Background / History
Raditz reveals that Goku is his younger brother, Kakarot, a lower-class Saiyan sent to Earth as a child to conquer it. Goku explains that he remembers only growing up on Earth and firmly rejects both Saiyan conquest and the destruction of other worlds 1 6.
When Raditz kidnaps Gohan, Goku pursues him with Piccolo. Raditz releases Gohan after using the abduction to bring the two fighters together, then warns them that Vegeta, Nappa, and Frieza pose threats beyond Earth 6 7 8. Goku and Raditz ultimately agree to train together under King Kai in preparation for the coming conflict 8 12.
Personality
Goku is defined by a deep attachment to Earth and a refusal to embrace the Saiyan mission imposed on him. Even after learning his origins, he rejects the idea of destroying another planet and prioritizes Gohan's safety over the conflict with Raditz 6 7.
He is intensely battle-driven, becoming more excited rather than discouraged when facing stronger opponents. This instinct pushes him to challenge Cooler, Majin Buu, Hit, and Jiren even when the gap in power is dangerous 144 406 498 575. Despite this, he can recognize an opponent's fighting habits and alter his own approach in battle 144.
Goku also places faith in his allies. He lets Yamcha take the first fight against the Saibamen and later entrusts Gohan with facing Cell, encouraging his son to believe in his own strength 17 268.

- Uses the Kamehameha as his signature finishing technique 184 405.
- Can fire successive Ki Blasts while maintaining pressure on an opponent 12.

Kaio-ken
Kaio-ken is Goku's amplification technique, used to force explosive increases in speed and power.

- Combines Kaio-ken with Super Saiyan Blue to break through Hit's Time Skip Space 498 499.
- The Blue Kaio-ken combination places severe strain on his stamina and cannot be sustained freely 499.
Instant Transmission

- Combines it with the Kamehameha to attack Majin Buu from an unexpected angle 405.
- Uses it during his battle with Hit to immediately counterattack from a new position 498.
- His speed and teleportation techniques let him pursue combat at a level where most observers cannot follow his movements 264.
Super Saiyan Transformations
Goku repeatedly expands his limits through Saiyan transformations.
- His first Super Saiyan transformation is triggered by extreme emotion over Gohan's danger 142.
- He develops Super Saiyan Full Power, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3 through sustained combat and Hyperbolic Time Chamber training 264 362 405.
- He advances into divine forms, eventually refining Super Saiyan God into Super Saiyan Blue 449 474.
- Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken grants enough force to shatter Hit's Time Skip Space, but at major physical cost 498 499.
