Background / History

Rei traveled with her parents, Ukyo and Kei, and their escort Ken when their carriage encountered rogue Iwagakure ninja Shan Yi's group. Though startled by the scene of slaughter, she showed no fear and immediately condemned the attackers as wicked. After Ukyo's group rescued Ye Wuji, Rei helped bring him into the carriage and ultimately into her family's care 22 24.

After arriving in the Land of Waterfalls, Rei explained that the country avoided war largely because of its remote, mountainous geography, its aquatic resources, and Takigakure's deterrent strength 24. During the Daimyo's inauguration ceremony, she wore formal dress and a crown, brought Ye Wuji to the platform near the Sacred Tree, and argued for him to be given a seat despite the protocol objections 25.

When Ye disappeared during Kakuzu's attack on Takigakure, Rei and the household searched for him. She was openly relieved when he returned safely with Fu's assistance 29. Later, Rei persuaded her parents to arrange for Shennong to teach Ye medicine, believing medical training would allow him to keep pace with Yuta's talent for samurai training 35 36.

Her teasing is paired with sincere protectiveness. She worries when Ye is missing, argues that he should not be left alone after frightening events, and secretly arranges his opportunity to study under Shennong 29 36. Rei also has a strong competitive streak: she wants Ye to surpass Yuta through medicine and refuses to lose face during her dispute with Mai over a hair clip 36 44.

Rei is impulsive with money and often tries to make Ye pay for treats or purchases during the New Year outing. Her parents deliberately entrust the shared funds to Ye because they expect Rei to spend hers quickly 42 43.

Rei possesses an innate summoning beast known as the Ice Spirit. It had previously been sealed because it was often uncontrollable, but it suddenly awakened during the New Year period 42.
