Background / History

Hanabi is Hyūga Hiashi's youngest daughter and the intended heir of the Hyūga main house. Hiashi brings her on a mission against mountain bandits so that she can learn the realities of the ninja world, repeatedly stressing that she must remain calm and calculating. 12

While infiltrating the bandits' stronghold, Hanabi acts on her compassion for imprisoned captives and tries to free a little girl. The cage's chains are rigged with explosive tags; Hiashi shields Hanabi from the blast and is severely injured. Takisui, the Kirigakure rogue ninja leading the bandits, traps Hiashi and orders his men to capture Hanabi for her Byakugan. 12

Hanabi is restrained by the bandits until Qiuyang intervenes, frees her, and helps release Hiashi from the Water Prison Technique. She watches Qiuyang defeat Takisui with awe, considering him “truly, incredibly cool.” Afterward, he comforts her and gives her candy, while Hiashi tells her to strive to become as strong as Qiuyang. 13 14

At Hiashi's direction, Hanabi later seeks Qiuyang's guidance. She assists him in locating a dormant White Zetsu beneath the abandoned Uchiha compound, using her Byakugan in tandem with his Earth Release Sensing Technique. Her contribution allows Qiuyang to capture and seal the target. 21 22

Qiuyang expands Hanabi's training beyond the Hyūga Clan's traditional focus on Gentle Fist. He teaches her shurikenjutsu, ninjutsu, and tactical applications for the Byakugan, eventually taking her formally as his student after she aids his dangerous sealing operation. 27 40 43

Appearance

Hanabi is a pretty young girl with pale Byakugan eyes and long hair. During her spar with Qiuyang, a kunai cuts her hair tie, causing her hair to fall loose; Qiuyang later repurposes the bell from their exercise as a replacement hair tie. 40 41

Despite her fears, she is brave when entrusted with a task. She overcomes her unease in the Uchiha ruins to assist in searching for White Zetsu, and later agrees to help Qiuyang with the secretive and hazardous sealing process in his laboratory. 22 42 43

She is competitive and eager to meet her father's expectations, particularly after being compared to Neji. Her desire to prove the Hyūga Clan's strength motivates her spar with Qiuyang and contributes to her breakthrough in mastering Rotation. 21 40

Hanabi joins Qiuyang in his underground laboratory to assist with the sealing of Tailed Beast parts and a miniature Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.
