Background
Zhou Chongwen was once emperor of a mortal kingdom, but his reign lasted only two and a half years before he was overthrown. After arriving in Chusheng Market, he spent more than a decade pursuing cultivation, reaching the sixth level of Qi Refining before a damaged foundation halted his progress. He concluded from experience that cultivation depends chiefly on resources and background rather than ambition alone. 4
He attempted several auxiliary paths—including body refinement, formations, artifact refining, alchemy, and talismans—but ultimately retained only a modest skill in talisman making. His failed attempt to enter the Dao through martial arts reached only the second stage of body refinement, costing him time and spirit stones. 5 8
At Refining Lake, Zhou becomes acquainted with Shen Yue and Changqin Wuming. He procures Blood Refining Pills for Shen Yue, helps guard Shen during a breakthrough, provides market information, and purchases artifact-refining materials on Shen's behalf. 5 7 8 9
His support for Shen's artifact refining later becomes entangled with his concern for his son, Zhou Feng. Fearing Shen's rapid progress in formations could damage Feng's confidence, Zhou actively steers Shen toward artifact forging, offers materials on credit, and gives him the damaged but graded Fire Cloud Cauldron. 12
When Zhou Feng nears his array-master examination, Zhou stops supplying Shen with materials and urges him to study formations with Feng instead. Shen soon reveals that he has successfully refined spirit artifacts, disproving Zhou's assumption that he would fail at artifact refining. 20
Personality
Zhou Chongwen is pragmatic and cautious, frequently warning Shen Yue and Changqin Wuming against reckless cultivation, body refinement, and overconfidence. His own failed ambitions and damaged foundation make him acutely aware of the importance of resources, inheritance, and cultivation foundations. 4 5 10
He is also shrewd and paternalistic. Zhou repeatedly exaggerates Zhou Feng's talent and seeks to protect the boy's Dao heart, even attempting to redirect Shen Yue away from array formations after Xuanzhenzi praises Shen's aptitude. 12 23
Despite his calculations, Zhou is sociable and often indulges Changqin Wuming's grand declarations. The two enthusiastically analyze the Jade Void Sword Sect's war against the Nether Sect through maps and improvised tabletop tactics. 7 10
