeatedly chooses to give him the benefit of the doubt. 1442 1507
- Muhammad Avdol — Trusted ally and adviser. Joseph coordinates with Avdol throughout the expedition and secretly visits Avdol's father after believing Avdol had died. 1443 1509
- Jean Pierre Polnareff — Fellow traveler. Joseph supports Polnareff during his vendetta against J. Geil and later investigates his disappearance. 1476 1551
- Iggy — SPW Foundation-provided Stand user recruited by Joseph as additional support against Dio's hidden preparations. 1522 1523
Story Role / Major Arcs
Japan and the Joestar revelation
Joseph arrives at Jotaro's police station after Jotaro awakens Star Platinum. He explains the Joestar family's history, demonstrates Purple Hermit, and confirms that Dio is active in Egypt. 1441 1442 1443
Journey to Egypt
Joseph helps choose the group's route after an aircraft incident, preferring sea travel to avoid further civilian casualties and the risks associated with his Vehicle Killer reputation. He also argues that avoiding Dio's Stand users entirely would be ideal before Fang Mo persuades the group that experience against them is necessary. 1450
Stand-user encounters
Joseph identifies potential infiltrators among the crew, defeats Empress through improvisation, and helps the group survive repeated enemy attacks across India and the desert. 1457 1479 1497
He also conceals the detour to Avdol's father's island, believing that revealing the connection could expose Avdol's family to Dio's retaliation. 1508 1509
Egypt
In Egypt, Joseph receives Iggy as reinforcements from the SPW Foundation, takes strict precautions against poisoning, and assists in investigations involving Bastet, Sethan, and other Stand users. 1523 1532 1546 1551
Sethan temporarily restores Joseph's younger body and original hand, but the effect does not heal a newly inflicted wound. 1556
D'Arby's gamble
Joseph challenges D'Arby to a surface-tension coin game and stakes his life on winning. Though he attempts to cheat, D'Arby wins, and Osiris turns Joseph's soul into a gambling chip. 1558
Notable Quotes
“I'll stake the legendary life of Joseph Joestar on it!” 1558
“Fine, fine, fine. I admit I have the Vehicle Killer ability, okay?” 1522
