Background and History
Karin enters the Chūnin Exams as part of a Kusagakure team. During the Forest of Death stage, her two teammates leave her with their scroll. Su Yu intervenes when a bear threatens her, reveals their shared Uzumaki ancestry, and promises to protect and train her. He lets her bite his arm to absorb chakra as a gesture of trust, then escorts her to the Heaven and Earth Tower, where she is safe but out of the competition 18 21.
Yakushi Kabuto subsequently arranges for Karin to leave Kusagakure. She is stationed in the Land of Waves by the time Su Yu arrives after departing Konoha. There, she studies sealing jutsu, signs a contract with Katsuyu, and begins learning medical ninjutsu 19 24 28 30 31.
Su Yu later recommends Karin to Fifth Hokage Tsunade as a potential Nine-Tails jinchūriki. He tells Karin that training in Konoha—particularly under Tsunade—could help her grow stronger. Though reluctant to leave him and their household, she agrees to go. He promises her a Flying Thunder God–marked kunai so he can visit her; before her departure, he gives her a necklace 41 50.
