The summit

Hope stumbled along behind Little Robert, who made no allowance whatsoever for his injured leg.

They had left the mountain trail entirely and were walking through the weeds. Hope could only guess that they were heading uphill.

He stared at Little Robert's back, his thoughts racing.

If this wasn't about a personal grudge-why did Little Robert Miller want to abduct me?

Miller-the man behind Robert Miller should be Karl Miller-which meant Karl Miller had some kind of partnership with the Whateley family-

Karl Miller certainly wouldn't fund Whateley House out of pure charity-he had to want something from the Whateley family-

But now both Old Whateley and Wilbur were dead-even Lavinia was-

Yet Karl Miller still hadn't given up-what he wanted was-

Hope looked toward the summit. He could make out nothing, but according to Little Robert, the monster was up there.

Whatever Karl Miller wanted probably had something to do with that monster, and with Hope himself.

"What exactly does Mr. Karl Miller want?" Hope asked, feigning sincerity. "Maybe we can talk. There's no need to resort to violence."

"Ha." Little Robert did not even turn around. "I don't know any Karl Miller."

His answer was absentminded.

Even though Hope was no expert at detecting lies, he could recognize the obvious falsehood in Little Robert's words.

Hope was almost certain Little Robert had a connection to Karl Miller, but Little Robert Miller refused to admit it.

Hope understood.

It was like taking a statement. No matter how clumsy the lie, no matter how certain you were, as long as the other person refused to admit anything, it could not be used as evidence against Karl Miller.

Even though there were no police officers here, only Hope, the victim, Little Robert still protected his master's reputation.

He was certainly loyal.
