Background / History

Early life and Anbu service

Kakashi's father, Hatake Sakumo, committed suicide after abandoning a mission to rescue comrades; the comrade Sakumo saved later condemned him for the mission's failure and the losses it caused. Hiruzen concealed the true circumstances, preserving Sakumo's public reputation as a hero. 327

Sakumo's death led Kakashi to prioritize missions above comrades. Obito Uchiha changed that outlook by teaching him that comrades came before missions. The losses of Obito and Rin, together with Kakashi's Anbu service, contributed to his formerly gloomy disposition and extensive mission record. 327

Kakashi's final day in Anbu coincided with the investigation of a massive crater caused by Hiruzen and Yeyu's spar. The following day, he began work as an instructor. 8

Team 7

Kakashi became the instructor of Team 7: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. He tested them with the two-bell assessment, using the exercise to establish teamwork as the team's central principle. 13 21

He took responsibility for Naruto despite the danger posed by the Nine-Tails. During the Land of Waves mission, Naruto's two-tailed rampage overpowered and severely injured Kakashi, who still attempted to bring his student back to his senses. 29

Association with Yeyu

Despite the power gap between them, Kakashi helped guide Yeyu's development. He taught Yeyu the Lightning Blade and Rasengan, becoming an unofficial instructor whom Yeyu trusted. 24

When Naruto's rampages became a continuing concern, Yeyu gave Kakashi a modified Flying Thunder God kunai. By sending chakra through it, Kakashi can call Yeyu to the scene if Yeyu is available. 62
