Background / History

Chen Tong succeeded Chen Qiaoqian as Refining Lake's steward. He regarded the lake as his rightful inheritance, resenting that Qiaoqian—whom he dismissed as a side-branch woman—had managed it before him. Determined to impress the Chen Clan elders, he planned to raise the efficiency of waste recycling and establish himself as a future pillar of the clan. 8

Upon taking office, he replaced the capped quota system with a “more work, more reward” policy without an upper limit. After winning the island guardians' goodwill with higher potential rewards, he used late-stage Qi Refining pressure and severe punishments to establish fear; Li Sheng and Lu Yi were targeted, while two fifth-level Qi Refining cultivators were crippled and expelled from the market. 9

Chen Yunxi later asked Chen Tong to capture Shen Yue and Changqin Wuming. Although he agreed publicly, he privately resented Yunxi for receiving cultivation resources despite failing Foundation Establishment, believing that he himself would have succeeded with even part of her support. 13

When he confronted Shen Yue, Shen Yue's praise convinced him that helping Chen Yunxi resolve her state-of-mind issues would only allow her to eclipse him. Chen Tong consequently chose to shield Shen Yue, gave him two bottles of Spirit Gathering Pills, and permitted him to claim one-tenth of recovered scrap for artifact refining. 14

Personality

Chen Tong is intensely status-conscious and self-important. He repeatedly imagines himself as the Chen Clan's true prodigy, a future Foundation Establishment cultivator, and even a prospective Golden Core ancestor, while belittling Chen Qiaoqian and Chen Yunxi. 8 11 13

His authority depends on a calculated mixture of incentives, intimidation, and opportunism. He grants rewards when they reinforce his position, but cripples or threatens subordinates to make examples of them. 9 He is highly susceptible to flattery, as Shen Yue turns an intended arrest into patronage by appealing to his resentment of Chen Yunxi. 14

Chen Tong's behavior changes sharply before stronger relatives and recognized talent. He fawns over Inspector Chen Yuliang and Artifact Refiner Xu Guanhai, but is hostile toward Shen Yue until Shen Yue's status as an artifact refiner and Flame Heart Island's master becomes undeniable. 14 19 21 23

Chen Yunxi asks him to seize Shen Yue and Changqin Wuming. Chen Tong initially prepares to send Shen Yue to the Law Enforcement Hall, but reverses course when Shen Yue frames protection of him as a way to obstruct Chen Yunxi's advancement. 13 14

The Artifact-Refining Dispute

Chen Tong lets Shen Yue use scrap partly because he considers Shen Yue's refining ambition harmless. When his brother Chen Huan continues wasting materials, Chen Tong uses Shen Yue as a convenient scapegoat for the shortage and attempts to halt Shen Yue's refining. 19 20

Shen Yue's successful refinement of spirit artifacts overturns Chen Tong's assumptions. Summoned to Landscape Manor, Chen Tong immediately abandons his hostile posture when he learns the Chen Clan elders recognize Shen Yue as an artifact refiner. 20 21

Flame Heart Island

After Shen Yue wins the Flame Heart Island competition through a spiritual artifact array, Chen Tong must acknowledge him as Island Master Shen. Under Chen Yuliang's pressure, he offers spirit stones and apologizes for failing to support Shen Yue's application. 22 23
