The Disciplinary Officer
Jack's gun suddenly veered and pointed at Hope.
In a moment of panic Hope instinctively tried to dodge, only to realize that the gun had actually bypassed his shoulder.
He looked back and realized that there seemed to be a person standing a dozen meters away from the car.
The person had two cockroach-like antennae next to their head.
A few seconds later, Hope realized that the tentacles were actually the other person's raised hands.
Jack gripped the gun in one hand and waved to the other man.
The man walked over slowly.
He first looked at Hope, paying close attention to Hope white hair and pink eyes, then looked at Jack, his gaze lingering on the scar on Jack's cheek.
Meanwhile, Hope was also watching him.
He appears to be a bit taller Hope, and is probably between middle and old age, with almost the same amount of black and white hair.
A black formal suit with gold thread embroidery on the collar, but Hope couldn't make out what the pattern was.
His attributes came to Hope's mind:
Self-Being: 1.01, Spirit Body: 1.59, Self-Sense: 1.03, Inspiration: 0
That's normal.
The exchange did not detect the presence of magic.
"Are you Mr. Love and Mr. Jack Cobert?" he asked.
Hope nodded, but Jack didn't respond, the pistol still pointed at the other man's head.
The man with gold thread embroidered on his collar slowly lowered one hand, and after obtaining Jack's permission, he took out a piece of metal from his pocket.
Hope took it, but he couldn't understand it. He only thought the patterns on it were complicated, so he handed it to Jack.
"Welcome, Mr. Disciplinary Committee Member," Jack said, lowering his gun at the same time.
The disciplinary committee member nodded and said, "We were lucky; there was almost no one in that building."
"Almost?" Hope asked.
"There are a few," the disciplinary committee member replied, "But it's not a big problem; they're not on the first floor."
"That's certainly good news," Jack said. "Are you all ready?"
"Ready."
As the disciplinary committee member spoke, he suddenly lifted his suit jacket, revealing a revolver hanging on each side of his waist.
"This thing is much more stable than an automatic pistol," the disciplinary committee member said. "It will never jam."
Jack fiddled with his automatic pistol, without denying it.
"Are you two together?" the disciplinary committee member asked again.
Before Hope could answer, Jack slapped him aside. "It's just me. He's just keeping me company."
"But—" Hope was about to argue.
Jack suddenly opened the car door. "Get out."
Hope and Jack got out of the car together.
He had just stood on the lawn when suddenly one of his legs gave way and bent over.
Hope lost her balance and almost fell to the ground.
The disciplinary committee member promptly reached out and helped him up.
"Thank you," Hope said.
The disciplinary committee member nodded. "Your health is too poor."
"Most likely—only the first-tier Spirit Body remains," Jack said. "Far below normal, but thankfully, the Spirit Body hasn't completely fallen below the first tier, otherwise you'd be lying in bed waiting for news."
"That doesn't sound very good," Hope replied.
He tried to stand up straight on his own. The disciplinary committee member noticed his intention and cooperated by slowly releasing her hand that was supporting him.
A few seconds later, Hope managed to stand on the lawn using her own strength.
"How are you feeling?" Jack asked.
"I'm so tired. Just standing is exhausting—I feel like a seventy or eighty-year-old."
"Actually," the disciplinary committee member said, stroking his graying hair, "Many elderly people are actually much stronger than you are now."
Hope grinned. "Thanks for the reminder."
"You're welcome."
"So, what should you do now?" Jack asked.
Hope shrugged and handed Jack dagger back to Jack: "I'm going back to the library to chat with Professor Rice and the others. I'll wait for your good news."
He returned to the car and sat down to rest for a while.
Jack pulled the disciplinary committee member around, Hope closed her eyes.
"Where did he go?" the disciplinary committee member asked Jack, looking at the empty car.
"Never mind that," Jack replied.
Jack looked around. "Where are your men?"
"Three have already gone in and should be on the second floor now. The others are nearby."
The disciplinary committee member waved, and a pedestrian in the distance waved back.
"You're already inside—aren't you afraid they'll suspect something?" Jack asked.
The disciplinary committee member shook his head. "We went to the Campus Maintenance Department first and borrowed their clothes, tools, and ladder. Those three people carried the ladder in; their tool bags were rattling loudly."
What needs fixing?
"Who cares?" The disciplinary committee member curled his lip. "They'll be responsible for evacuating and protecting the people upstairs, taking them from the second floor to the top floor. Only that Monster will be left downstairs."
"Well done," Jack said. "So what do I need to do?"
For now—just wait here.
The disciplinary committee member looked back and said, "Let's wait for the sniper's good news. Maybe he can take care of them and give us all a day off—it should be about time."
The person who had just waved to the disciplinary committee member suddenly jogged a few steps in this direction, his hand gestures changing.
Jack squinted. "Is he... sending some kind of signal?"
The disciplinary committee member scratched his head. "The sniper's message has arrived—basically, he said the sniper couldn't find anyone."
1
"Didn't find it?"
The disciplinary committee member and Jack gripped their pistols tightly and slowly advanced towards the edge of the history department building.
They paused at the corner, then moved close to the wall.
Midway through, two people joined them. They nodded to the disciplinary committee member without saying a word. The disciplinary committee member raised his hand, and everyone stopped by a window.
At the same time, Jack heard footsteps on the other side of the teaching building, almost undisguised.
Jack reached out and touched the window; it wasn't locked.
He waved for the other three to step back.
After silently counting to three, Jack suddenly opened the window, placed his hand on the windowsill, and jumped inside.
The door to Professor Larry's office was flung open, and at the front stood fully armed security personnel carrying light machine guns.
They found only four people inside, and none of the Monster they had targeted.
"What's going on?" asked the security guard holding a machine gun.
The disciplinary committee member shrugged. "As you can see, there's no Monster here—that guy probably ran away."
Jack held a handkerchief in his hand, stained with blood that emitted a foul odor. "He must have been here, but he was too cautious. We're too late."
The security personnel were unsure what to do for a moment, so they stood beside them for a while.
Another person came into the small room.
Judging from their attire, they are the people the disciplinary committee member mentioned, the ones who went to evacuate people.
He looked at the people in the room, and everyone looked at him. "I asked the people upstairs, and they saw Professor Larry's car leave here fifteen minutes ago."
Fifteen minutes ago----
Jack silently did the math—if it was this time, Wilbur probably wasn't waiting for Professor Larry at all; he was just in the office looking for his car keys.
Where is Wilbur going?
Jack paused for a moment.
He suddenly realized that Professor Armitage might not be able to come down from the fifth floor for some time.
Now, guarding the Necronomicon are three people who don't even have weapons.
