Background / History

Jiraiya trained under the Third Hokage alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. Their teacher used a two-bell exercise to test the three students, a memory Jiraiya recalls when Qiuyang throws him a bell while asking to become his disciple. He later mourns both Orochimaru’s defection and Tsunade’s disappearance from Konoha. 5

Before meeting Qiuyang, Jiraiya visited the Great Toad Sage of Mount Myoboku and received a prophecy: he would take on another scarlet-eyed disciple whose choices could lead him either toward Madara’s destructive path or Hashirama’s protective one. 6

Qiuyang finds Jiraiya peeping at a bathhouse after a month-long search. Initially dismissive, Jiraiya agrees to a bell-snatching challenge after the bell evokes memories of his own youth. Qiuyang ultimately exploits the Sharingan, a Shadow Clone, Flying Thunder God, and Chidori to take a bell; Jiraiya acknowledges his loss and accepts him as a student. 5 8

During the Konoha Crush, Jiraiya assigns Qiuyang to defend the west gate while he remains at the main gate to confront giant snakes and enemy jonin. The Third Hokage’s death leaves him grieving and blaming himself for not reaching his former master in time. 15 20

After returning to Konoha with Naruto, Jiraiya joins the response to the attack on Nadeshiko Village.
