Jiang Nannan was raised by her mother after her father died during a soul hunt. Her parents were commoner Soul Masters who could not afford a professional hunting team. During Mother Jiang’s breakthrough to Soul Elder, Father Jiang was killed, while Mother Jiang survived absorbing a ring beyond her limit at the cost of lasting meridian damage and permanently stalled cultivation 13 24.

Her mother’s health deteriorated sharply two years before Nannan’s first soul hunt. Nannan worked odd jobs to support the household and cultivated intensely, hoping that becoming a Soul Master would let her afford better treatment. This left her little time for friendships, even among her academy classmates 13 38.

Her fear does not prevent her from helping others. During the zombie attack, she returns with the other children to check on the guards who stayed behind to protect them. She subsequently gives water to the injured squad leader and helps care for the exhausted Fang Le 14 15 16.

After Mi Long attacks her mother, Nannan does not blame Fang Le for drawing the conflict to their home. She directs her anger toward the Mi brothers, the world’s predatory power structure, and her own inability to protect her family. She wants both the strength to defend her mother and a way to change that world 25.

Her more playful side emerges once she begins to hope for a cure. She proudly praises her mother’s cooking, enthusiastically introduces her new companions, and enjoys the group’s journey rather than focusing solely on work and cultivation 23 24 38.
