Background / History
Jiraiya trained under the Third, Sarutobi Hiruzen. During the Second Shinobi World War, he fought alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru; their battlefield achievements earned them the title of Sannin from Hanzō of the Salamander. After Orochimaru’s downfall and Tsunade’s departure, Jiraiya spent years wandering the shinobi world 259.
At Mount Myōboku, the Great Toad Sage foretold that Jiraiya would teach a disciple who would either save the shinobi world or destroy it. Jiraiya initially believed this disciple was Nagato, then Minato, before identifying Naruto as the Child of Prophecy 243.
His experiences left him with lasting regrets, including his failure to prevent Orochimaru’s departure or protect Tsunade’s younger brother and lover. He also recalls hating Hanzō for killing his teammates and students, and the Akatsuki for exploiting Nagato. His bonds with Minato, Naruto, and others helped him place love and trust above hatred 254 259.
Appearance
- White hair — explicitly described during Liuyu’s attack on the Five Kage Summit 129.
- Travel clothing — wears a red outer coat and wooden sandals, carrying an enormous pack when departing with Naruto 257.
- Sage Mode markings — glow while he gathers senjutsu chakra and dim when his strength falters 128 129.
- Battle injuries — after Liuyu’s assault, he is described as having only his right eye remaining; during the later Ōtsutsuki campaign, his chest is wrapped in bandages 131 243.
- Cigarettes — frequently seen smoking while observing training, discussing missions, or traveling 254 256 257 266.
Personality
Jiraiya combines playful teasing and boastfulness with blunt, protective instruction. He jokes about his past hardships, keeps Naruto guessing about their destination, and confidently calls protecting him “a piece of cake.” On missions, however, he insists on patience, reconnaissance, and recognizing one’s limits rather than relying on enthusiasm or luck 256 257 259.
His courage is rooted in responsibility rather than an absence of fear. He accepts potentially fatal risks to protect younger fighters and nearby civilians, but also orders retreats when his forces cannot contain a threat. He is particularly unwilling to let Naruto become merely a weapon, demanding that Minato protect the boy even when the world needs his power 129 208 209 217.
As a mentor, Jiraiya teaches that fear must be accepted rather than eliminated, hatred must not consume a person’s life, and regret should become a lesson rather than a barrier. He remains optimistic about both Naruto’s future and Sasuke’s ability to find his own path 254 258 259 261.
Abilities & Skills
Senjutsu and Sage Mode
- Enters Sage Mode with Fukasaku and Shima supporting him from his shoulders 128.
- Uses Hair Needle Senbon infused with senjutsu chakra to crack Liuyu’s Dankū barrier, demonstrating that natural energy can erode reiatsu to some extent. Liuyu repairs the barrier before the attack reaches him 128.
- Senjutsu preserves a final thread of his life after Liuyu’s devastating assault 131.
- Guides Naruto’s training at Mount Myōboku and arranges further instruction at Ryūchi Cave to broaden his understanding of natural energy 226 259 260.
Rasengan
- Uses Sage Art: Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan. His desperate attack against Liuyu exceeds five meters in diameter and consumes his life force, but Liuyu crushes it with one hand 129.
- Advises Naruto to concentrate yang power in the Rasengan’s core rather than allowing it to scatter 243.
- Promises to teach Naruto the Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan before the Allied Forces’ offensive 244.
- Counters Naruto’s later Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan with a blue Rasengan of his own; both techniques dissipate after a brief clash 266.
Toad Summoning and Combination Attacks
- Summons Gamabunta, his signature giant toad 209.
- Combines Gamabunta’s oil with Fire Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet—Modified, burning more than a hundred assimilated puppets in one attack 209.
- Uses Gamabunta’s size and strength to break through puppet formations and reach their source 209.
- Deploys Gamabunta in a coordinated assault on Kinshiki, although the Ōtsutsuki’s Chakra Armor blocks the attack 238.
Toad Confrontation Chant
- Coordinates with Fukasaku and Shima to use Mount Myōboku’s strongest genjutsu, a sound-based technique capable of ensnaring Super Kage-level opponents 128 129.
- The chant affects the other fighters in the summit hall but fails against Liuyu, whose reiatsu shock wave shatters it and injures both Toad Sages 128 129.
Sealing Techniques
- Uses Modified Four Symbols Seal against an Ōtsutsuki bud, but its dark-red energy rapidly corrodes the formula 208.
- Attempts Four Symbols Seal—Double Seal, which he identifies as his strongest sealing jutsu, to reinforce the bud’s existing seal. His chakra-based formulas fail against the reiatsu-based seal 209.
- Contains a dangerous crystal holding Isshiki’s consciousness within multiple layers of seals 213 216.
- Prepares a chakra-suppressing tag using the Sage of Six Paths’ yang power. Minato applies it to Momoshiki, and the tag strengthens its suppression when Momoshiki tries to absorb it 239.
Investigation and Instruction
- Recognizes a Sky operative, covertly follows him, and overhears the location and timing of Shennong’s meeting 257.
- Identifies the Hell Butterfly mark on an Ōtsutsuki bud as Uchiha Ryūha’s seal and preserves Isshiki’s remnant for investigation 209 213.
- Detects the mental distraction disrupting Sasuke’s swordsmanship and helps him regain focus 254.
- Teaches Naruto to protect himself and his comrades, study enemy movement patterns, and use the Rasengan flexibly rather than simply charging forward 257 260 266.
Equipment / Items
- Sealing scroll — carries the dark-red crystal containing remnants of Isshiki’s Karma, later presenting it as evidence at the summit 213 216.
- Specially prepared sealing tag — supplied for Minato’s attack on Momoshiki; temporarily suppresses the target’s chakra 239.
- Travel pack — carries a large pack when setting out with Naruto 257.
Relationships

- Namikaze Minato — Former student and Hokage. Minato repeatedly protects Jiraiya in battle and entrusts him with sensitive investigations and Naruto’s training 129 137 209 256.
- Sarutobi Hiruzen — Former teacher. Hiruzen sends him to consult the Great Toad Sage about finding someone capable of stopping Ryūha 122 259.
- Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and longtime companion. She opposes his dangerous confrontation with Ryūha and later considers risking her own life to save him from soul-corroding injuries 122 135 259.
- Orochimaru — Former comrade whose departure remains one of Jiraiya’s regrets. Minato later asks Jiraiya to retrieve him for his research expertise despite his service under Las Noches 198 259.
- Nagato — Former student and an earlier candidate for the Child of Prophecy. Jiraiya resents the Akatsuki’s exploitation of him 243 254.
- Gamabunta — Signature summon and trusted friend. Gamabunta agrees to accompany him into the puppet-producing hollow even at the risk of dying together 209.
- Fukasaku and Shima — Toad Sages who support his Sage Mode and genjutsu, then help guide Naruto’s senjutsu training 128 129 226.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Receives Jiraiya’s advice on fear, hatred, and the danger of making revenge his entire purpose 254.
- Uchiha Ryūha / Liuyu — Initially an existential enemy who nearly kills him. Jiraiya later works within an alliance that accepts Las Noches’ assistance against the Ōtsutsuki 122 129 135 243.
