Background / History

Origin and the Pantheon

Vanidak gathered the power of the starfield that gave birth to him and manifested a pair of silver vambraces containing concealed blades, which he believed had originated from a dream. He later traveled with Aman'Thul and Eonar while seeking and awakening other Titans. 3 5

His early travels brought him into repeated contact with Void entities. He drove a Void Lord's avatar back through a spatial rift with F2A, later defeated another Void Lord and absorbed its soul. Vanidak treats Void power as a useful force rather than an allegiance, arguing that power itself is neither good nor evil. 13 21 61

A portion of Aman'Thul's power granted him glimpses of possible futures. These visions led Vanidak to give Sargeras the star map to Mardum, then later condemn him for what he did there. Their conflict escalated into a direct battle, and Vanidak survived Sargeras's Fel flame storm despite the Pantheon disappearing from Nilan. 57 63

First Azeroth Sojourn

Vanidak arrived on Azeroth in a severely weakened body, unable even to lift a rock and vulnerable to creatures that would normally pose no threat to a Titan. Elune later bound him after he attacked Lunara, and the Night Elves imprisoned him at the Temple of Elune. 75 78 86 90

Operating under the name Hyde, he entered Nar'thalas Academy and passed its Arcane, Fire, and Frost trials with ease. He befriended Dath'Remar Sunstrider, infiltrated Suramar through changing disguises, and eventually disclosed his Titan identity and knowledge of Azeroth's creation to Elisande. 101 104 108 136 137

War of the Ancients

As Sargeras's arrival threatened Azeroth, the Titans resolved to create a mortal avatar for Vanidak. He retrieved his body from the Well of Eternity, investigated the Legion's portal in Zin-Azshari, and was trapped when Sargeras collapsed a tower into the Well. 232 275 276

Vanidak returned to coordinate the defense, ordering Malfurion and Krasus to close the portal at the proper moment. Mortally wounded, he used a bronze box and a multicolored bead in a plan to strike the Demon Soul, transforming and launching himself toward the artifact with Malygos's aid. 283 285

His body finally collapsed during his battle with Sargeras in the Astral Realm, leaving only his Titan soul. After the Well of Eternity exploded and Azeroth's World Soul was corrupted, the Pantheon imprisoned Sargeras; Aman'Thul then sent Vanidak back to Azeroth in a mortal body to guard the world until its World Soul awakens. 287

Watchers and Later Campaigns

Vanidak established the Watchers and made Booty Bay their long-term base. He recruited and altered Altair's soul to free him from his Worgen appearance, trained Cassandra through repeated soul trials, and used the organization to explore Azeroth and respond to supernatural threats. 332 333 339 386

As Sir Hydewei, he maintained a castle and concealed observatory in Dalaran. He intervened when Kathra'natir threatened the city, captured the Dreadlord's soul after Alodi subdued him, and intended to destroy it. 356 357

He continued investigating the vanished Titan Keepers through Norgannon's Disk and Archaedas's memories. His later actions included confronting N'Zoth in Ny'alotha, killing Al'Akir, and leading battles against C'Thun's servants in Ahn'Qiraj. 433 519 551 569

Vanidak's appearance changes with his available body and power. He can operate in a mortal-sized form, assume a shadow-cloaked humanoid guise, or manifest as a colossal Titan whose body shimmers with silver-white light. 127 519 544

Personality

Vanidak is irreverent, impulsive, and relentlessly mischievous. Aman'Thul considers him to have a “rotten personality,” Eonar regards him as punchable, and Norgannon frequently turns his pranks back against him. 17

His humor often masks careful observation and tactical thought. He questioned the reliability of Sargeras's intelligence on the Void Lords, quickly deduced Algalon's nature as a Constellar, and treats unfamiliar situations as puzzles to be solved. 22 31

In battle, Vanidak is smug, ruthless, and intensely hostile toward betrayal. He takes particular offense at ambushes, uses deception and stealth without hesitation, and can be merciless toward demons, Old God servants, and other enemies. 33 357 569

Despite this, he repeatedly accepts responsibility for Azeroth and those under his command. He protected Altair from his soul corruption, ordered Helya to defend the Shadowlands against Sargeras's army, and risked his existence to prevent Sargeras from entering Azeroth. 188 285 333
