Background / History
Qin Yuan serves as a Second-Class Demon-Seeking Captain in the Qinghe Prefecture Demon Slayer Bureau, assigned to the Second Battalion under First-Class Demon-Seeking Captain Han Tieyi. During the Bureau’s recruitment, Fan Duan introduces him alongside Li Xiulian as one of its team leaders. Qin Yuan receives Mu Yang and Ma Xuan as new subordinates and introduces them to the rest of the team. At the time, he is at the peak of the Condensing Qi Realm and specializes in blade techniques and frontal assaults. 62
His team investigates incidents at Wu Family Village, where informant Yue Miao faces open hostility from her husband, Wu You. Qin Yuan intervenes to ensure Yue Miao stays near the team for protection, then convenes the group to assess the village’s suspicious circumstances. 66
When inconsistencies emerge in Yue Miao’s testimony, Qin Yuan rejects Mu Yang’s proposal to immediately arrest all suspects without evidence, citing procedure and the Bureau’s reputation. Instead, he divides the team: Mu Yang, Lei Sai, and Zhou Yao investigate Yue Miao and the suspicious Physician Wu Yang, while Qin Yuan takes Ma Xuan to monitor Wu Dehou. 67 68
During the ensuing crisis, Qin Yuan and Ma Xuan track Wu Dehou to the village ancestral hall and learn that Wu Family Village had worshipped the Spider Demon Zhimeng for generations. Qin Yuan is caught in Zhimeng’s web and struck by her soul attack, but Ma Xuan intervenes before the demon can finish him. 70 71
Following Mu Yang’s slaying of the fourth-tier Spider Demon Zhimeng, Qin Yuan explains the significance of Blessed Land quotas and the competition surrounding access to such sites. He later leads the team back to Qinghe Prefecture after emphasizing that demon slayers must remain vigilant despite rare exceptions among monsters. 73 74
Qin Yuan accompanies Mu Yang to the Internal Affairs Hall to submit the Wu Family Village mission report and helps guide him through his promotion to Third-Class Demon-Seeking Captain. 75 He continues advising Mu Yang afterward, including on the possibility of undertaking missions independently. 76
During the Linhe Village mission, Qin Yuan’s team eliminates a Toad Demon before a suspicious arson attack draws them toward the river. After identifying the fire as deliberate and detecting demonic energy with the Demon-Seeking Compass, Qin Yuan leaves Ma Xuan behind to protect the villagers and leads Lei Sai and Zhou Yao in pursuit. At the riverbank, a fifth-tier Catfish Minion gravely injures him with a water-column ambush, forcing Qin Yuan to order an immediate retreat before Mu Yang arrives to confront the enemy. 107 108 109
After the Linhe Village events, Qin Yuan prioritizes the team’s survival when Bao Tian and the Pingwei Escort Agency ambush them on the return journey. Although Mu Yang defeats Bao Tian, Qin Yuan leads the team in reporting the Catfish Minion, Fan Lang, and the related demon-collusion case to Elder Liang. 115 117
By the time Mu Yang reaches First-Class Demon-Seeking Captain, he has surpassed Qin Yuan in rank. Qin Yuan is privately stunned by the speed of Mu Yang’s rise, particularly because Mu Yang had joined the Bureau on the same day as Ma Xuan. 126
Qin Yuan remains a trusted senior and companion to his former subordinates. Before the Blessed Land Grand Selection, he gathers with Mu Yang, Lei Sai, Zhou Yao, and Ma Xuan, briefing Mu Yang on the participating factions and their notable martial arts. He is also among the acquaintances who see Mu Yang off when Mu Yang leaves Qinghe Prefecture with Yuan Yin. 167 258

Personality
Qin Yuan is friendly and easygoing when first introduced, creating camaraderie among his newly assigned team members. 62 In the field, he is decisive and attentive to both civilian and squad safety, as shown by his handling of Yue Miao and the volatile situation at Wu Family Village. 66
He values teamwork and practical knowledge. Qin Yuan stresses that even a powerful individual cannot master every field, and that demon slayers must compensate for one another’s blind spots. 102 He is also conscious of Bureau hierarchy, treating Elder Liang with evident respect during official reporting. 75
Qin Yuan is cautious and procedure-minded in investigations. Although he recognizes the suspicions surrounding Yue Miao and the Wu Family Village residents, he refuses to make arrests without adequate evidence, understanding that rash conduct could damage the Bureau’s standing. 67
He is protective of his subordinates and places their survival above reckless confrontation. When facing enemies beyond the team’s capacity at Linhe Village and during Bao Tian’s ambush, Qin Yuan’s instinct is to organize a retreat and preserve the younger members of the squad. 109 115
