Background
Orochimaru developed the Cursed Seal Technique from a special enzyme extracted from members of Jugo’s clan, who involuntarily absorb natural energy and enter a sage-like state 358. The technique also draws on Orochimaru’s research into Sage Mode and Living Corpse Reincarnation 13.
Mizuki initially possesses a semi-finished version that he considers less usable and more physically dangerous than Orochimaru’s higher-grade marks 8 13. After obtaining the complete technique, he develops a version of the Heaven Curse Mark containing his own will and senjutsu chakra rather than Orochimaru’s 421.
Appearance
Activation spreads colored markings over the host; deeper transformation changes the body in ways that differ between users 14 424 587 1089.
- Mizuki: His seal begins on his right arm. Its markings spread across his body on activation; after a later eruption, the mark takes the form of a black, jade-like tomoe 14 20.
- Mizuki’s clone: Its transformed form has two horn-like protrusions and crimson eyes with observational and night-vision benefits 424.
- Sasuke: His second state manifests Lightning Sword Wings 587.
- Yukimura: His second state has crown-like horns, elongated arms, bone armor at the joints, and cross-shaped wings of light 1089.
Abilities & Skills
Power amplification
The seal draws on natural energy and can increase chakra and physical performance; the first state draws out bodily potential, while the second shows clearer characteristics of sage transformation 171 278 571.
- Mizuki gains strength and speed when natural energy stimulates his seal, without mutation while his senjutsu chakra suppresses it 171.
- The amount of power a host can withstand depends partly on their potential and ability to control the seal 24 424 586.
- Curse-mark chakra can also enhance ninjutsu and sealing techniques 530.
Transformation
Second-state effects are not uniform: Mizuki’s clone gains relatively modest bodily changes, while Sasuke develops wings and Yukimura undergoes a much larger transformation 424 587 1089. Mizuki’s research indicates that curse-mark chakra can manifest aspects of the user’s mind and will 425.
Soul imprint
Orochimaru’s Heaven and Earth Curse Marks carry soul backups that erode the host’s mind and prepare a vessel for reincarnation 13. Mizuki’s original, semi-finished mark lacks that backup, but its mutated Sage Chakra still erodes his mind 13. His later, self-developed mark instead contains his own will and senjutsu chakra 421.
Risks and Control
- Physical cost: Activation can drain cellular vitality, cause intense pain, and exhaust the host. Mizuki nearly dies during an uncontrolled eruption, while Sasuke collapses after testing his second state 20 587.
- Mental cost: Repeated use can erode the host’s spirit and intensify extreme emotions. Jugo’s transformation can leave him violent and unable to reason 100 278.
- Evil Sealing Method: Suppression depends heavily on the host’s willpower and requires enough chakra to keep functioning. It can restrain a seal without eliminating it 100 233.
- Control requirements: Mizuki identifies senjutsu chakra as central to controlling a cursed seal. A host’s mental will and chakra help regulate its output 421 586.
- Mizuki’s lost anchor: His original seal is rooted in his soul but normally manifests through his right arm. When that arm and its Evil Sealing Method are lost, activation spreads through his body without its usual restraint 526.
Notable Uses and Research
- Mizuki’s injected curse-mark chakra causes a soulless clone’s cells to overdraw themselves uncontrollably, generating dangerous amounts of chakra 49 50.
- His early attempts to make cursed seals for lifeless flesh vessels mostly end in explosions; the few survivors become grotesquely altered 264.
- During an experiment, an activated Cursed Seal pushes against the Hyuga Caged Bird seal on a test subject 384.
- Sasuke ultimately loses his Cursed Seal after defeating Orochimaru 735.
