Background / History
Garp served as a Marine Vice Admiral during the era of the Rocks Pirates. At Sabaody Archipelago, he accompanied two Celestial Dragons and prevented one from shooting Dimon, choosing to arrest him himself. When the Rocks Pirates descended and abducted the Celestial Dragons, Garp attempted to intervene before Rocks stopped him. 7
Following the God Valley incident, Garp confirmed to Marine Headquarters that former Rocks Pirates had become effectively unkillable through the Elixir of Immortality. Around this time, his son Monkey D. Dragon resigned from the Marines, telling Garp that he could not find justice within the organization. 36
Garp became one of Gol D. Roger’s most persistent pursuers, repeatedly attacking the Roger Pirates with Haki-infused cannonballs and personally challenging Roger in battle. Dimon later targeted Garp’s warship with summoned meteors; Garp destroyed the main meteor with a Conqueror’s Haki-covered punch and protected his ship from the resulting debris. 61 62
Unlike Sengoku and Zephyr, Garp initially refused the Elixir of Immortality. He reconsidered when Roger’s growing strength made clear that he could no longer defeat his rival, then traveled to Wano and exchanged a Devil Fruit for a serving of the Elixir. 77 137 138
During the World Conference incident, Dimon sent Garp, Sengoku, Zephyr, and Omar into the future. Garp later returned with the others after a year had passed. 222 248
At Reverse Mountain, Garp faced Dragon’s Revolutionary Army and tried to protect the Marine fleet despite Dragon being his son. He rescued Zephyr from a demonized Sea King, held back enemy attacks so the fleet could retreat, and awakened the Demon God Realm. He was ultimately overwhelmed by Dimon, Roger, Rocks, and Golden Lion, then captured. 253 259 260
After a prisoner exchange returned him to Marineford, Garp secretly worked with Dimon to bring Marine leadership under Revolutionary Army control. He lured Tsuru into a trap, assisted Aokiji’s betrayal during the Marine conference, and personally subdued Sengoku with Seastone cuffs. 264 265 266
Appearance
In his early appearance, Garp is a clean-shaven man with short jet-black hair. Though still under forty, he is described as being in his prime and full of energy. 7
- Broad, powerful build suited to hand-to-hand combat.
- Usually wears a Marine uniform while on duty.
- Often seen relaxing in a beach chair or eating senbei despite active operations. 125 252
- His Demon God Realm covers his body in Haki, leaving only his determined eyes visible. 259
Personality
Garp is loud, fearless, and habitually carefree in dangerous situations. He laughs during pursuits, ignores formalities, and frequently frustrates fellow officers such as Sengoku and Zephyr with his recklessness. 61 138 252
Beneath this behavior, Garp is deeply committed to his own concept of Marine justice. He risks himself to protect the fleet, rescues comrades in combat, and refuses to abandon others even when facing overwhelming enemies. 259
His loyalty is complicated by his family. Dragon’s departure from the Marines leaves him unable to fully reject his son’s beliefs, while learning of his grandson Luffy causes visible excitement. After Dimon forces him into the Revolutionary Army, Garp chooses to assist in part because he believes Dragon still acts according to justice. 36 262 264
Abilities & Skills
Haki Mastery
Garp is regarded as one of the Marines’ foremost Haki users, particularly in Armament Haki. Zephyr identifies him as likely the strongest active Armament Haki user on the seas. 90
- Uses Armament Haki to destroy Sea King heads with direct punches. 217
- Uses Observation Haki to detect Sea Kings and track Dragon through Elementalization. 217 253
- Coats cannonballs and punches in Conqueror’s Haki. 61 125
- Can release immense Haki force through his fists, producing attacks powerful enough to devastate large areas. 90 260
Demon God Realm
Garp’s Demon God Realm is a self-developed Haki technique fueled by conviction and life energy. His immortality allows him to sustain its otherwise extreme cost for a prolonged period. 259
- Massively increases his physical power and Haki output.
- Allows him to shatter Golden Lion’s mountain-cleaving sword strike with a punch. 259
- Was developed without Dimon’s Haki training system. 259
- Its power does not prevent Garp from being overwhelmed by several top-tier opponents attacking together. 260
Physical Combat
Garp fights primarily with bare-handed strikes, augmented by Haki and overwhelming physical force.
- Bone Fist Meteor — A descending Haki-infused punch described as capable of obliterating a city and melting ice across a vast area. 217 260
- Punch Impact — A long-range punch that collides with Roger’s sword energy and produces a massive sea crater. 62
- Can throw giant cannonballs hard enough to create colossal waves on impact. 61 125
- Uses air-stepping movement to pursue airborne opponents. 253
Immortality
After drinking the Elixir of Immortality, Garp ceases aging and gains enhanced recovery. 138
- Lets him sustain the life-force expenditure of the Demon God Realm far longer than a normal person could. 259
- Does not make him immune to defeat or capture. 260
Relationships
- Monkey D. Dragon — His son. Garp tried to keep Dragon in the Marines, later faced him during the Revolutionary Army’s stand at Reverse Mountain, and remained conflicted between duty and family. 36 252 253
