Background / History
Xuan Zi is a rank 98 Shrek Academy elder, second only to his martial uncle Mu En in status. His cultivation has stagnated at rank 98: he is described as having become overly aligned with his Godly Taotie Bull martial soul and gradually assimilated by it, losing his original nature in the process 22.
Before the Lingdou City incident, Xuan Zi encountered Di Tian in the Star Dou Forest and learned firsthand that the Beast God could not be defeated without divine power. This experience left him deeply wary of Di Tian, despite his attempts to frame that fear as respect 27.
Appearance
Xuan Zi is an elderly man with an unrestrained, slovenly appearance, usually carrying a wine gourd 27.
- Wears a simple, dusty gray robe 27.
- Has messy hair, with wine stains and grease on his chest and cuffs 27.
- Carries a wine gourd 27.
- His eyes remain clear and childlike rather than clouded by age 27.
- Often eats chicken legs to settle his restless mood 27 33.
Personality
Xuan Zi is ordinarily arrogant, haughty, lawless, and highly proud of Shrek Academy's prestige. His students are stunned when he abandons this demeanor and apologizes deferentially to Di Tian, revealing that he recognizes overwhelming power when confronted with it 27.
He is protective of Shrek's younger generation and takes pride in their talent, but his judgment is self-serving and inconsistent. During the confrontation with Di Tian, he internally considers preserving himself more worthwhile than protecting the students; later, after they are only knocked unconscious, he blames their weakness rather than acknowledging his own panic 27 37.
Xuan Zi is also opportunistic. After witnessing Fang Le's abilities, Twin Martial Souls, and two domains, he begins fantasizing about recruiting him into Shrek and acquiring access to the benefits of Fang Le's connection with the Star Dou Forest 33 37.
Abilities & Skills
Godly Taotie Bull Martial Soul
Xuan Zi possesses the Godly Taotie Bull martial soul, which he can use through Martial Soul Possession 22 28.
- His martial soul has dragon-lineage blood, making it especially vulnerable to the suppressive effect of Di Tian's Dragon God Claw 28.
- The martial soul's influence is stated to have contributed to Xuan Zi losing his original nature 22.
Rank 98 Title Douluo
Xuan Zi is a rank 98 Title Douluo and one of Shrek Academy's foremost combatants 26 27.
- Possesses nine soul rings: two yellow, two purple, four black, and one red 28.
- Has rank 98 spiritual power, sufficient to determine that Zhang Lexuan and the other Shrek students survived Fang Le's attack 37.
- Fang Le and the Warden's domains reduce him from level 98 to level 79 during testing 36.
Spiritual Perception
After the Warden's domain deprives him of sight and hearing, Xuan Zi uses spiritual power to perceive his surroundings 35.
- Spiritual power can compensate for the loss of ordinary senses 35.
- His perception allows him to observe the unconscious Shrek students after the battle 37.
Relationships
- Di Tian — Overwhelmingly stronger adversary. Xuan Zi fears and defers to the Beast God, is repeatedly beaten by him, and is warned not to covet Fang Le 27 28 37.
- Fang Le — A human prodigy Xuan Zi hopes to recruit into Shrek after witnessing his combat power, Twin Martial Souls, and twin domains 33 37.
- Mu En — Xuan Zi's martial uncle. Xuan Zi invokes Mu En's “Dragon God Douluo” title in an attempt to deter Di Tian and later agrees to have him clarify the title's misuse 28 32.
- Zhang Lexuan and the Shrek group — Shrek students under his protection during the Lingdou City conflict. Xuan Zi praises their resolve but fails to intervene effectively against Di Tian and Fang Le 27 34 37.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Lingdou City and Di Tian's Arrival
Xuan Zi follows Zhang Lexuan's group after they investigate Fang Le and Di Tian. He is forced out of hiding when Di Tian calls him out, then immediately apologizes for the Shrek students' conduct after recognizing the Beast God's presence 27.
Conflict over the “Dragon God” Title
When Di Tian threatens him, Xuan Zi invokes Mu En, the “Dragon God Douluo,” and Shrek's backing. Di Tian responds with Dragon God Claw, exploiting the dragon-lineage suppression on Xuan Zi's Godly Taotie Bull and severely injuring him 28.
Xuan Zi eventually promises that Mu En will clarify the improper use of the “Dragon God” title, prioritizing divine reputation over Shrek's public image 32.
Shrek's Battle with Fang Le
While Di Tian restrains him, Xuan Zi watches Fang Le fight six Shrek students. He is astonished by Fang Le's physical strength, Twin Martial Souls, and domains, and begins considering Fang Le an ideal Shrek recruit 33 35.
When the Warden's domain incapacitates the students, Xuan Zi panics and believes they may have died. Di Tian later reveals that Xuan Zi should have been able to sense that they were merely unconscious 35 37.
Attempt to Recruit Fang Le
After Fang Le's group departs, Xuan Zi fixates on recruiting Fang Le to Shrek, imagining the value of the youth's talent and ties to the Star Dou Forest. Di Tian detects his intentions, beats him again, and threatens a beast tide against Shrek should he continue pursuing Fang Le 37.
