Background / History
Ryo grew up under severe financial pressure while caring for his younger sister, Hotaru. Their home was cold and nearly empty, and he took part-time work to support them; his early pursuit of acting was driven largely by the need to fund Hotaru’s medical treatment. 153 154 337
He was also subjected to school bullying. Ryo later downplayed incidents such as being splashed with water, struck by balls, finding a dead rat in his desk, and being attacked in the bathroom, but admitted that he regretted being unable to protect other victims at the time. 224
Ryo was a Fourth Generation White Room student. The institution forcibly injected him with addictive drugs, exploited the attachment other students developed toward him, and treated him as an experimental subject. 249 260 The Sakayanagis were involved in his removal from the White Room, and Ryo was later revealed to have written the treatment plan that saved Sakayanagi Arisu’s life. 260 284
At age eleven, Ryo performed in Hamlet as a child actor. With the Thespian talent, a performance that had once ended in humiliation instead earned him bouquets and acclaim; Shiina Hiyori and Karuizawa Kei both met him after the show. 158 His later performances in roles such as Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear made him a major theatrical figure, though his popularity also exposed Karuizawa Kei to sustained harassment from toxic fans. 173 322 337
Ryo’s life is shaped by repeated simulations and past-life memories. He uses accumulated knowledge from alternate scenarios to anticipate people, competitions, and conflicts; in one combat sequence, he retained the experience of roughly one hundred previous matches against Ayanokoji Kiyotaka. 359
Appearance
Ryo is described as tall and slender in his teenage years, with a composed presence that others find reassuring. His eyes are notably pitch-black. 41 224
- Eyes: Pitch-black pupils/eyes. 41 194
- Build: Tall and slender, though physically far stronger than his appearance suggests. 224 430
- Stage image: His smile and appearance were considered unusually striking from his childhood acting career onward. 159 337
Personality
Ryo is calculating, observant, and highly adaptable. He routinely studies the hidden incentives behind school rules, social conflicts, and other people’s behavior rather than accepting events at face value. His plans can be manipulative—such as using information gaps, betting pools, or public opinion to pressure opponents—but he generally treats strategy as a means of protecting people or securing an objective. 262 405 468
Despite his detached and occasionally smug manner, Ryo is deeply protective. He repeatedly intervenes for Karuizawa Kei, supports Hotaru through illness and poverty, helps Sakura Airi find a path in entertainment, and protects classmates during dangerous special exams. 14 153 170 489
He remains cautious around political figures and institutions because of his White Room experiences. Tsukishiro’s polite demeanor does not disarm him, and he is unwilling to trust powerful people merely because they appear friendly. 420
