Background
Frieza ruled the Saiyans as laborers under his empire before personally destroying Planet Vegeta. The extermination was rooted in his position as the Cosmic Emperor and his fear of the Saiyans' potential, particularly the legend of the Super Saiyan 8 63.
While expanding his empire, Frieza learned of the Dragon Balls and sought immortality. Turles deceived the Frieza Force into sending an elite unit to a barren planet, where Vegeta's group annihilated it. Enraged by the loss and by reports of Vegeta and Raditz's rapid growth, Frieza turned his attention to Planet Namek and ordered the Ginyu Force mobilized 59.
Appearance
Frieza's restrained first form is small and horned, with blood-red eyes, a long tail, and a deceptively overwhelming Ki 59 76.
- His final form is smooth and streamlined, lacking the horns and spikes of his intermediate transformations 77.
- His 100% state greatly increases his musculature 84.
- Golden Frieza is covered in a golden outer layer created by his ultimate evolution 481.
- In a parallel timeline, he appears as the patched, mechanical Mecha Frieza 347.
Personality
Frieza is driven by conquest, immortality, and revenge. He takes satisfaction in ruling from above, regards worlds as assets to be conquered or sold, and casually destroys subordinates who disappoint or question him 59 347 472.
His cruelty is particularly pronounced toward Saiyans and Namekians. On Namek, he kills civilians for amusement and targets Gohan specifically after recognizing him as Goku's son 77. He considers a draw a defeat and reacts to resistance with humiliation, rage, and escalating force 484.
Despite his arrogance, Frieza is capable of strategic planning. He divides his armies according to their roles, recognizes that numbers cannot overcome a vast power gap, and eventually undertakes serious training after realizing the Saiyans' growth has surpassed his expectations 412 472. He also knows when to retreat or comply when faced with a God of Destruction or Raditz's superior power 486 544.
Abilities & Skills
Transformations
Frieza suppresses his strength through multiple physical forms, each unlocking a substantially greater level of power. His final form can be pushed to 100%, while his later Golden Frieza evolution rivals Super Saiyan Blue fighters 76 84 479 483.
- His intermediate forms allow him to increase power rapidly during combat.
- His 100% state reaches a stated Battle Power of 120 million 84.
- Golden Frieza withstands a combined assault during his evolution and easily overwhelms most of Earth's defenders after transforming 481.
Energy Manipulation
Frieza wields highly destructive Ki attacks with precision and range.
- Death Beam — A finger-fired beam used to execute targets, including Jeice and Burter 76.
- Energy Whip — A purplish-red lash capable of splitting an island and cutting through the sea 77.
- Planet Destroyer Ball — A planet-killing sphere used against Namek and repeatedly deployed during his later campaign with King Cold 86 134.
- Death Ball — Used to destroy Heaven after escaping his cocoon prison 365.
- Meteor Strike — In Golden form, he envelops himself in energy and charges through combined energy waves 570.
Physical Combat and Tail Techniques
Frieza combines overwhelming speed with brutal close-quarters attacks. His tail is a weapon for restraint, execution, and high-speed strikes.
- He strangles a subordinate with his tail after receiving bad news 59.
- He whips Raditz into the ground during their Namek battle 80.
- He uses his tail and feet to toy with Kefla while withholding much of his strength 570.
Combat Perception
During the Namek conflict, Frieza cannot sense Ki and relies on sight, sound, and instinct to locate opponents.
- Raditz exploits this weakness with smoke screens and concealed Ki 77.
- Frieza evades Krillin's Destructo Disc after detecting its movement and sound despite being unable to sense its Ki 81.
- He compensates by observing the battlefield from high altitude 82.
Curse of Evil Intent
After Raditz spares him, Frieza is subjected to a Dragon Ball wish that inflicts severe pain whenever he harbors malicious intent or commits evil acts 505 544.
- The punishment affects both body and soul.
- The pain intensifies when he tries to torment Saiyans, though he can force himself through it temporarily 544 569.
- Raditz offers to remove the curse only if Frieza cooperates properly 545.
