Background / History
Early encounters with Kangetsu
Hashirama and Madara had already met by the time Kangetsu intervened to save Hashirama’s younger brother, Kawarama, from two Uchiha shinobi. Kangetsu used the encounter to propose temporarily setting aside the Senju–Uchiha feud against their common enemy, the Hagoromo Clan 60.
When Hashirama approached Kangetsu’s forces afterward, he believed Kawarama had already been killed by Kangetsu. His initial worry became hatred and murderous intent. Kangetsu suppressed his own forces’ killing intent and withdrew as Butsuma and Tobirama approached, preventing an immediate battle 61 62.
At a later gathering of the Senju, Uzumaki, and Hyuga clans, Hashirama charged Kangetsu to avenge Kawarama and his cousin, Senju Hojima. Kangetsu defeated him with one punch, absorbed his Asura chakra, and used Susanoo to throw him through the tent entrance into a rock wall 111 112.
Senju leadership and escalating battles
Hashirama became the Senju clan chief after the introduction of a formal clan-chief system. Butsuma remained involved in administration and major battles, while Tobirama handled strategy and clan affairs. Under this arrangement, the Senju recovered from the Hagoromo Clan’s devastation and again stood alongside the Uchiha as a top-tier clan 147.
During Kangetsu’s assault on the Land of Fire’s capital, Hashirama and Tobirama were injured before Hashirama engaged Kangetsu directly. He attacked with an enormous black cleaver, protected Tobirama from a Tailed Beast Bomb with Wood Release, and received repeated chakra assistance from the Sage of Six Paths 168 169 171 172 174.
Hashirama later confronted Kangetsu over the two million lives he had taken. Kangetsu answered by threatening to slaughter the Senju Clan as a celebration of his upcoming wedding, while Madara sided with his younger brother. The ensuing confrontation ended with Hashirama and Kangetsu both grievously injured; Hashirama’s injuries were the less severe of the two 224 225 226.
In another attack on the Senju, Hashirama underestimated Kangetsu’s fused Scorch Style and Ice Style. His Wood Dragons were destroyed, his Sage-enhanced attacks were countered, and Kangetsu captured him. Kangetsu then froze his body and swung him into Tobirama as a weapon. Hashirama survived, with his severed arm restored and Tobirama’s wound healed through his power 237 238 239 240.
Founding Konoha
During a ceasefire, Hashirama secretly met Madara and appeared to seek an alliance. He later urged Madara to establish a village with him, invoking their childhood dream and Kangetsu’s example. Despite Madara’s doubts about reconciling their clans’ hatred, the two agreed and founded Konoha 230 252.
As First Hokage, Hashirama encouraged Konoha’s participants in the Chūnin Exam to demonstrate the village’s strength. When Madara worried that their four teams were too few, Hashirama brushed aside the numbers and told them to give their best effort 260.
Valley of the End and death
Hashirama’s friendship with Madara did not end their rivalry. In their renewed battle, Hashirama deployed a Sage-enhanced Super Wood Golem, but the Nine-Tails destroyed it using natural chakra. Hashirama and Madara then fought directly with a heavy broadsword and the Fire God Fan, respectively 276 277.
After Kangetsu intervened and left both men weakened, Hashirama acknowledged that neither could compare with him. Nevertheless, he and Madara continued their own battle. Hashirama used a Wood Clone as a decoy and stabbed Madara from behind, declaring that he would kill anyone who threatened Konoha—even a friend or family member 280 281.
Kangetsu attacked Hashirama to avenge Madara’s apparent death. Hashirama countered the spreading inferno with a wooden dragon that sprayed water, but Kangetsu’s Fire Phoenix Shines Upon Heaven ultimately reduced him to ashes. Konoha’s citizens witnessed the First Hokage’s fall, and Tobirama succeeded him as Second Hokage 282 283 284.
Return and renewed conflict
Tobirama later announced that he had developed Impure World Reincarnation and intended to revive Hashirama, using his Wood Release to obtain the Seven-Tails. Hashirama subsequently appears again, although the supplied events do not show the precise circumstances of his return 301 447.
After hearing former Konoha shinobi describe their mistreatment and exile, Hashirama condemned Hiruzen and Danzō for ruining the village. He killed both with Wood Release, which consumed their bodies, treating their deaths as necessary to protect Konoha’s founding ideal 447.
Kangetsu later overpowered Hashirama and Tobirama and ordered his followers to keep them alive so they could witness Konoha’s destruction. During the subsequent war, he brought out the brothers bound in blood-red chains and released them; Madara immediately attacked Hashirama, accusing him of exploiting the Uchiha and his brothers 483 509.
Hashirama was left increasingly helpless as Madara’s power advanced. Hagoromo warned that even his assistance would not let Hashirama defeat Madara. Hashirama nevertheless activated Sage Mode and challenged him, while Kangetsu demanded that neither Senju brother’s soul be destroyed because he still intended to use and torment them 517 518.
Appearance
Hashirama is initially described as thin rather than muscular or fat. At the clan meeting, Kangetsu identifies him by his “watermelon” hairstyle and conspicuous scarf 61 111.
- Hairstyle: Bowl-cut-like hair, described as a “watermelon” head 111.
- Eyes: Described as crimson during his cleaver attack on Kangetsu 169.
- Enhanced battle appearance: Radiates golden light when wielding the Sage of Six Paths’ power 225.
Personality
Hashirama remains committed to the childhood dream he shares with Madara. He repeatedly advocates establishing a village despite their clans’ inherited hatred, eventually persuading Madara to cooperate. His lighter side appears in his hearty laughter and casual encouragement of Konoha’s Chūnin Exam teams 252 260.
His concern for his family can become impulsive aggression. Believing Kangetsu responsible for his relatives’ deaths, he attacks without securing an advantage and suffers an immediate defeat. Even after receiving Hagoromo’s chakra, he openly states that his chief desire is to gain the power to kill Kangetsu 61 111 172.
His loyalty to Konoha takes precedence over personal attachments. He is willing to kill friends, relatives, or even his own children if they threaten the village. When confronted with evidence of Konoha’s corruption, he applies that principle to its leadership rather than defending Hiruzen and Danzō 281 447.
Hashirama can underestimate an opponent, particularly when judging Kangetsu’s elemental techniques. He is also capable of acknowledging defeat: after Kangetsu overwhelms him and Madara, he admits that their inherited advantages came too easily and that they cannot match Kangetsu 237 280.
Abilities & Skills
Wood Release
Hashirama develops Wood Release and progressively pushes it to its limit, using enormous wooden constructs for offense, defense, and rescue 159 172.
- Wood Dragon Technique: Twists surrounding trees into giant dragons. A later dragon sprays water to counter Kangetsu’s inferno 237 282.
- Wood Golem Technique: Creates a giant combat construct; the enhanced Super Wood Golem has coiling Wood Dragons and golden light across its body 237 276.
- Wooden Man’s Arm: Produces a giant hand to catch him after Shinra Tensei sends him flying 171.
- Giant’s Arm: Places an enormous wooden arm between Tobirama and an incoming Tailed Beast Bomb 171.
- Cutting Technique: Releases a rain of golden wooden spikes containing both his own chakra and Hagoromo’s 238.
- Wood Clone: Serves as a decoy during the Valley of the End battle, allowing him to attack Madara from behind 281.
- Chakra absorption: Wood Release can absorb chakra, but cannot safely absorb Kangetsu’s fused chakra; absorbed portions would act like poison 237.
- Tailed-beast suppression limit: The Nine-Tails counters his Wood Release with natural chakra, bypassing its usual suppressive advantage 276.
Sage Mode and Natural Chakra
Hashirama masters natural chakra and later explicitly activates Sage Mode against Madara 159 518.
- His cells are associated with the Sage Body constitution needed to absorb natural chakra 167.
- Sage Mode does not close the gap against Madara’s Six Paths power 518.
Asura and the Sage of Six Paths’ Power
As Asura’s reincarnation, Hashirama carries inherited chakra and becomes a recipient of Hagoromo’s direct assistance. He initially does not understand the origin of this power 61 112 172.
- Hagoromo repeatedly pours chakra into him to strengthen his Wood Release 172 174.
- His Thousand-Armed Kannon uses thousands of golden arms to destroy large-scale attacks 174.
- His Great Sun Tathagata Buddha manifests as a massive statue amid golden Buddhist radiance 225.
- Enhanced power can still be countered: Kangetsu prepares fused-chakra explosions specifically to defeat his Hagoromo-backed techniques 238.
Healing and Cellular Vitality
Hashirama survives severe injuries and demonstrates restorative power during the Senju battles 240.
- Restores a severed arm and heals Tobirama’s wound 240.
- His flesh carries sufficient vitality to alter Madara’s chakra when fused into Madara’s body 285.
- Madara feeds his flesh to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, awakening Zetsu remnants associated with the previous Infinite Tsukuyomi 286.
Physical Combat and Swordsmanship
Hashirama’s fighting style emphasizes immense chakra and overwhelming strength rather than Madara’s variety of techniques 277.
- Uses powerful two-handed cleaver strikes capable of producing tremendous force at the point of impact 169.
- Meets Madara’s weapon attacks head-on with chakra-backed slashes and golden blade projections 277.
- Alternates his heavy sword’s attacks between cutting blade light and crushing, club-like blows 277.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Enormous black cleaver: Wielded in both hands against Kangetsu’s Black Blade Masamune; Kangetsu seizes it and lifts Hashirama by the weapon 169.
- Heavy black broadsword: Used against Madara’s Fire God Fan. Hashirama repairs a faint crack by brushing the blade during battle 277.
- Silver blade: Used to stab Madara after distracting him with a Wood Clone 281.
- Scarf: Worn at the inter-clan meeting where he attacks Kangetsu 111.
