Personality

Roger is loud, competitive, and thrill-seeking. He eagerly challenges formidable opponents, laughs during combat, and is frustrated rather than discouraged when Dimon proves difficult to defeat. 19 20

His affection for Shakky is extravagant and often impractical: he presents her with flowers, gives her Devil Fruits, repeatedly invites her onto his crew, and even offers her to Dimon while seeking help with the Poneglyphs. 17 55 56 58

Background / History

Meeting Dimon and the final-island pact

Roger arrives at Shakky’s bar with the Roger Pirates, offers Shakky a flower and a Devil Fruit, and reacts with hostility when she gives the fruit to Dimon instead. His jealousy leads to a battle with Dimon, in which Roger’s swordsmanship and Haki overwhelm Dimon’s human form, though Dimon’s regeneration and aerial mobility prevent a decisive result. 17 19 20

Afterward, the two discuss the true end of the Grand Line. Dimon explains that Mercury Island is not the final destination and that the Road Poneglyphs are necessary to reach the unknown island beyond it. Roger agrees to pursue the Poneglyphs and promises to take Dimon to the final island once the route is complete. 21

Wano and the voyage to Laugh Tale

Roger reunites with Dimon in Wano while searching for Poneglyph information. He persistently attempts to recruit Dimon, even offering Shakky as compensation, while Dimon ultimately provides materials for the Roger Pirates’ ship repairs. 55 56

The Roger Pirates remain in Wano for half a year, drinking with Dimon and repairing the Oro Jackson. Two years later, Roger returns with the rubbing of the fourth Road Poneglyph, enabling Dimon to join the crew in 1492. 59 60

The crew reaches the true final island more than a month later. Finding that they have arrived too early, Roger laughs at the revelation and names the island Laugh Tale. The crew leaves an Eternal Pose there for future visitors. 62

Pirate King and the Great Pirate Era

After the Grand Line conquest becomes public, Roger is crowned the Pirate King and receives a bounty of 5,564,800,000 Belly. The World Government subsequently orders that his name be rendered as “Gold Roger” to conceal the “D.” in Gol D. Roger. 63 67

The Marines lure the Roger Pirates to Enies Lobby with false news of Shakky’s arrest. Roger orders a retreat after the rescue fails, but he is eventually captured amid the battle and imprisoned in Impel Down. 70 79 80

At his Loguetown execution, Roger remains calm and publicly announces that his treasure has been left somewhere in the world. Dimon interrupts the execution, gives Roger the Elixir of Immortality, and helps him escape.
