Background

Naruto failed his initial graduation test and was left alone at the Academy while Mizuki manipulated him into stealing the Scroll of Seals. Mizuki revealed that the villagers hated Naruto because they believed he was the Nine-Tails itself, rather than its jinchūriki. 2 3

He later joined Team 7 with Sasuke and Sakura under Kakashi. During the Land of Waves mission, Sasuke took Haku's needles to protect him. Naruto believed Sasuke had died, erupted in rage, and first manifested a one-tail Tailed Beast Shroud. 28

Jiraiya became Naruto's mentor during the Chunin Exam period. He forced Naruto to rely on the Nine-Tails' chakra while falling from a cliff, enabling him to complete the Summoning Technique training. 139 140

After a multi-year absence from Konoha, Naruto returned able to control several Nine-Tails tails, but found himself far behind Sasuke, Neji, Sakura, and Yeyu in rank, authority, and reputation. Yeyu later arranged for Naruto to train with Kakashi to better master the Nine-Tails' power. 282 323 351

Despite jealousy and frustration, he is persistent. Seeing Yeyu's inauguration and the growth of his former classmates pushes him to train until he is exhausted, while learning Rasenshuriken leads him to seek a path toward sage arts rather than abandon the technique. 323 372

He deeply values the few people he considers true friends, especially Sasuke and Sakura. Sasuke's protection in the Land of Waves is a defining moment for him, and Naruto's belief that Sasuke had died immediately triggers his loss of control. 28 180
