Background / History
Uchiha massacre and forced transformation
Sasuke grows up in the Uchiha Compound with his family. He reaches its center during the clan’s destruction and finds his father immobilized, Itachi grievously injured, and Ryūha overseeing the killing and capture of clansmen. His initial response is confusion and overwhelming fear 148 149.
Ryūha deliberately redirects that terror into hatred of Itachi, Konoha’s leadership, Sasuke’s own helplessness, and Ryūha himself. He offers power for revenge, then implants the Hōgyoku fragment. The resulting transformation threatens Sasuke’s identity with hallucinations and destructive impulses. Ryūha tells him that killing his tormentor is the only route to freedom and orders him to preserve Itachi as a “whetstone” for his development. Obito returns both brothers to the compound’s ruins 150 151.
Team Seven and departure from Konoha
As a Genin in Kakashi’s Team Seven, Sasuke accompanies Naruto and Sakura on an escort mission to Tanzaku Town. Although withdrawn, he displays field awareness beyond an ordinary Academy graduate. Hearing their client discuss Ryūha triggers a violent eruption of his implanted power; Kakashi cannot fully suppress it, and Ryūha’s unseen clone intervenes 163 164 165 166.
Sasuke subsequently helps defeat a rogue-ninja ambush and interrogates a prisoner about Las Noches. When Byakuya offers training at the Pure Soul Court, he accepts in hopes of controlling his power and obtaining revenge. Konoha does not forcibly retrieve him; Minato instead conceals his departure under the explanation of a long-term secret mission 168 172 174.
Pure Soul Court training
Byakuya supervises Sasuke’s purification, teaches him Kidō, and gives him information about the Uchiha’s origins and the Sharingan’s costs. Learning that he is Indra’s reincarnation intensifies his rejection of inherited fate. He chooses to pursue soul-based power alongside his eyes, awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan and then Ame no Habakiri 188 197 200 207.
The Court’s apparent alternative to Ryūha is itself compromised: Aizen is an alternate identity and clone created by Ryūha to guide Sasuke. Ryūha describes Sasuke and Naruto as potential safeguards against the Ōtsutsuki while arranging their growth through concealed interventions 188 203 219.
Itachi’s death and inherited power
After learning that Itachi remains alive in terrible condition, Sasuke tries to take him away. Itachi refuses, explaining that his altered body and Ryūha’s mark make escape dangerous. He asks Sasuke to kill him while he remains lucid. Sasuke ultimately does so and tells Minato that his brother chose death rather than becoming a monster 214 222 223 226 227.
Minato permits Sasuke to resume training and gives him Itachi’s cleaned forehead protector. Under Aizen, Sasuke begins synchronizing his eyes and Zanpakuto, accepts Itachi’s eye transplant, and awakens the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Aizen then brings him to Madara, who challenges him to prove his independence before receiving further instruction 227 230 234 235.
Ōtsutsuki war
Sasuke and Naruto infiltrate the God Tree’s root system on a sabotage mission, but Urashiki intercepts them. Their complementary abilities let them break spatial-temporal prisons and repeatedly wound him. When the revived God Tree attacks the army, they cut back its roots and cover the Allied Forces’ retreat 237 240 246 247 248.
The pair later attempt to destroy the core with a Taiji Rasengan while Ryūha occupies Isshiki. The crystal restores itself and releases Isshiki’s true body instead. Overuse of Sasuke’s eyes and Hōgyoku power damages his optic nerves, requiring temporary avoidance of ocular techniques 242 250.
Continuing pursuit of strength
Back in Konoha, Sasuke remains dissatisfied with his inability to match Isshiki or Ryūha. Naruto offers friendship, while Jiraiya helps him acknowledge fear and regain focus without surrendering entirely to hatred 253 254.
Sasuke later prevents Shennong’s escape by cutting through a space-time distortion. He announces that he is returning to Las Noches and will come home once he is strong enough 258.
Appearance
Sasuke has black hair and naturally black eyes. His altered power introduces visible changes around his left eye and produces more extensive transformations when strongly activated 149 151 163 240.
- Hair: Tousled black hair, often hanging over his eyes; turns silver-white during yin–Hōgyoku resonance 163 240.
- Left-eye covering: Wears bandages over the affected eye during Team Seven’s escort mission 166 168.
- Bone-mask fragment: A pale, rough-edged plate extends from beneath his left eye toward his cheekbone, with dark-purple patterns across it 150.
- Unstable power markings: Purple markings spread around the eye, temple, and cheek during an outburst 165.
- Training attire: At the Pure Soul Court, wears a white robe bearing a silver emblem of a blade wrapped in chains 188.
- Eternal Mangekyō pattern: A rotating hexagram with a tomoe at each of its six points 234.
- Resonance form: Black markings spread across his skin as his yin power synchronizes with the Hōgyoku fragments 240.
Personality
The destruction of his family leaves Sasuke cold, isolated, and intensely wary. He rejects pity and often answers teammates with silence or curt remarks. He prefers the Pure Soul Court’s treatment of him as a trainee rather than as an object of sympathy 163 188 253.
Revenge supplies his clearest purpose. He repeatedly admits that he has no settled answer for what comes after killing Ryūha, yet accepts painful training, dangerous transformations, and even acknowledged exploitation to gain strength quickly. His desire for freedom conflicts with his dependence on the very powers and institutions Ryūha has provided 188 214 242 255.
His guarded behavior does not eliminate attachment. He tries desperately to save Itachi, recognizes Naruto as a friend and rival, and is moved by Minato’s and Kakashi’s assurances that he still belongs to Konoha. Jiraiya’s advice about fear, love, and supportive bonds helps him recover clarity during sword practice 200 223 227 242 254.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan
Sasuke uses his eyes for combat perception, genjutsu, and eventually observation of temporal and causal structures 167 168 234.
- Reads and evades coordinated sword attacks; uses Sharingan genjutsu to question a captured Jonin 167 168.
- Can perceive movements that his body is still too slow to answer, as demonstrated against Byakuya 203.
- The Eternal Mangekyō lets him observe time’s flow and causal threads, supporting Ame no Habakiri’s advanced techniques 234 247.
- Even after the eye transplant, overuse combined with Hōgyoku power can injure his optic nerves 242.
Amaterasu and Kagutsuchi
His left eye produces Amaterasu’s black flames; his right eye uses Kagutsuchi to reshape them 203.
- Forms a black-flame sword and coats Ame no Habakiri in Amaterasu 203 239.
- Destroys Urashiki’s fishing rod with the flame-coated blade 239.
- Byakuya disperses the flames and breaks the shaped sword, demonstrating that superior force can overcome these attacks 203.
Susanoo
Sasuke manifests a purple skeletal Susanoo for protection 238.
- Cushions the impact of a hundred-meter fall 238.
- Consumes a considerable amount of chakra even in this defensive application 238.
Hōgyoku Seed and Hollowfication
The implanted Seed converts hatred, pain, and despair into growth, but initially destabilizes Sasuke’s body and mind 150 151.
- Produces purple-black chakra mixed with violent reiatsu, bone growth, and destructive urges 150 151.
- Can erupt in response to traumatic reminders; one outburst cracks the surrounding ground 165.
- Is gradually suppressed through purification and training, then begins fusing with his soul during Aizen’s advanced test 188 230.
- Ryūha can calm the power through reiatsu, including remotely through a clone 151 165.
Kidō
Sasuke learns to use reiatsu through focused will rather than ninjutsu’s physical guidance of chakra 197.
- Successfully casts a weak Hadō #1: Shō without an incantation 197.
- Byakuya sets mastery of Hadō #33: Sōkatsui as a condition for further forbidden-technique instruction; completion is not documented in the supplied passages 188.
Ame no Habakiri
Sasuke’s Zanpakuto embodies severance, extending beyond physical objects to connections such as space, time, causality, and destiny. Greater severance carries greater cost and risk 207 214.
- Basic severance: Cuts the causal link between Byakuya’s sword and its intended hit, briefly cracking Senbonzakura. This consumes about 30% of Sasuke’s reiatsu 207.
- Dankū: Severs space, creates spatial rifts, and can trap opponents within them 233.
- Dangai: Targets time and causality. Aizen describes momentary nonexistence and numerous attacks within an instant as theoretical applications; Sasuke’s first small-scale test nearly exhausts him 234.
- Bankai — Dankū: Dangai: Cuts through Urashiki’s Temporal-Spatial Prison 240.
- Time-freeze escape: Severs causality to free himself while using the Eternal Mangekyō to perceive temporal flow 247.
- Space-time interception: Cuts Shennong’s escape distortion, enabling his capture 258.
- Limits: Powers he cannot understand can defeat his severance. His spirit warns that cutting deeply rooted connections—especially his bond with Ryūha—may cause dangerous backlash 214 230.
Yin-Yang Release Cooperation
Sasuke combines his yin power and Hōgyoku resonance with Naruto’s yang power and Nine-Tails chakra 240.
- Their opposing energies form a taiji symbol and produce Yin-Yang Release: Taiji Rasengan 240.
- They use the technique against the God Tree’s core, but the apparent damage does not prevent its restoration or Isshiki’s revival 250.
Shinobi Fieldcraft and Swordsmanship
Sasuke combines alert observation, conventional ninja tools, and progressively refined swordplay 163 168 253.
- Quietly checks shadows, bushes, rocks, terrain, and high ground for threats 163 166.
- Uses kunai and triangular shuriken placement to defeat or pursue rogue ninja 168.
- Identifies the regenerating fishing line’s chakra source as the necessary target rather than continuing ineffective cuts 238 239.
- Trains under Byakuya and Aizen, though emotional disturbance can impair otherwise fast, precise sword practice 203 233 253 254.
