Appearance

Whitebeard is a towering man who enters Marineford carrying a massive Guan Dao. By the closing stages of the Summit War, his body is heavily wounded and covered in blood, yet he remains standing until his final moments 6 14 15.

Personality

Whitebeard treats his crew as sons and places their survival above his own. After Squard stabs him under Akainu’s manipulation, he forgives him rather than retaliating, later stopping Squard from sacrificing himself in an attempt at redemption 8 10.

He is resolute and accepts death without abandoning responsibility for his family. Once Ace is freed, he orders the Whitebeard Pirates to return safely to the New World while he remains behind to hold off the Marines 10 11. Teach’s betrayal is the exception to his paternal mercy: Whitebeard considers him unworthy of being called his son because Teach killed a crewmate 15.

Whitebeard emerges from beneath Marineford’s inner bay aboard one of three ships, confronts Sengoku, asks after Ace, and uses his tremor power to violently agitate the sea 6.

Rescue of Ace

After Squard’s betrayal, Whitebeard forgives him and turns his fury on the Marines. He blocks Sengoku’s attack to protect Chen Qiang and Ace, fights the Admirals, and ultimately declares that the pirates’ objective has been achieved once Ace is freed 8 10.

Final Stand

Whitebeard orders every member of his crew to retreat to the New World, then destroys Marine Headquarters with a single punch to cover their escape 10 11. Chen Qiang restores him to temporary peak condition, allowing Whitebeard to battle Sengoku, Garp, Aokiji, and Kizaru alone 11 12.

Death

After his temporary restoration expires, Whitebeard confronts Teach. His tremor power is absorbed by the Dark-Dark Fruit, but he still wounds Teach with his Guan Dao. Teach and his crew then attack him together, killing him after he declares that One Piece is real 14 15.
