Background / History
Sky Ninja survivor and researcher
Shennong was a medical ninja of the Sky Ninja Village. His exceptional medical ability contrasted with his poor combat strength; he had focused so completely on medicine that he could not protect surviving Sky Ninja remnants even when they were hunted down. 38
After the First Great Ninja War, the Sky Ninja Village began researching the Zero-Tails to obtain a strategic weapon comparable to the Tailed Beasts held by the Five Great Nations. Konoha destroyed the village over this research, leaving the project abandoned within Angkor Fortress. Shennong later discovered the surviving research and sample, then restarted the project in pursuit of revenge against Konoha. 39
He used his travels as a doctor to conceal two objectives: collecting unnoticed battlefield corpses for his Reanimation Technique research and searching for a body compatible with the Zero-Tails. His work eventually brought him into cooperation with Orochimaru, who used some of Shennong’s data while developing his own Body Rebirth Technique. 39 40
Stay in Takigakure
Shennong arrived in Takigakure as a widely respected wandering doctor. The village’s investigation found no issues with his background, and he cured the Land of Waterfalls’ Daimyo of poisoning within three days. 32 35
At Aunt Kei’s request, Shennong accepted Ye Wuji as a temporary medical student. Over two months, he taught Ye Wuji medicinal herbs, anatomy, detoxification, injury treatment, and practical care for injured animals. He praised Ye Wuji’s chakra control and intended to formally take him as an apprentice when he was older. 36 37
Death
When Shennong prepared to leave Takigakure, Ye Wuji lured him into a forest using a transformed Water Clone posing as someone aware of the Sky Ninja Village and the Zero-Tails. Shennong pursued the clone out of fear that his identity and research had been exposed. 38 40
Ye Wuji’s trap used hidden kunai, shuriken, senbon, Explosive Tags, and a clone rigged to restrain Shennong’s arm. The blast severed Shennong’s right arm, blinded one eye, and inflicted fatal wounds. Believing his attacker to be a fellow Sky Ninja, Shennong revealed Angkor Fortress’s location before dying. 40 41
Appearance
Shennong appeared to be a middle-aged man in his forties or fifties when he arrived at Ukyo’s household. His apparent age concealed the effects of his cellular-activation research. 35 36
- Long hair draped over his shoulders. 35
- Brown hat. 35
- Observant eyes capable of noticing subtle physical details, including grip marks, breathing, sweat, and gait. 35
Personality
Shennong cultivated the image of a compassionate, magnanimous physician. He treated poor civilians without payment, spoke of relieving the suffering caused by war, and readily agreed to teach medicine to Ye Wuji. 35 36
Behind this persona, he was secretive, calculating, and consumed by revenge against Konoha. He concealed his connection to the Land of Sky, treated anyone aware of his past as a threat, and used battlefield corpses and potential hosts to advance his research. 39 40
Abilities & Skills
Medical Ninjutsu
Shennong was an exceptionally accomplished medical ninja, described as potentially among the top three medical practitioners of his era and possibly superior to Tsunade at that time. 38
- Cured the Land of Waterfalls’ Daimyo of poison within three days. 35
- Taught anatomy involving muscles, bones, nerves, cells, meridians, and internal injuries. 37
- Specialized in treating wounds, fractures, trauma, poisons, and chakra-related bodily conditions. 37
- Could infer Ye Wuji’s sword practice from residual grip marks, controlled breathing, wiped sweat, and a steady gait. 35
- Had comparatively weak combat ability due to his focus on medical research. 38
Cellular Activation and Body Rebirth Technique
Shennong developed a body-focused longevity technique that continually activated the physical body with chakra. His apparent condition was maintained through a Cell Activation Jutsu. 36 39
- Extended his lifespan to give himself time to complete the Zero-Tails project. 39
- Focused on maintaining and activating the physical body rather than transferring the soul into new vessels. 39
- Required an immense chakra supply for full activation. 39
- His Cellular Activation knowledge was later studied by Ye Wuji. 50
Reanimation Technique Research
Shennong developed a Reanimation Technique through research involving battlefield corpses, particularly unnoticed orphaned victims. 39
- His research data contributed to Orochimaru’s later development of a separate Body Rebirth Technique. 39
- He kept two scrolls under close personal protection, though their exact contents were not confirmed. 38
Zero-Tails Research
Shennong resumed the Land of Sky’s abandoned Zero-Tails project within Angkor Fortress. 39
- Sought to create a strategic power source that could rival a Tailed Beast. 39
- Looked for a compatible host capable of enduring the Zero-Tails’ chakra. 39
- Treated civilians and traveled through war zones partly to locate suitable candidates while concealing his real work. 39 40
- His research and secrecy drove him to pursue Ye Wuji’s clone, leading directly to his death. 40
Equipment, Weapons & Resources

- Kunai — Used to deflect the kunai thrown by Ye Wuji’s transformed Water Clone. 38
- Angkor Fortress — Hidden Sky Ninja base associated with Shennong’s Zero-Tails research; contained a library, weapon caches, and medical supplies. 40 49
- Zero-Tails sample and research records — Surviving materials from the Sky Ninja Village’s original project. 39
Relationships
- Ye Wuji — Temporary medical student whom Shennong praised as a potential future apprentice; Ye Wuji secretly considered him a future threat and killed him for his scrolls and Angkor Fortress information. 36 38 40
- Orochimaru — Research collaborator; Orochimaru developed his own Body Rebirth Technique using some of Shennong’s data. 39 40
- Aunt Kei — Host who proposed Ye Wuji as Shennong’s apprentice and admired Shennong’s public benevolence. 36
- Ukyo — Host who learned of Ye Wuji’s aptitude through Shennong’s praise and respected Shennong’s medical expertise. 37
- Rei — Arranged for Shennong to teach Ye Wuji by persuading her family to host him. 36
- Land of Waterfalls’ Daimyo — Patient whose poison Shennong cured, prompting his stay in Takigakure. 35
