Background / History
Sargeras awakened from within a planet after Vanidak called to him and disturbed his slumber. He emerged as a Titan wielding a massive blue sword, identified himself as the “guardian of the stars,” and immediately accepted Vanidak as his brother. He also retained a hostile memory of an unidentified being that had seemingly attacked him before his awakening. 16
While searching for their kin with Vanidak, Sargeras was forced into the Void Arena aboard the Lucky Toe. He defeated a swarm of Void Eels, the Doom Blademaster, and the reigning Felguard champion Satok, becoming the arena's new champion. His victory led the Ethereal Prince to recruit him as captain of the prince's guard—an offer Sargeras accepted on Vanidak's instruction. 18 19
The supposed promotion was a trap. A Void Lord attempted to make Sargeras into a Void weapon, imprisoning and exhausting him. He resisted until Vanidak intervened, freeing him and joining the battle against the Void Lord. 19 20 21
Sargeras and Vanidak later reached the Pantheon, where Sargeras reunited with the other Titans. He became the Pantheon's guardian and one of its principal warriors. 22 25
Demon Campaign and Mardum
When demons began destroying worlds shaped by the Pantheon, Sargeras volunteered to lead their extermination. He considered demons a direct threat to cosmic order and swore not to rest until demonic power had been purged from the universe. 25 26
Aggramar eventually joined his campaign and became Sargeras's closest battlefield companion. Together they discovered that demons slain in the material universe could return by remaking their bodies in the Twisting Nether. 27 28
Using a star system reached through Vanidak's spatial device, Sargeras and Aggramar transformed an unstable rift-linked region into Mardum, the Exile Plane. The prison was designed to contain demons near the Twisting Nether and prevent their endless invasions. 28 29
Break with the Pantheon
Sargeras discovered a World Soul corrupted by Old Gods and learned from captured Nathrezim that the Void Lords sought to create corrupted Titans as weapons. Unable to find a way to save the unborn Titan before it awakened, he destroyed the world and its nascent Titan soul. 30 31
He returned to the Pantheon with a proposal to cleanse the cosmos before more World Souls could be corrupted. The other Titans rejected his plan, condemning the destruction of all life as unacceptable. Feeling betrayed and convinced that his kin would not act, Sargeras left the Pantheon to pursue his own solution. 31
Fall and the Burning Legion
Concluding that the universe itself had become irredeemably corrupted, Sargeras resolved to “purify” all creation with fire. He broke open Mardum, releasing its imprisoned demons and shattering the boundary between the Dark Void and the Twisting Nether. 47 48
The Fel eruption transformed him: his Arcane-filled eyes became emerald flames, his Titan body split with burning fissures, and Gorribar broke rather than remain in his service. Sargeras reforged the weapon's blade fragment into Gorribal and offered the freed demons pure Fel power, demanding their absolute obedience. Those who submitted became the Burning Legion. 47 48
War Against the Pantheon
Aggramar confronted Sargeras after learning that the Burning Legion was led by his former mentor. Fel magic gave Sargeras a decisive advantage, allowing him to overpower Aggramar despite the latter's resistance. 49 50
At Nilan, Sargeras rejected Aman'Thul's attempt at reconciliation and killed Aggramar when his former companion tried to reason with him. He extracted and imprisoned Aggramar's World Soul, triggering open war between the Burning Legion and the Pantheon. 54
During the battle, Sargeras used Fel's destructive effect on Titan bodies to wound Aman'Thul and counter Norgannon's Arcane magic. Vanidak later inflicted devastating wounds on Sargeras with Slaughter Feast, but Sargeras used a Fel storm generated from Aggramar's body to restore himself and turn the battle. 56 60 61 62
Though he proclaimed victory over the Pantheon, Sargeras emerged from Nilan severely damaged by Vanidak's final attack. He restored missing physical portions by draining Fel and life force from demons, but retained lasting injuries to both body and soul. 64
Argus and the Eredar
While recovering, Sargeras sought an intelligent race capable of directing the Burning Legion in his absence. Nathrezim intelligence led him to Argus and the Eredar. 64
He first contacted Kil'jaeden through an Astral Realm projection, encouraging the Eredar leader's hunger for knowledge and exploration. Sargeras then appeared before Argus, shared knowledge with the Eredar, and invited them to join his crusade to cleanse the universe. Kil'jaeden and Archimonde accepted eagerly, while Velen agreed publicly but arranged an escape for those who would refuse the Legion. 68 70 71
War of the Ancients
Sargeras sought to enter Azeroth through the Well of Eternity, using the Burning Legion's forces, Queen Azshara's Highborne, and the Demon Soul to stabilize a passage. Xavius served him until the former Highborne leader was killed during the conflict. 224 225 226 275
Vanidak confronted Sargeras at Zin-Azshari and used the Demon Soul to oppose him. During their final clash, Vanidak attempted to banish Sargeras through the portal; Sargeras resisted, and both fell into it. Sargeras's hand later reached back through the still-open portal, killing Broxigar when the orc attempted to stop it. 285 286
Appearance
Sargeras's appearance changes radically after his exposure to Fel magic.
- Awakened Titan form — Bronze skin, long black hair, blue rune-covered plate armor, and a massive blue greatsword. 16
- True Titan scale — His original body is described as immense enough to rival a planet. 19
- Fallen form — Emerald fire burns in place of his former Arcane-filled eyes; his skin is split by magma-like fissures and Fel flames. 47
- Demonic traits — Possesses large demonic wings and horns; Vanidak later severs one horn and shreds his wings during their battle. 61
- Argus projection — Appears as a colossal, starlit figure whose radiance outshines the daylight over Argus. 70
Personality
Before his fall, Sargeras is patient, direct, and strongly protective of order. He tolerates Vanidak's erratic behavior, treats battle seriously, and inspires Aggramar when their campaign against the demons appears hopeless. 17 22 28
His encounters with the Void and the corrupted World Soul turn caution into fear, then fear into absolute conviction. The death of the unborn Titan leaves him grief-stricken and increasingly unable to accept uncertainty or alternative solutions. 30 31
As the Fallen Titan, Sargeras becomes ruthless, proud, and obsessed with betrayal. He interprets the Pantheon's rejection, Gorribar's destruction, and Vanidak's opposition as personal betrayals, while continuing to view universal destruction as necessary salvation. 47 50 53
