Background / History

Chen Qiang was an ordinary young man before transmigrating into the One Piece world. He appeared directly inside Impel Down, where Hannyabal had him tortured daily in an attempt to learn how he entered the prison. His Super Regeneration allowed him to survive the abuse that would otherwise have killed him. 2

He turned his imprisonment into a cycle of escape, capture, injury, and recovery. His repeated breakouts made him infamous throughout Level 6 and forced Magellan to personally suppress him with poison, the principal weakness of his regenerative ability. 1 2 17

Having prior knowledge of events surrounding the Summit War, Chen Qiang anticipated Luffy’s arrival at Impel Down and sought an escape route that would also allow him to save Ace. 1 5

Chen Qiang is a nearly two-meter-tall young man with long hair and handsome features. His wanted poster depicts him bare-chested and covered in blood amid a battlefield. 18 23

He is independent-minded and refuses to align himself with people whose principles he rejects, such as Blackbeard. His desire to save Ace stems partly from his refusal to accept the regret of Ace’s death in his former life. 3 5

Chen Qiang is protective toward those he considers his own, especially Lin. He signs a Symbiotic Contract to take her injuries, helps rescue her villagers, and leaves her a finger so he can return if destroyed. 24 28 43

Impel Down Escape

Chen Qiang uses his knowledge of Luffy’s impending prison break to secure an escape from Level 6. He joins Luffy’s group, defeats and kills Hannyabal, opens the Gates of Justice, destroys their controls to prevent a quick closure, and seizes a Marine warship for the escapees. 1 2 3 4

Summit War

At Marineford, Chen Qiang openly challenges the Marines’ definition of justice and declares his intention to save Ace. He uses deception and blood manipulation to pull Ace away from Sengoku, then absorbs Sengoku’s shockwaves while carrying Ace toward safety. 7 8 9

He also uses Blood Control to temporarily move Oars and offers Whitebeard a brief return to peak condition in exchange for the certainty of death once the effect ends. 9 11

Stranding and the Defu Slave Ship

After Kuma sends him away from the war, Chen Qiang lands in the ocean and survives on a wooden plank through fishing, seawater, and regeneration. Captain Gill’s merchant ship later rescues him, only to sedate and imprison him for his bounty. 16 17 19 21

Chen Qiang develops immunity to the sedatives, escapes his restraints, and frees Lin from captivity. Learning that her villagers have been taken through the slave trade, he commits himself to helping her find them. 22 23 24

Copperfield Rebellion

In Copperfield, Chen Qiang witnesses the city’s slave system and resolves to destroy it. He enters a Symbiotic Contract with Lin, storms Toby’s palace, survives the Gem Space and Poison Gem, and forces Toby to retreat. 26 28 30 35

After taking control of the city’s broadcast system, he gives slaves one day to win their freedom by killing slavers or merchants and presenting their bodies as tickets out of Copperfield. His clones remove slaves’ collars and shackles while he blocks the docks to prevent slave traders from fleeing. 38 39

Chen Qiang ultimately destroys Copperfield’s ships, kills Toby, and triggers explosions intended to collapse the entire cavern. The collapse buries CP agents, slave traders, and slaves still inside; Chen Qiang escapes through regeneration from the finger held by Lin. 44 46 48 49

Calm Belt
