Background / History

Mu Li was the young leader and sole heir of the Wolf Head Mercenary Group, one of Qingshan Town's three major mercenary groups. His status discouraged other mercenaries from openly pursuing Xiao Yi Xian, whom he courted while his group served as Wanyao Pavilion's hired protection detail for herb-gathering expeditions 60 61.

During an expedition into the Magical Beast Mountain Range, Mu Li encountered Xiao Tian and attempted to recruit him into the Wolf Head Mercenary Group. Xiao Tian refused, recognizing the offer as both recruitment and a warning to stay away from Xiao Yi Xian 84.

Mu Li later tracked Xiao Tian and Xiao Yi Xian to a hidden cave. After discovering its gold, jewels, and sealed stone boxes, he abandoned his courtship pretense and tried to seize the entire haul for the mercenary group. He ordered the cave sealed, demanded the pair's treasures, and intended to capture Xiao Yi Xian while killing Xiao Tian 96.

Xiao Tian, then a four-star Dou Practitioner, fought Mu Li—who was two stars higher—to a draw and escaped the cave amid the confusion caused by the mercenaries' failed pursuit 98 99. Fearing Xiao Tian's future growth, Mu Li ordered an all-out search and later worked with his father, Mu She, to expand the bounty and search parties 106 114.

After recovering the high Xuan-tier technique Roar of the Mad Lion from the cave's third stone box, Mu Li devoted himself to cultivation and combat training. His progress was driven by resentment over his earlier humiliation and by the threat Xiao Tian posed to the group 108 179.

Following the deaths of Mu She, Gan Mu, and He Meng, Mu Li remained at the Wolf Head Mercenary Group headquarters and ordered its members to hunt Xiao Tian. When Xiao Tian attacked the headquarters alone, Mu Li led the defense and confronted him personally 175 176.

Personality

Mu Li was ambitious, possessive, and status-conscious. He initially treated Xiao Yi Xian as a prospective partner, but when the cave treasure became available, he considered her less valuable than the wealth and power it could bring him 96 99.

He could maintain a courteous, composed facade when it served his interests, as shown by his recruitment attempt toward Xiao Tian and his public conduct around Xiao Yi Xian. Beneath that exterior, he was ruthless: he ordered Xiao Tian killed, intended to take Xiao Yi Xian by force, and was willing to offer her to subordinates as a reward for capturing his enemy 84 96 99.

His first failure against Xiao Tian left him fearful as well as furious. Rather than remain idle, he increased the group’s search efforts and trained diligently, becoming more cautious and capable during their final duel 106 114 179.

Hidden Cave Conflict

After entering the hidden cave with his men, Mu Li tried to confiscate its wealth and the treasures claimed by Xiao Tian and Xiao Yi Xian. His attempt to kill Xiao Tian and capture Xiao Yi Xian resulted in Xiao Tian escaping and the two becoming irreconcilable enemies 96 97 99.

Hunt for Xiao Tian

Mu Li treated Xiao Tian's escape and rapid progress as an existential threat to the Wolf Head Mercenary Group. He ordered increasingly large search operations and doubled the bounty offered for Xiao Tian's capture 106 114.

Fall of the Wolf Head Mercenary Group

After Xiao Tian killed the group's commanders, Mu Li attempted to defend the headquarters. He incapacitated no one before Xiao Tian's poison disabled most of the available mercenaries, then challenged Xiao Tian directly with his spear and Roar of the Mad Lion 175 177 181.

Mu Li survived the destruction caused by Ice Sealing Heaven and Earth but was left with shattered legs and fatal injuries. He attempted to bargain by offering the location of the Xuan-tier technique, but Xiao Tian killed him after revealing that Mu She was already dead 182 183.
