Background

Conquest era

Saiyans traditionally located habitable planets, exterminated their native populations, and sold the worlds to outside buyers. Low-threat planets could be assigned to Saiyan children; a full moon would allow the child to awaken their Great Ape power and complete the mission. 6

Their homeworld, Planet Vegeta, was ultimately annihilated by Frieza. Early in the novel, Raditz claims that only four Saiyans remain alive, though later events reveal further survivors who had been dispatched to remote planets before the catastrophe. 6 8 106

Hierarchy and reputation

Saiyan society assigned status heavily according to birth power. Elite warriors were recognized from birth, while those judged weak could be sent away to low-class planets; Tarble is cited as one such royal child. 1 106

The race calls itself a warrior race and prizes battle, strength, and hierarchy. Other civilizations commonly regard Saiyans as barbaric and belligerent, while the Galactic Patrol historically associates them with Frieza's atrocities and treats adult Saiyans as serious threats. 1 104

Ancient Salada conflict

During Raditz's visit to the ancient Saiyan era, Salada is consumed by civil war. Saiyans hostile to Yamoshi's righteous faction use artificial moons to become Great Apes, while the stronger side treats weaker kin as expendable. 524 525

Raditz protects Yamoshi's surviving group and later teaches them the ritual for becoming Super Saiyan Gods. Yamoshi and five righteous companions successfully perform the ritual, establishing the legend of the Super Saiyan God. 525 528 529

Revival

Raditz searches planet by planet for surviving Saiyans, locating Tarble, Afuna, Afuri, and other scattered members of the race. He eventually forms and trains a fifteen-person Saiyan group within the Galactic Justice Alliance. 113 114 115

The group is organized into squads for combat experience against the Demon Clan, with Tarble, X, and Afuna serving as squad leaders. 120

Saiyan Nova becomes a new homeworld suited to Saiyan physiology. As the survivors settle there, form families, and raise children, the race begins a more civilized revival than its former conquest-based existence. 246 473
