Background / History

Cthulhu first appeared among Kang Qiao's giant beasts in a trilobite-like form. Though physically immense and heavily armored, he envied gods capable of changing their size and spoke with a blunt fixation on eating opponents 95 136.

During the conflict with the Olympian Gods, Cthulhu drew in the sea and became a water giant. He suppressed Poseidon's control over the surrounding waters, attacked the Olympians with water tentacles and ice spikes, and swallowed Ares after Ares's spear failed to harm him 137.

After a lengthy period on Planet Soth, Cthulhu became the Great Old God worshipped by the Frog-Fish People and Star Kin. He forced his brother Hastur from the planet, ruled from the deep sea, and prepared his followers for a campaign to reclaim their former homeworld 211.

Cthulhu later expanded the Deep Space Star Sea Empire across more than thirty life-bearing star systems. He took Skotai, Kasogsa, and Khtagya as additional consorts, grew his pantheon through offspring, and relied increasingly on his connection to Ruksu, the Mother of the Old Ones 366.

The Elder Gods eventually identified Cthulhu as a suitable target for establishing their authority, citing his destructive activity, arrogance, and favor from the Mother of the Old Ones 364. During the war for Planet Soth, Nodens and Yad-Sadag cut him off from Ruksu and imprisoned him with the Old Seal 371.

Within the Prison of Gods, Cthulhu's Origin Mark slowly weakened the seal. His lineage overthrew the Elder Ones assigned to guard them, established control over Earth's deep sea, and built the divine city of R'lyeh around their sleeping forms 389.

Appearance

Cthulhu's body changes drastically between forms, but his most recognizable traits are his black-gold armored shell, massive flattened frame, and predatory eyes.

  • Trilobite form with sixteen pairs of legs beneath his abdomen 95.
  • Legs covered in dense black barbs and spikes, capable of crushing beings unable to withstand his weight 205.
  • Flattened body that has covered approximately 64 square kilometers at one recorded size 176.
  • Black-gold crustacean body with crimson energy beneath the shell and purple vortex-like eyes after sleeping in spatial currents 275.
  • Can assume giant octopus, octopus-headed humanoid, and water-elemental forms 219 369 392.
  • While partially sealed, appeared as a golden giant octopus wrapped in the glowing chains of the Old Seal 392.

Personality

Cthulhu is simple-minded, impulsive, and intensely food-motivated. He often judges unfamiliar beings by whether they are edible, becomes angry when called stupid, and can be lured from deep sleep with the promise of a feast 180 373.

Despite his destructive nature, Cthulhu protects subjects he regards as his own. He rescued two Shell People through a Divine Descent Ritual, allowed them onto his back for safety, and continued searching for other missing followers 175 176.

His pride is tied to strength, bloodline, and revenge. He considers agreements beneath him when dealing with perceived inferiors, resents Kang Qiao for past humiliation, and refuses to accept submission even after recognizing the scale of Kang Qiao's universe 219 396.

Cthulhu is unusually affectionate toward Kthila, his youngest daughter. He calls her his “precious jewel,” carries her on his shoulder, and shows a gentleness not displayed toward his other offspring 392.

Abilities & Skills

Hydrokinesis and Elementalization

Cthulhu can gather, freeze, shape, and regenerate vast quantities of water, turning himself into a sea giant or using seawater as weapons.

  • Drained coastal waters into a vortex and formed a 10,000-meter water giant 137.
  • Produced water tentacles, icy spikes, and explosive ice cones that froze targets below −200°C 137 178.
  • Regenerates damage to his water-elemental body by re-aggregating scattered seawater 178.
  • Created water appendages in space to pierce and destroy insectoid warships 182.
  • Can suppress competing sea authority within waters under his control, overwhelming Poseidon 137.
  • His water form is limited by available mass, planetary gravity, exhaustion, and a combat range of roughly 100,000 meters against high-altitude targets 178 180.

Divine Kingdom Authority

Cthulhu bears the mark of the Divine Kingdom and can invoke its laws and Essence-based power.

  • Manifested a Divine Kingdom rune more than 150 kilometers across when the Dream Gods tried to draw him into their realm 180.
  • The mark produced six illusory suns that illuminated and shattered the invading Dream Realm 180.
  • Can open his Divine Kingdom alongside Itakua and Kizguz, manifesting an Essence sun within it 282.
  • Borrowed Kang Qiao's power through the connection between their Essences 282.
  • Used Lava-derived flames to counter Afuom Zha's death-and-decay soul attack 310.

Origin Connection

Cthulhu is strongly favored by Ruksu, the Mother of the Old Ones, whose power supports his growth and revival.

  • His essence can revive without damage after death through the Mother of the Old Ones 211.
  • He can sense Ruksu within dimensional cracks and seek power through spiritual contact during slumber 211 366.
  • Ruksu's projected power enabled his immense elementalization against Nodens 369.
  • Severing this connection leaves him vulnerable to sealing and severely limits his power 371 396.

Physical Power and Defense

Cthulhu's natural body is built for close combat and destruction.

  • His shell is described as unimaginably sturdy, with only Kang Qiao surpassing him in sheer weight among the giant beasts 95.
  • His barbed legs resemble cloud-piercing blades and make him dangerous even while simply moving or playing 205.
  • He destroyed an underwater city simply by generating a vast vortex around his humanoid form 219.
  • He can fight physically while elementalized, creating footholds in space through jets of water 182.

Consumption

Cthulhu frequently consumes defeated enemies and treats powerful beings as potential food.

  • Swallowed Ares after Ares's spear broke against him 137.
  • Fed on Hypnos's remnants after Kang Qiao defeated the Elder God 140.
  • Devoured the inhabitants of a Crab People city after answering the Shell People's summons 175 176.
  • Was awakened from slumber by Dagon's promise of a “fragrant feast of Elder Gods” 373.

Relationships

  • Kang Qiao — Ancient rival and the focus of Cthulhu's deepest resentment; their relationship also retains an unusually familiar, indulgent dynamic within the Order Pantheon 219 308 378 396.
  • Itakua — Close battle companion who transports Cthulhu, fights beside him, and treats him with sisterly concern when he exhausts himself 164 182.
  • Hydra — Ally in the Chaga Insectoid war; Hydra warned Cthulhu during combat and helped him destroy the insectoid fleet 182.
  • Dagon — Fellow Order deity and occasional battlefield ally; Dagon later confronted and subdued Cthulhu's renewed arrogance within Kang Qiao's universe 136 396.
  • Idhrah — Consort and mother of several of his children. She feared his warmaking and was later imprisoned and neglected by him 211 366.
  • Kthila — Youngest daughter and Cthulhu's favored child; he is openly affectionate and protective toward her 211 392.
  • Hastur — Brother, known as the King in Yellow. Cthulhu forced him away from Planet Soth before later conflicts brought their factions into contact again 211 372.
  • Ruksu / Mother of the Old Ones — Cthulhu's primordial source and benefactor; her favor grants him revival, growth, and power 211 366.
  • Frog-Fish People and Star Kin — His primary worshippers and subjects on Planet Soth; they built his empire and followed his conquest order 211.
  • Nodens and Yad-Sadag — Elder God enemies who jointly cut off his Origin connection and sealed him in the Prison of Gods 371.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Olympian Conflict

Cthulhu joined Itakua and the Angels against the Olympian Gods. His sea authority forced Poseidon to flee, while his attacks helped rout Zeus and the other Olympians 137.

Shell People Rescue and Chaga Invasion

When two captured Shell People performed a Divine Descent Ritual, Cthulhu answered their call, destroyed a Crab People city, and took them under his protection 175 176. Soon afterward, he became a major defender against the Chaga Insectoid invasion, destroying thousands of warships despite being worn down by their numbers 178 180 182.

Revenge for the Homeworld

After establishing himself on Planet Soth, Cthulhu allied with Nasi to pursue the reclamation of his former homeworld. He violated the Elder Gods' contract, destroyed an unknown underwater city, and launched an ambush against Yahweh out of revenge 211 219 220.

Deep Space Star Sea Empire

Over tens of thousands of years, Cthulhu expanded his dominion through conquest, gathered Old Gods into his pantheon, and developed the Frog-Fish People's civilization and the Star Kin into the foundation of a star-spanning empire 366.

God War and Sealing

The Elder Gods attacked Planet Soth, defeated much of Cthulhu's lineage, and fought him directly through Nodens. Although Cthulhu drew on the Mother of the Old Ones to become an 18-million-meter water giant, Nodens and Yad-Sadag ultimately sealed him 368 369 371.

Prison of Gods Awakening

Cthulhu's sealed lineage survived beneath Earth's oceans and eventually occupied the deep sea after the downfall of the Elder Ones 389. Upon sensing Kang Qiao's presence, Cthulhu partially broke free, raised catastrophic waves, and attempted to resume their ancient conflict 392 394.

Transfer to Kang Qiao's Universe

Kang Qiao's actions weakened the Old Seal and briefly allowed Cthulhu to regain enormous power. Before he could fully exploit his renewed connection to Ruksu, Earth and Cthulhu's lineage were transferred into Kang Qiao's universe, cutting him off from the Mother of the Old Ones once more 396.

Trivia

  • Cthulhu can process mortal-world documents, but still prefers sleeping, playing, and avoiding work whenever possible 233.
  • His reputation as a source of ancient history is unreliable: subordinate gods note that his explanations usually return to eating and playing rather than objective detail 307.
  • Dagon can reliably awaken Cthulhu from deep sleep by tempting him with food 373.
