Earth's Overlord
The Night Hawk outside followed Old Whateley's change and altered its tone.
Lavinia suddenly screamed along with the Night Hawk, causing Old Whateley to frown. Hope and Wilbur covered their ears, but no one stopped her.
They dragged it out for another hour, until Old Whateley finally let out his final, dying breath.
Then, the noisy bird calls gradually subsided.
Hope hesitated for a moment, then reached out and closed the dead man's wide-open, gray eyes.
Lavinia sobbed beside her.
But Wilbur chuckled softly.
He looked out the window at the flock of Night Hawk.
"They didn't catch him," he muttered in a deep, resonant voice.
The Night Hawk gradually flew away. The dark figure, which was probably Hope's great-uncle, also disappeared.
Wilbur took Hope back to the room.
He told Hope that the the Whateley family had no relatives, so there was no need to wait for guests; the funeral would be held the next day, and only he, Hope, and Lavinia would attend.
Hope was in her room recalling Old Whateley's last words.
That was clearly meant for Wilbur.
When that thing grows a bit bigger... that thing seems to refer to Transparent Monster.
The complete Necronomicon... Why specifically mention "complete version"... Wilbur had an incomplete version that day... But where was he going to get the complete version...?
The title alone suggests that this book is bound to be malicious towards ordinary humans, and judging from Old Whateley's description of its contents, it seems to contain hymns that can truly summon the King of King of Kings...
A powerful yet evil book... a book... a library...
library.
Ordinary libraries might not have such books, but the Phillips Library is different. Its curator is a powerful extraordinary being, and it even has a room called the "Cultist Skull Museum"...
Hope wrote the name "The Necronomicon" on his Memorandum; if he could still remember it after arriving at Miskatonic University, he could try to find clues about the book in the library...
And... "The Great Old Ones".
Hope silently recited the New Federation words that had come from Old Whateley's mouth.
The word also appeared in the hymn Wilbur read, "The Great Old Ones were, the Great Old Ones are, the Great Old Ones will always be... They reside beyond space."
The Old Ones, the Dominators
Former rulers
Former rulers of the world
Once, a certain species ruled the world.
Dinosaur
Hope joked to himself, knowing it couldn't be a dinosaur.
Old Whateley couldn't say what it was, whether it was the King of Kings or something else entirely.
But Hope remembered something Wilbur had once said, something Wilbur had said when the phantom of the King of Kings appeared:
"Our father, the Gatekeeper of another world."
The Gatekeeper of another world... and the hymns that say "they reside beyond space"...
Does this mean the King of Kings is the Gatekeeper of the "Great Old Ones"...?
Summoning the King of Kings will also bring back the "Great Old Ones" to this world.
This is definitely not a good thing.
June 15
Old Whateley's funeral was hastily arranged, but Wilbur had clearly been preparing for it long in advance, having already booked the coffin and burial plot.
He borrowed an oxcart to pull the coffin, and the oxcart looked familiar to Hope; it was Zachariah's.
"Zachariah had no descendants," Wilbur said. "His property, including this oxcart, was inherited by his nephew."
"But his nephew didn't care about his death," Hope said.
Wilbur nodded. "Not at all."
That was all the conversation they had.
Unlike the Corey ' funeral, there were no guests or government officials reading eulogies.
The gravedigger dug the tomb, for Wilbur must have paid extra. The gravedigger then helped them carry the coffin into the grave. Old Whateley's body was only placed in the coffin after the coffin was in place.
Wilbur and Hope filled the hole together.
When the soil was halfway filled in, Lavinia cried again.
Wilbur grunted in dissatisfaction and told Lavinia to be quiet.
Lavinia looked at him fearfully and stopped crying.
Everything was completed in the early morning, and the Whateley House did not delay their lunch.
Hope's activities didn't stop even with the funeral of Old Whateley; he still left the room after lunch and arrived at Miskatonic University.
The task objective of the Memorandum has been updated as follows:
1. Invite Dr. Morgan to Dunwich (the former home of Old Williams).
2. Consult Dr. Morgan about the Hexagram Herb with translation capabilities.
3. Find Elizabeth
4. Search for clues related to the Necronomicon.
5. There is no need to be afraid of Dr. Morgan and Professor Armitage.
Hope first took out the completed translation and stored it in the box that originally contained the raincoat.
This was something he and August had discussed; when August came again, he would search this place.
The first point of the Hope Memorandum failed.
The library Gatekeeper said that Dr. Morgan was not in the library at all.
"Do you know where he went?" Hope asked, unwilling to give up.
The Gatekeeper shook his head. "Perhaps Armitage knows."
Hope knew where Professor Armitage's office was; he had just been there yesterday.
But looking at the sign above his head that read "Director's Office," he instinctively felt some resistance.
Although there is no law or regulation that prohibits ordinary people from meeting with the library director.
but...
When Hope was a student, the place with the biggest sign he ever went to was the faculty office... As for the dean's office, vice dean's office, etc., he and his classmates would subconsciously lower their voices when passing by, let alone go inside.
Hope licked her lips, and finally knocked on the door.
"Please come in," the old man said gently, raising his head. "Oh, it's Love."
The professor seemed pleased; there was another person in the room, a blonde girl.
Hope felt that the girl was rude, staring at him without any attempt to hide her gaze, as if she were watching monkeys in a zoo.
The professor said, "This is Nancy; I was just talking to her about you."
Hope felt like he'd heard the name before; someone had mentioned it to him.
But this memory is somewhat hazy.
He quickly forgot about it and asked Professor Armitage if he knew where Dr. Morgan was.
Professor Armitage thought for a moment, "Did he promise you herbs yesterday?"
Hope nodded.
"He should have told you in advance. He's not here right now and won't be back for a while. You could have told me first, and I'll go get it for you."
"But... I don't know the name of that herb, I only know what it looks like and what its medicinal effects are."
Professor Armitage shook his head. "I don't know anything about herbalism... Perhaps you could ask Professor Rice; he's upstairs."
