Background and History

Nalan Yanran came to the Xiao Clan with Elder Ge Ye to dissolve her engagement to Xiao Yan. As the Misty Cloud Sect's young sect mistress, she cited the sect rule barring her from becoming involved with a man. Before she could complete the annulment, Xiao Yan challenged her; her sword was broken, and she was defeated without being able to resist. Humiliated, she declared that she would return in three years to challenge him again. 2

The defeat became the driving force of her cultivation. She trained obsessively to surpass Xiao Yan, while Yun Yun sought Purple Spirit Crystals and medicinal pills to support her advancement. By the time she travelled with Elder Yun Jing to Black Rock City, she had reached the level of a high-level Dou Master and remained focused on winning the Three-Year Agreement. 11 27

In Black Rock City, Yanran encountered the masked Sixth-Rank Alchemist Yan Xiao. His voice reminded her of Xiao Yan, but his altered physique, maturity, and alchemy rank convinced her that they could not be the same person. Once Yan Xiao revealed his Heavenly Flame, she saw a chance to save her grandfather Nalan Jie from Brand Poison. 28 29

Desperate to secure treatment for Nalan Jie, Yanran offered to serve Yan Xiao as a maid for half a year in exchange for one opportunity to negotiate treatment if the poison erupted. She travelled with him for several days, but proved unskilled at the role and was dismissed after he agreed to treat her grandfather during the Alchemist Conference. 30 31

Yanran was later captured by the Snake-People Tribe. Yan Xiao secretly arranged for her release and instructed her not to reveal his identity or involvement, even to Yun Yun. She deduced that he had rescued her, resolved to repay him, and began developing feelings for him. 32 46

During their captivity, Yanran and Yun Yun were held in neighboring cells. Before discovering that her master was also imprisoned, Yanran had hoped Yun Yun would come to rescue her. 36 40

After their release, Yanran accompanied Yun Yun to Mo Cheng’s birthday banquet and on a search for special flames. Mo Cheng attempted to drug both women with an aphrodisiac, but Yun Yun exposed his scheme and killed him. Yanran had also feigned weakness during the confrontation. She took Yun Yun’s warning about Mo Cheng’s overconfidence seriously, promising to maintain a clear understanding of her own abilities. Their subsequent search for the Wind Fury Dragon Flame failed because Xiao Yan had already taken it. 57 58

When Yan Xiao arrived in the Imperial Capital, Yanran and the Nalan Clan entrusted Nalan Jie’s treatment to him. She repeatedly offered to serve him again if necessary. Yan Xiao ultimately removed the Brand Poison, restoring seventy to eighty percent of Nalan Jie's Dou Qi cultivation and securing the Nalan Clan's future. 78 84 86

Before the treatment, Nalan Jie had urged Yanran to apologize to Xiao Yan and consider reconciliation. She refused to seek a renewed relationship merely because Xiao Yan’s talent and family fortunes had recovered, insisting that the Three-Year Agreement would settle their grievances even if she lost. Nalan Jie also recognized her affection for Yan Xiao and encouraged her to spend time with him. 73

During Nalan Jie’s treatment, Yanran began regretting the public and humiliating manner in which she had attempted to end the engagement. She later escorted Yan Xiao to the Nalan Clan treasury to select his payment, using the opportunity to ask about his future travels and how she might contact him. He chose the Seven Illusion Green Spirit Saliva and other medicinal herbs, leaving two Sixth-Tier pill formulas in exchange for the herbs. 79 86

At the Alchemist Conference, Yanran questioned Yun Yun about her apparent intimacy with Yan Xiao. Yun Yun explained that they had recently met and that Yan Xiao had refined Yanran’s Three-Pattern Green Spirit Pill; Yun Jing supported the explanation. Yanran apologized for questioning her master, although Yun Yun’s concern for Yan Xiao during his pill refinement continued to trouble her. 91 94

Before the Three-Year Agreement, Yanran personally apologized to Xiao Zhan and the Xiao Clan for the manner in which she had broken the engagement. Believing she would otherwise lose, she accepted Yun Yun’s Three-Pattern Green Spirit Pill despite its risks. 102

At the Three-Year Agreement, Yanran fought Xiao Yan as a Nine-Star Da Dou Shi and used her strongest technique, but could not force him to use Dou Qi. After her defeat, Xiao Yan apologized for his earlier harshness and offered his hand; his voice, build, and mannerisms renewed her suspicions that he was Yan Xiao. 103 104

Despite her defeat, Yanran’s performance strengthened her public reputation. Following the duel, Xiao Yan and Yanran were hailed as the Jia Ma Empire’s first and second greatest geniuses, respectively, bringing additional prestige to the Xiao Clan, Nalan Clan, and Misty Cloud Sect. 105

Yanran confronted Yan Xiao directly and confirmed that he was Xiao Yan when he removed his mask. She confessed her feelings, but Xiao Yan rejected her, arguing that she loved the celebrated Yan Xiao rather than the former “worthless” Xiao Yan whose talent had vanished. 105 106

When Xiao Yan later visited the Misty Cloud Sect, Yanran attempted to remain near him by serving tea. He deliberately invoked his closeness with Yun Yun and stated that he would choose Yun Yun over Yanran, causing Yanran to flee the reception room in distress. 109

The Misty Cloud Sect was subsequently disbanded following Xiao Yan’s confrontation with Yun Shan and his allies. Yanran’s immediate response and whereabouts after the conflict are not documented. Later, while Yun Yun was an elder of Music Valley, Yanran was away at the Heavenly Mountain Blood Pool seeking a breakthrough; whether she succeeded there is not stated. 121 298

In the following years, Yanran trained in the Northern Region and repeatedly entered dangerous secret realms and ruins to obtain resources. Her lingering regret over Xiao Yan drove these efforts. Although she did not openly approach him, she secretly watched him from within crowds on several occasions and became increasingly conscious of the distance between them. Her cultivation advanced rapidly, eventually reaching Dou Venerate. 392 393

While exploring a Dou Saint ruin in the Northern Region, Yanran encountered a Ninth-Rank Magical Beast that gravely wounded her with a single blow. She activated a formation in a cave to conceal her presence and sent Yun Yun a message asking for help. A silver-white flame remained in her abdominal wound, forcing her to expend Dou Qi merely to prevent it from spreading while she continued to lose blood. 392

Yun Yun brought Xiao Yan into the ruin and located Yanran’s faint presence. Yanran opened the cave formation for them, and Xiao Yan suppressed the Nine Dragon Lightning Flame in her wound before healing her with the Life Spirit Flame. He then sent Yanran and Yun Yun out of the ruin while he confronted the beast, which proved to be a Two-Star Dou Saint Ancient Thunder Dragon. Yanran was saddened to find neither affection nor resentment in Xiao Yan’s gaze, only indifference. 392

After Xiao Yan subdued the Ancient Thunder Dragon, Yanran was stunned to learn that even a Two-Star Dou Saint was no match for him. Having only recently reached Dou Venerate through repeated life-threatening efforts, she felt that the widening gap rendered those efforts meaningless. She returned with Xiao Yan and Yun Yun to Tian Shu City on the dragon, then accompanied Yun Yun and Xiao Yi Xian to wait in Xiao Yan’s Small Courtyard. 393

Personality

Yanran initially possesses considerable pride in her status as the Misty Cloud Sect’s young sect mistress. Her defeat by Xiao Yan deeply wounds that pride, and praise from others only reminds her of the gap she still wishes to overcome. 2 27 28

She is exceptionally determined. Rather than abandon the Three-Year Agreement, she trains intensely for three years and risks the uncertain effects of the Three-Pattern Green Spirit Pill for the chance to fight Xiao Yan at her strongest. 27 102

Her devotion to Nalan Jie reveals a more self-sacrificing side. To obtain treatment for his Brand Poison, she humbles herself before Yan Xiao, volunteers as his maid, and remains willing to do so again after he begins treating her grandfather. 31 78

Yanran is also prone to wishful interpretations concerning Yan Xiao. She mistakes his early arrival in the Imperial Capital for concern over her and initially interprets his secret role in her release as proof of his soft-heartedness toward her. 46 77
