Background / History
The Witch Race has fought the Demon Race since before the current Witch-Demon conflict intensified. Eastern Emperor Taiyi's inherited memories describe repeated, brutal battles against them and the heavy responsibility of protecting the demons who stood behind him. The Twelve Ancestral Witches, particularly their leader Di Jiang, were remembered as formidable opponents. 2
The race is organized into twelve tribes associated with the Ancestral Witches. In the period before Taiyi's expedition to Buzhou Mountain, the Houtu, Gonggong, and Gou Mang Tribes each mobilized forces around strategically important regions, while the wider race increased training, patrols, and supply stockpiles. The Houtu Tribe reportedly massed at least one hundred thousand warriors in the southwest, while Gonggong and Gou Mang forces also operated around Buzhou Mountain, the East Sea, and Kunlun Mountain. 4 13
Pangu Hall is their ancestral land, bloodline source, and absolute spiritual sanctuary. After Taiyi infiltrated the hall, obtained the Heaven-Opening Axe Imprint insight, and carved the words “Eastern Emperor Taiyi, visited here” into its wall, the Ancestral Witches treated the act as an unforgivable desecration. Di Jiang placed all tribes on wartime alert, ordered a concealed internal investigation, and directed a full pursuit of Taiyi. 23 27
Although the Witch Race concealed the Pangu Hall incident from outsiders, its tribes subsequently increased troop movements, reinforced Buzhou Mountain and important resource sites, and continued pursuing Taiyi. Three Great Witches later ambushed him during his return from the Sea of Blood, demonstrating that the pursuit had developed into coordinated operations beyond simple territorial searches. 27 34 35
The Twelve Ancestral Witches eventually issued a formal challenge to the Demon Race, setting a battle beneath Buzhou Mountain one hundred years later. The letter accused the Demon Race of neglecting the Great Wilderness and declared that the Witch Race would “uphold justice on Heaven's behalf,” though the underlying struggle remained one for territory, resources, and dominion. 54 55
Houtu's growing concern for the unreturned souls of the dead gradually set her apart from her siblings' immediate war priorities. After witnessing countless drifting souls across the Great Wilderness and the Blood Sea, she resolved to mend the flaw in reincarnation by transforming herself into the Dao. Her eventual establishment of reincarnation deprived the Witch Race of one of its greatest combatants and left its supreme formation incomplete. 91 102 105
Following the Final Battle of the Heavenly Dao, the Witch Race established Ancestral Witch City in the Northern Reed Continent. Though tensions with the Demon Race remained, the two peoples could occasionally trade and no longer fought openly. 108
Appearance
Witch Race members are physically powerful humanoids whose bodies and equipment emphasize strength, hunting, and battle rather than refinement.
- Members may be bare-chested because they consider clothing cumbersome to physical combat. 15
- Their bodies are painted with colored mineral-pigment tribal totems. 15
- Patrols and ordinary warriors use crude but practical weapons such as stone spears, stone knives, stone axes, bone clubs, and beast-sinew whips. 15 21
- Their warriors are commonly described as tall, muscular, and imposing; elite soldiers can exceed ten feet in height and carry massive axes, warhammers, and throwing spears. 15 18 91 92
- The Ancestral Witches possess varied, non-human forms reflecting their respective authorities. Di Jiang is described as a faceless cinnabar-red, sack-like being with six legs and four wings. 27
Society and Culture
The Witch Race values physical strength, tribal honor, and direct emotional expression. A hunting party considered its Mountain Boar tusks both a tribal honor and valuable material for forging Witch artifacts; Taiyi's seizure of them was viewed as an insult to the entire Houtu Tribe. 15
Their emotions are portrayed as straightforward: warriors celebrate even limited victories with feasting, drinking, dancing, and challenges of strength, while defeats and insults provoke immediate anger. 19 Face and vengeance carry substantial weight, as shown when the Houtu Tribe sought to answer the humiliation of its hunting party and the entire race rallied after Pangu Hall was defiled. 16 27
Despite this reputation, the race is not politically uniform. Houtu opposed the ambush against Taiyi, Xuan Ming's position was uncertain, and Di Jiang suppressed internal dissent. 36
The Twelve Ancestral Witches govern through council deliberation in the Ancestral Witch Hall, though Di Jiang retains final authority. Their internal debates reveal sharp disagreements over strategy, Nuwa's ascension, and the degree of risk acceptable in the war against the Demon Race. 91
The Witch Race seeks to prove its Dao through strength and traditionally places martial concerns above the fate of other races' dead. Houtu's compassion toward wandering souls and her belief that reincarnation required repair therefore represented an unusual and consequential departure from prevailing Witch Race priorities. 91 102
While the race remains famed for direct warfare, its later border operations become increasingly disciplined and tactical. Units conduct controlled probes, orderly withdrawals, and coordinated offensives rather than relying solely on brute force; some of these tactics bear signs of covert Western Religion influence. 91 93
Abilities & Skills
Physical Constitution
The Witch Race does not cultivate Primordial Spirits or follow Heavenly Fate. Its members instead rely on the power of their bloodlines and the earth beneath their feet. 2
- Their bodies are exceptionally durable, with strength that Taiyi considers unreasonable. 2
- Their vitality and regenerative capacity are extreme; Kuafu began regrowing a severed arm during battle. 16
- Buzhou Mountain's lingering Pangu pressure strengthens the Witch Race while suppressing Demon Race bloodlines. 15 21
- Great Witches serve as powerful combatants and sentinels; the guards within Pangu Hall's Fiend Spirit array are each assessed at roughly peak Great Witch strength. 21 22
- Ordinary Witch warriors possess physical defenses strong enough that conventional Demon Race spells and arrows may cause only minor wounds, while their heavy weapons can rapidly break fortified walls. 92
- The bloodlines of the Ancestral Witches resonate with Earth Vein Turbid Qi, granting exceptional perception of disturbances within the land and its earth veins. 63
Ancestral Witch Laws
The Twelve Ancestral Witches possess authorities tied to specific natural or conceptual domains.
- Di Jiang — space; uses spatial pressure, tears space for movement, and employs Spatial Severance Divine Ability. 16 17
- Gou Mang — wood. 21
- Zhu Rong — fire. 21
- Ru Shou — metal. 21
- Gonggong — water. 21
- Xuan Ming — rain; her Law of Rain can freeze passages, form Corrosive Bone Cold Rain, and employ Primordial Heavy Water. She can also trace events through memories retained in water vapor. Her high-purity bloodline also permits a secret art that traces auras through Earth Vein Turbid Qi, and she can investigate traces of causality-disrupting spatial power. 19 21 25 63 72
- Qiang Liang — lightning; he later commands a thirty-thousand-warrior northern-front offensive against the Demon Race. 21 96 97
- Zhu Jiuyin — time. 21
- Tian Wu — wind. 21
- Xi Zi — electricity. 21
- She Bishi — weather. 21
- Houtu — earth; her bond with the land lets her perceive the suffering of wandering souls, ultimately leading her to establish reincarnation. 21 91 102 105
Pangu Hall Defenses
Pangu Hall is protected by layered restrictions designed to exclude intruders and defend the Witch Race's ancestral legacy. 20 22
- The outer layer incorporates the Du Tian Divine Fiend Formation. 22
- An Earth Vein Tainted Qi barrier requires Witch Race bloodline or a Chaos attribute to pass. 22
- A bloodline-verification restriction triggers an alarm against those who are not direct descendants of the Ancestral Witches. 22
- Other documented defenses include Fiend Spirit guards, time-space stasis, inner-demon illusions, karma tracing, a Pangu pressure field, and the sealed hall door. 22
- Pangu Hall is also identified as the core of the Twelve Capital Gods and Fiends Formation, the Witch Race's ultimate collective formation. 20 54
Territories and Sacred Sites
- Buzhou Mountain — Core Witch Race territory and a place where Pangu's residual pressure enhances their power. Multiple Witch encampments, patrol routes, and tribal forces operate around its foothills. 15 21
- Pangu Hall — The Witch Race's ancestral land, sacred hall, and the center of its spiritual identity. It is guarded by sentinels and extensive restrictions, with twelve pillars bearing the Ancestral Witches' totems outside. 10 21 27
- Wind Burial Valley — A strategically defensible valley on Buzhou Mountain's western foothills where the Houtu, Gonggong, and Gou Mang Tribes gathered at least fifty thousand warriors. 18
- Ancestral Witch Hall — A council hall at the foot of Buzhou Mountain where the Twelve Ancestral Witches meet to determine the race's military and political direction. 91
- Northern Darkness — The region from which Xuan Ming monitors Earth Vein Turbid Qi and conducts long-range bloodline-based tracking. 63
- Ancestral Witch City — A later Witch Race city in the Northern Reed Continent, established after the Final Battle of the Heavenly Dao. 108
Relationships
- Demon Race — Long-standing enemy and principal rival during the Witch-Demon conflict. Their rivalry develops into formal challenges, coordinated border campaigns, and large-scale war preparations, though the two races later enter a tense coexistence that includes occasional trade. 2 54 91 93 108
- Eastern Emperor Taiyi — Major adversary. He provoked a Houtu Tribe hunting party, defeated Kuafu, fought Di Jiang, infiltrated Pangu Hall, and desecrated it with an inscription. The Ancestral Witches later regard his foreign, Chaos Demon God-related power as a major danger and continue adapting their preparations around him. 15 16 17 23 27 72 91
- Di Jiang — Leader among the Ancestral Witches and chief voice behind the pursuit of Taiyi after the Pangu Hall incident. He later directs the Witch Race's strategic probes against the Demon Race following Nuwa's ascension. 16 27 91
- Xuan Ming — Ancestral Witch who investigated Taiyi's altered power, pursued him through the earth veins, and continued to lead efforts to locate him. She later commands the eastern-front probe and reports that Taiyi possesses a foreign power capable of disrupting causality and evading Heavenly Dao perception. 19 25 27 72 91
- Houtu — Ancestral Witch associated with earth and the Houtu Tribe. She takes a more measured view of Taiyi's anomalous methods and urges investigation into their origin. Her increasing compassion for the dead leads her to establish reincarnation, removing her from the Witch Race's former martial structure. 21 27 91 102 105
- Kuafu — Great Witch who came to reclaim the Mountain Boar tusks and demand one of Taiyi's arms; he was defeated but survived due to the Witch Race's formidable vitality. 16
- Nuwa — Her ascension to sainthood causes the Witch Race to reassess its war strategy. The Ancestral Witches test whether she will intervene in small-scale Witch-Demon clashes, while Houtu argues that a saint must uphold Heavenly Dao impartiality. 91
- Western Religion — A covert and unreliable outside influence. Battlefield intelligence indicates that the Western Religion secretly aids the Witch Race with tactical methods in order to accelerate the Witch-Demon conflict and profit from its consequences. 93
Story Role / Major Arcs
Escalating Witch-Demon Tensions
Witch tribal deployments around Buzhou Mountain, the East Sea, and Kunlun Mountain alarm the Heavenly Court. Taiyi responds by leading three thousand demon soldiers to Buzhou Mountain to probe their intentions and display Heavenly Court authority. 13 14
Buzhou Mountain Provocation
Taiyi infiltrates a Houtu Tribe hunting party, injures its members, and steals its Mountain Boar tusks to provoke a response. Kuafu arrives to retaliate, followed by Di Jiang and Xuan Ming; Taiyi defeats Kuafu and withdraws after confronting the Ancestral Witches. 15 16
Wind Burial Valley Standoff
The Houtu, Gonggong, and Gou Mang Tribes gather at least fifty thousand warriors at Wind Burial Valley. Taiyi interprets the mobilization as an attempt at intimidation and sends a three-hundred-man force to create the appearance of a larger Heavenly Court deployment without committing to battle. 18
Desecration of Pangu Hall
Taiyi infiltrates Buzhou Mountain under a simulated Great Witch aura, bypasses Pangu Hall's restrictions, signs in at its core, and engraves a message into the hall. The resulting clash with Pangu's residual will nearly kills him, while the Chaos Bell's chime alerts the Witch Race and powerful beings across the Great Wilderness. 21 22 23 24
Race-Wide Pursuit
The Ancestral Witches discover the inscription and react with fury. Di Jiang orders every tribe into wartime readiness, conceals the incident from outsiders, and launches an extensive search for Taiyi through Witch territory and the earth veins. 27
Formal Challenge and War Preparations
The Twelve Ancestral Witches issue a joint challenge letter demanding battle beneath Buzhou Mountain in one hundred years. In preparation, Witch tribes intensify formation drills, patrols, and military deployments as Calamity Qi deepens across the Great Wilderness. 54 63 78
Post-Saint Border Probes
After Nuwa becomes a saint, Di Jiang authorizes controlled conflicts along the eastern, southern, and northern fronts to test both the Demon Race's defenses and Nuwa's willingness to intervene. Xuan Ming leads the eastern probe, Ru Shou oversees the southern force, and Qiang Liang takes responsibility for the northern front. 91
Border Friction Escalates
The supposedly limited probes inflict major damage on Demon Race defenses. Witch forces breach Blackstone Fort, conduct calculated withdrawals after testing reinforcements, and repeatedly pressure the second line of defense with increasingly organized tactics. 92 93
Northern Front Offensive
Qiang Liang personally leads thirty thousand Witch Race warriors against the northern front, breaking the Demon Race's second defensive line and severely wounding Ji Meng before Taiyi uses the Chaos Bell to cover a retreat. 96 97
Houtu and Reincarnation
Houtu journeys through former battlefields and the Blood Sea, where she witnesses the suffering of countless souls left without a destination after death. Rejecting Styx's view that this fate cannot be changed, she resolves to complete reincarnation by transforming herself into the Dao. 102 105
Post-War Settlement
Following the Final Battle of the Heavenly Dao, the Witch Race survives as a continuing people in Ancestral Witch City of the Northern Reed Continent. Its relationship with the Demon Race shifts from open warfare to wary coexistence and occasional exchange. 108
