Background / History

Nagato was born in the Land of Rain to Fuso, an Uzumaki refugee living under an assumed identity, and a civilian father. His Uzumaki bloodline grants enormous chakra reserves and vitality, allowing him to endure the Rinnegan’s otherwise lethal chakra drain. His red hair turns white when his chakra is severely depleted. 89

As a child in war-torn Amegakure, Nagato survived alongside Yahiko and Konan. The three became students of Jiraiya, who remained in the Land of Rain for three years to teach them ninjutsu and help them become self-sufficient. 63 171 213

After Jiraiya’s departure, Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan founded Akatsuki as a peace-oriented organization. Hanzō of the Salamander later lured them into a false peace meeting, seized Konan, and forced Nagato to choose between her life and Yahiko’s. Yahiko impaled himself on Nagato’s kunai; Nagato responded by summoning the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and eventually took control of Akatsuki, turning Yahiko’s body into the Deva Path. 171 184 213

Nagato subsequently killed Hanzō, brought Amegakure under Akatsuki’s control, and adopted a doctrine of imposing peace through overwhelming pain and the deterrence of the Tailed Beasts. 64 184

Nagato is an Uzumaki with long red hair and ripple-patterned purple Rinnegan. The strain of his powers often leaves him gaunt and causes portions of his hair to turn white. 89

His conviction often becomes arrogance. He initially underestimates Minato during the Nine-Tails operation, then grows desperate as the Six Paths Puppets are destroyed and his chakra reserves collapse. 76 77 81

Nagato is highly sensitive about the mask Shisui gave him, interpreting even compliments about it as mockery. He channels this humiliation into a fixation on surpassing Shisui and reclaiming his lost power. 118 146 206
