Background / History
Konoha and Akatsuki
A former student of Sarutobi Hiruzen, Orochimaru leaves Konoha without completely abandoning his attachment to either his teacher or the village. His earlier research includes helping transplant an arm containing the First Hokage’s cells onto Danzo 13 51 155.
As an Akatsuki member, he meets Chiya and Itachi after their arrival. Chiya’s destruction of the Sarutobi clan provokes concealed killing intent, but Orochimaru is also interested in his abilities. He openly prefers partnering with Itachi over Sasori, and news that Itachi survived an encounter with the Fourth Mizukage intensifies his desire for the Sharingan 51 56 66.
Orochimaru attacks Itachi, only to fall into genjutsu and lose his left arm. Kabuto rescues him, but Chiya intercepts them and takes advantage of their vulnerability. Orochimaru bargains with his collection of ninjutsu; Chiya obtains summoning and defensive scrolls while also demanding the Flying Thunder God technique. Orochimaru subsequently escapes the Akatsuki, and Chiya presents his stolen ring as evidence of betrayal 67 68 69.
Pursuit and Konoha Crush Preparations
During the pursuit of Orochimaru, he reanimates the Third Kazekage against Sasori and Deidara. Chiya persuades the Kazekage to reject his role as a pawn, ending the reanimation, then strikes Orochimaru with a deliberately weakened Rasenshuriken. Orochimaru barely escapes through two successive substitutions, leaving an empty body behind 75 76.
Orochimaru later acknowledges that Chiya intentionally spared him. Their next negotiation exposes his Konoha Crush strategy: cooperate with Sunagakure, kill Rasa, impersonate the Fourth Kazekage, and confront Hiruzen during the Chunin Exams. Chiya asks to join Rasa’s assassination with Pakura and later confirms that they helped carry it out 98 104 116.
The plan has two central objectives: remove Hiruzen and obtain Sasuke as a vessel. Orochimaru’s defeat by Itachi makes Uchiha power especially attractive, while Kimimaro’s fatal illness undermines another prospective vessel. Chiya exploits Sasuke’s importance to keep pressuring Orochimaru for Flying Thunder God 98 116.
Hiruzen’s Final Battle
Orochimaru uses Dosu as a sacrifice to reanimate Hashirama before the invasion. He explains that he wants Konoha’s “stagnant windmill” to turn again, rather than simply destroying the village 143.
After Chiya’s revelations damage Hiruzen’s reputation, Orochimaru requests that the Chunin Exams finals begin early. His intention is to give his teacher a dignified death while Hiruzen can still die publicly as Hokage. He also wants Jiraiya and Tsunade present as spectators 155.
During their confrontation, Orochimaru summons Hashirama and Tobirama against Hiruzen. Chiya enters the barrier and exposes further secrets, while Orochimaru remains under Kyōka Suigetsu and does not realize how many people are listening. Hiruzen ultimately dies after sealing the soul portions corresponding to Orochimaru’s hands, depriving him of his jutsu 166 168 169 170.
Orochimaru begs Chiya for help and finally relinquishes Flying Thunder God. The sealing leaves him in continuous burning pain, while his incompatible replacement body deteriorates. He orders Kabuto to bring Sasuke immediately and rejects seeking Tsunade’s treatment, believing the new Fifth Hokage would kill him 170 205.
Sasuke, Research, and Defeat
Despite warnings about Sasuke and Chiya’s interference, Orochimaru insists that immortality will protect him from suffering Hiruzen’s fate at a disciple’s hands. Sasuke eventually defects to his side 209 229.
At the Heaven and Earth Bridge, Orochimaru fights Naruto’s Four-Tails form. Chiya interrupts on an Akatsuki assassination mission, but turns the encounter into another bargain: original First Hokage cells, the Dust Release training method, and access to Sasuke. Orochimaru agrees to provide the cells and meeting, while claiming Dust Release is inaccessible 248 249 250.
In his laboratory, Orochimaru eagerly accepts Chiya’s pregnancy-inducing medicine, the River of Child and Mother Water. It creates a uterus inside him, prompting his interest in reproducing rare bloodlines. He later gives birth to Mitsuki, but regards her primarily as an experimental subject 252 269.
Sasuke attacks while Orochimaru is weakened after childbirth. Orochimaru counters with the White Phosphorus Great Snake’s bodily fluid, which contains both an anesthetic and Chiya’s medicine. His subsequent abuse of Sasuke triggers Sasuke’s Mangekyō Sharingan, though Orochimaru fails to recognize the awakening 269 270.
After his attempt to seize the Three-Tails fails, Orochimaru proceeds with Living Corpse Reincarnation despite worsening rejection and another pregnancy. Sasuke reverses the ritual, consumes Orochimaru, and takes his power. Kabuto preserves the unborn child and later grafts Orochimaru’s serpent remains onto himself 272 273 274.
Sealing and Wartime Return
Orochimaru later emerges during Sasuke’s confrontation with Itachi and is sealed by the Totsuka Blade. His subsequent return is explained as an independently surviving clone, not the original trapped in the blade’s Drunken Dream Space 296 387.
After returning, he reanimates the First through Fourth Hokage using White Zetsu sacrifices and takes another White Zetsu as his vessel. He recounts Chiya’s account of Konoha’s political crimes, challenges Tobirama’s treatment of the Uchiha, and helps Sasuke question the meaning of a village and a shinobi 383 384 385.
Orochimaru initially keeps the revived Hokage under his control until they address Sasuke’s wishes. He later goes to rescue the Five Kage, but cannot dispel Chiya’s restraints on Gaara and the Tsuchikage. When Kabuto reveals his allegiance to Chiya and demonstrates Sage Mode, Orochimaru acknowledges his former subordinate’s strength and chooses not to fight him 388 397 408.
Appearance
- Golden, slit-pupiled eyes: His gaze is repeatedly compared to a snake’s 51 66 269.
- Long tongue: Frequently used in his unnerving smiles and expressions of interest 56 66 168.
- Long hair and extensible neck: At the Heaven and Earth Bridge, his neck stretches hundreds of meters while his hair billows around his suspended head 249.
- Pale complexion: Bodily rejection leaves him visibly drained of color 269.
- Serpent form: His revealed form is called the White Phosphorus Great Snake; his remains are also described as the White Scale Great Serpent 269 274.
Personality
Orochimaru combines scientific curiosity with ruthless exploitation. He treats powerful bodies, rare bloodlines, and even his own child as resources for research or possession. His enthusiasm for Chiya’s medicine immediately centers on its potential to “mass-produce geniuses” 98 252 269.
His attachment to Hiruzen and Konoha survives his defection. The Konoha Crush is intended both to end his teacher’s life with dignity and to disrupt the village’s stagnation. That sentiment does not prevent him from sacrificing subordinates or endangering the village to achieve his aims 143 155.
Repeated humiliation by Chiya turns his fascination into resentment. He hopes the Mangekyō Sharingan will let him overcome Chiya’s genjutsu, but his confidence in immortality blinds him to Sasuke’s counterattack. He is more pragmatic when confronted by the stronger, Sage Mode–trained Kabuto, declining a fight 205 209 273 408.

- Poor soul compatibility causes severe bodily rejection 205.
- Sasuke exploits the ritual’s weakness to reverse it and consume him 272 273.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Reanimates dead shinobi through living sacrifices, including Dosu and White Zetsu 143 383.
