Background

During the Iwagakure ambush, Obito fought beside Kakashi Hatake after Rin Nohara was abducted. Enraged by the situation, he killed the Iwa-nin Taiseki with a kunai strike through the heart, awakening his Two-Tomoe Sharingan in the process. He then pursued the fleeing enemy despite his unstable condition and demanded Rin's return. 3

Shisui Uchiha arrived before Obito and Kakashi could be overwhelmed, creating the opening that allowed the team to reach Rin. Obito immediately rushed into the enemy cave to rescue her, only for Shisui to shield him and Rin from Kakkō's trap. 3 4

After the mission, Obito repeatedly sought training from Shisui. With Minato Namikaze's approval, Shisui accepted the persistent Obito as a junior brother figure; Obito later trained in the Rasengan and eventually mastered its basic use. 7 69 107

By Konoha Year 58, Obito had become an Anbu squad captain and a Hokage guard, but his resentment toward Itachi's greater authority within the Konoha Military Police Force grew into a fixation. Black Zetsu exploited this insecurity and convinced him to abandon Konoha, his teacher, and the Uchiha clan for Akatsuki. 173 174

Obito is emotionally intense, competitive, and deeply driven by recognition. He cannot accept being treated as inferior to Itachi despite sharing the Three-Tomoe Sharingan and having trained under Shisui. His defection stems less from hatred of Konoha than from dissatisfaction and envy. 174 180 190

His emotional instability undermines his judgment. During the clash with Itachi and the Five, he lashes out at Tayuya after being deceived by Itachi's clone, then retreats rather than continuing a coordinated fight. 181
