History
Warring States Period
During the Warring States Period, the Uchiha had no fixed clan-head position; influence belonged to whoever possessed the greatest strength. Their continual warfare and short average lifespans made Mangekyō Sharingan awakenings comparatively common, though exceptionally strong wielders such as Uchiha Tajima still held major standing within the clan. 4
The clan operated as a mercenary force for nations of varying size. Smaller conflicts followed an informal balance of deployment—for example, one side sending genin would be answered with genin—while major clients could hire elite fighters or the entire clan. 12
A clan rule forbade stopping any member from going to the battlefield. Originally intended for members who had lost loved ones and sought death, it enabled six-year-old Kangetsu to accept a mission against the Hagoromo Clan. 12
Kangetsu's Rise
Kangetsu gained a large personal following by building Scarlet City and incorporating the Nara, Akimichi, Yamanaka, and Onmyo clans. The four clans were eventually permitted to take the Uchiha surname, which they regarded as an honor and confirmation of their integration. 33 93
Under Kangetsu's influence, the Uchiha temporarily allied with the Senju Clan against the Hagoromo Clan. The Uchiha were assigned the western and southern fronts, while the Senju attacked from the north and east; the original arrangement promised the Uchiha seventy percent of the spoils. 74
Kangetsu's faction also used the distribution of Hagoromo spoils to draw the Uzumaki and Hyuga Clans into the war. This shortened a conflict expected to last three years to roughly one year and positioned the Uchiha against future Senju objections with outside support. 88
Clan Split
Tensions between Kangetsu and Tajima culminated in an open rupture when Kangetsu disowned his father. He exposed that two-thirds of the strength nominally held by Tajima was actually controlled by Eiko and departed with the majority of the clan's power and finances. 121
Kangetsu's Scarlet City faction numbered roughly 80,000 people, including about 20,000 Uchiha, approximately 30,000 members of the Four Clans, and around 30,000 captured women from other clans. Tajima retained roughly 10,000 Uchiha; Nara Isshin assessed that Kangetsu controlled about ninety percent of total Uchiha strength. 121
Uchiha Madara and Uchiha Izuna remained with the faction outside Kangetsu's control. Their strength later subdued the remaining Uchiha forces, allowing Kangetsu to leave without immediate concern. 137
Later Era
The Blood Ninja Village retained extensive Uchiha influence and a large archive of techniques collected under Kangetsu's orders. Many ninjutsu lost elsewhere remained in Kangetsu's possession, including Hyuga techniques and much of the Uzumaki Clan's sealing arts. 254 257
By the Konoha era, the Konoha Uchiha were widely regarded as the branch Kangetsu had abandoned: they were chiefly descendants of Tajima's followers, while the descendants of Kangetsu's former subordinates had been taken away. 412
Kangetsu later sought to relocate Uchiha women and promising youths from Konoha to the Blood Ninja Village, arguing that the village needed more pure-blooded Uchiha to preserve stronger Sharingan potential. 345
Organization and Demographics
| Period | Recorded condition |
|---|---|
| Warring States Period | Political influence was determined by individual strength rather than a formal clan-head system. 4 |
| Before the split | The clan's population reached roughly 60,000; around 40,000 were loyal to Kangetsu and concentrated in Scarlet City. 61 |
| After the split | Kangetsu controlled roughly 80,000 people and ninety percent of Uchiha military strength, while Tajima retained around 10,000 Uchiha. 121 |
| Konoha era | The Konoha branch was politically and militarily weaker than the Uchiha forces associated with Kangetsu and the Blood Ninja Village. 412 |
Traits and Capabilities
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan's defining bloodline ability. In the Warring States Period, the Uchiha's extreme casualty rate made Mangekyō Sharingan awakenings relatively frequent. Tajima awakened his Mangekyō after his elder brother's death and ranked among the clan's ten strongest members. 4
- Mangekyō abilities vary by user; Tajima's individual ability was described as exceptionally powerful. 4
- Uchiha Eiko awakened the Mangekyō following Masatake's death and became stronger than Tajima. 6
- Later mixed-blood Uchiha could possess multiple bloodlines, but Kangetsu believed their Sharingan were harder to awaken and generally limited to Three-Tomoe even after awakening. 345
- Mangekyō Sharingan remained a prominent mark of elite Uchiha in later generations, as demonstrated by Uchiha Hayate. 435
Fire Style and Combat Training
Fire-nature chakra is repeatedly associated with Uchiha training. Kangetsu taught Madara, Izuna, and Meigetsu Fire Style techniques, including the Great Fireball Technique; all three possessed fire-natured chakra. 75 76
- Children were initially trained in swordsmanship and taijutsu because these methods required little or no chakra compared with ninjutsu. 6
- Tajima emphasized killing quickly by targeting anatomical weak points and preserving one's own weak points in battle. 6
- Advanced Fire Style techniques demanded immense chakra reserves; Kangetsu's Great Fire Annihilation was described as a Great Fireball amplified by massive chakra expenditure. 81
Elite Techniques
Several notable Uchiha developed abilities beyond standard Fire Style.
- Scorch Style — A fusion of lightning and fire chakra that manifests as highly malleable black flames; Kangetsu specifically prepared it for Izuna. 76
- Storm Release — Madara awakened Storm Release after directly mastering Indra's chakra. 137
- Susanoo — Complete-body Susanoo was wielded by major Uchiha such as Kangetsu, Madara, and Inoue. 141 192
- Rinnegan — Kangetsu's eyes evolved into Rinnegan after his Scorch Style absorbed and merged with Asura's chakra. 176
Relationships
- Senju Clan — Longstanding enemies of the Uchiha; the two clans formed a temporary alliance to destroy the Hagoromo Clan, despite their continuing rivalry. 60 74
- Hagoromo Clan — Opposing force in Kangetsu's first battlefield mission and later the target of a joint Uchiha–Senju campaign. 12 74
- Nara, Akimichi, Yamanaka, and Onmyo Clans — Allied with Kangetsu and integrated into his faction; their members were eventually allowed to take the Uchiha surname. 33 93
- Hyuga and Uzumaki Clans — Recruited into the war against the Hagoromo Clan through a share of the spoils; Kangetsu later acquired major portions of both clans' techniques. 88 254
- Blood Ninja Village — The principal power center of Kangetsu's Uchiha faction and repository of techniques gathered during and after the Warring States Period. 254 405
- Konoha Uchiha — The branch descended primarily from Tajima's followers after Kangetsu removed his own followers and their descendants from Konoha's Uchiha population. 412

- Uchiha Eiko — Tajima's wife and mother of Kangetsu and Meigetsu; awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan and became the strongest member of her household. 6
