Background / History

The Ley Line originated after Aman’Thul tore Y’Shaarj from Azeroth. The Old God’s deeply rooted tentacles left a massive planetary wound, releasing the newborn Titan’s life source as vast, unstable arcane energy. After imprisoning the remaining Old Gods, the Titans and their creations stabilized the wound into the Well of Eternity. The energy spreading across the world also stabilized, forming the earliest Ley Line 24.

Malygos’s coronation as the Dragon Aspect of Magic and the later explosion of the Well of Eternity contributed to the network’s increasing stability and consolidation 24.

Structure and Locations

  • Veins: Channels beneath Azeroth’s crust carry immense quantities of arcane energy 24.
  • Hubs: Intersections of these veins concentrate magical power. More intersecting veins produce a more powerful hub 24.
  • Quel’Thalas temple nodes: Arcanists established these to divert excess energy from the Sunwell’s hub and support the kingdom’s protective barrier, Ban’dinoriel 24.
Location Significance
Silvermoon City Built on a magical nexus occupying an ancestral Amani site; this territorial conflict underlies the elves’ war with the forest trolls 6.
Isle of Quel’Danas / Sunwell A major hub further strengthened by the Sunwell, producing substantial excess mana despite the Quel’dorei’s consumption 24.
Western Temple An isolated diversion node near Sunsail Harbor, chronically troubled by overloaded conversion equipment and arcane overflow 24.
Eastern and Northern Temples Other major temples involved in the Conduit Crystal crisis; their Wardens are Landra Sunstrider and Kaidenis, respectively 33 36.
Dalaran One of the magical locations Lanlos sees while his perception travels through the network 32.
Coldarra A northern hub whose power exceeds the other hubs Lanlos observes during his vision; inhabited by blue dragons 32.

Functions

Mana Regulation

  • Makes Azeroth’s mana stable and docile, unlike the turbulent mana of the Twisting Nether and Astral Realm 20.
  • Restricts how much natural mana an individual can seize through willpower alone 20.
  • Concentrates energy at hubs, leaving ambient mana relatively thin. This prevents Lanlos from continuously powering the Sargerite Keystone through ordinary environmental absorption 20.

Energy Distribution

  • Quel’Thalas’s temples divert the Sunwell’s excess power and expand Ban’dinoriel’s coverage 24.
  • Silvermoon City can shut down the temples when it needs their energy, causing mana to reconverge on the capital 24.
  • Conversion Crystals collect and release energy. Their Conduit Crystals serve as input ports connecting them to local Ley Line nodes 24 31.
  • Without a Conduit Crystal, a Conversion Crystal cannot channel the node’s mana. Western Temple personnel temporarily substitute for the missing component to maintain supply 24.

Direct Ley Line Connection

An Arcane Aberration possessing a Conduit Crystal receives a near-infinite mana supply. The Keystone records the following effects for its active Ley Line Connection 30 31:

Property Effect
Spell and spell-like ability costs No cost 30
Casting time Halved 30
Spell effects Increased by 50% 30
Cooldowns Reduced by 80% 30
Spell vulnerability Increased by 200% 30
  • The supplied mana makes the aberration’s Mana Shield effectively impossible for Lanlos to overwhelm with his available spells 31.
  • Lanlos exploits its increased spell vulnerability by delivering Shocking Grasp through the Windrunner Blade, striking inside the shield 31.

Vulnerabilities

  • Equipment overload: Western Temple conversion devices malfunction roughly every half-month. Overflow creates Arcane Aberrations and can corrupt nearby beasts into attacking elves 24.
  • Unauthorized access: A displaced Conduit Crystal can continuously feed an elemental creature, allowing it to become increasingly dangerous 25 31.
  • Communication disruption: Disturbed nodes prevent long-range Wind Message spells from transmitting reliably 36 40.
  • Fel corruption: Demons can corrupt or destroy the network’s stabilizing systems to undermine world order and facilitate invasion 20.
  • Flow manipulation: Kergash uses fel energy to redirect the temples’ mana toward the Western Temple, powering a demonic gateway 44.

Story Role / Major Events

Event Chapter Outcome
Western Temple malfunction 24 25 Damaged Conversion Crystals and a missing Conduit Crystal prompt an academy expedition to clear aberrations and recover the component.
Conduit-powered aberration 30 31 Lanlos and Vereesa confront an elemental drawing directly from the network; Lanlos defeats it despite its sustained Mana Shield.
Network vision 32 Contact with the recovered crystal sends Lanlos’s perception through Azeroth’s hubs. The resulting disturbance awakens Malygos.
Corrupted crystal delivery 33 34 36 Velania sends Lanlos to the Eastern Temple with a crystal that erupts in fel energy. He is accused of tampering with it and identifies Velania as the principal suspect.
Temple energy redirected 43 44 Kergash’s interference draws the network’s flow toward the Western Temple, where Velania welcomes Sathael through a forming gateway.
Gateway collapse 45 The energy vortex dissipates and the portal to the Shattered Abyss collapses. After the Keystone absorbs the fel energy, the connected Conduit Crystal retains accessible, stable arcane power.
