Background / History
Founding and Early Dominance
Konoha is founded when Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara agree to pursue their childhood dream of a village together. Hashirama proposes following the example of Madara’s younger brother, Kangetsu. Although Madara initially questions whether the Uchiha and Senju can overcome their irreconcilable hatred, the two reach an agreement during battle 252.
The village becomes an overwhelmingly powerful member of the Five Great Shinobi Villages. Kangetsu estimates that Konoha controls roughly 30% of the world’s benefits, compared with the Blood Ninja Village’s 50%. Its position rests partly on the strength of Hashirama and Madara, who together can challenge Kangetsu 254 255 275.
Konoha participates in Kangetsu’s Kage Conference and the first Chunin Exams. Its twelve exam participants operate under Sarutobi Hiruzen’s direction, using taijutsu to conserve chakra while collecting opponents’ number plates 253 262.
Hashirama’s Death and the Allied War
After Hashirama’s death, Tobirama becomes the Second Hokage. Danzō proposes taking action against Konoha’s Uchiha because of Madara and Kangetsu’s involvement in the disaster, but Tobirama shuts him down. The village loses the overwhelming prestige it possessed under Hashirama 284.
Tobirama uses Hashirama’s memorial to convene a Five Kage Summit in Konoha. He rallies the other great villages against the Blood Ninja Village, offering resurrection through the Impure World Reincarnation Jutsu and negotiating access to seals, supplies, funds, and ninjutsu. He subsequently leads the Allied Army into war against Kangetsu 298 300 301 310.
Hiruzen’s Succession
Tsunade initially receives support to become the Third Hokage. Hiruzen blocks her candidacy by presenting Tobirama’s sealed instructions to Senju elder Lijian. The scroll reveals that Tsunade is Kangetsu’s granddaughter, prompting the Senju elders to conceal her ancestry and support Hiruzen instead 327.
Following the war, Konoha recovers some of its strength faster than the other four great villages, which remain behind it despite absorbing smaller villages 329.
Second Shinobi War
During Kangetsu’s visit, he publicly criticizes Hiruzen’s suppression of the Uchiha and argues that it has stripped Konoha of a powerful deterrent. The other four great villages begin planning an attack, with Mū specifically warning that Tsunade and Konoha’s Uchiha must not be harmed 335 337 338.
A leak concerning Hashirama’s remaining cells intensifies the conflict between Hiruzen and Danzō. Smaller villages caught in the struggle suffer killings, and Konoha’s subsequent slaughter of their representatives establishes its reputation as a destroyer of minor villages. Kangetsu secretly engineers the situation 347 348 350.
Thirty minor villages assemble approximately fifty thousand ninja in the Land of Rain to oppose Konoha. Their leaders adopt a prolonged strategy intended to exhaust the village while it also faces the four great villages. Later, Kangetsu leaves the defense against their final offensive to Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru rather than intervening himself 352 353 369.
Nine-Tails Attack and Renewed Internal Conflict
The Nine-Tails devastates Konoha under Obito’s control, while Obito himself is controlled by Madara. Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze returns to defend the village, and his loyalists pledge to protect both Konoha and Naruto 401.
Five years after the Fourth Hokage’s reported death, Konoha has recovered, but relations between the Uchiha and village leadership are approaching open conflict. Naruto lives under the protection of his father’s faction despite hostility from villagers who regard him as the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki. Itachi discovers materials left by Minato documenting the leadership’s abuses 406.
Disillusionment also drives powerful ninja away. Fire Demon and Lei Jian explain that they left because of the village’s corrupt politics; Fire Demon alleges that the Fourth Hokage’s death was part of an elders’ scheme 415.
Konoha Crush and Regime Change
Kangetsu commissions Orochimaru’s plans against Konoha, including a scheme involving the First and Second Hokage. Orochimaru allies with Sunagakure and prepares to exploit the Chunin Exams as the setting for the attack 425 428.
When the rebellion begins, Kangetsu places Jiraiya in command, orders the elimination of Konoha’s upper ranks, and directs that civilians be expelled. His stated objective is to make Konoha subordinate to the Blood Ninja Village 443.
The revived Hashirama hears testimony from former Konoha ninja, including White Fang, Jiraiya, Fire Demon, and Lei Jian. Accepting Tobirama’s argument that the village must be destroyed to be rebuilt, he kills Hiruzen and Danzō for their role in its decline 447.
Hatake Sakumo then declares himself Konoha’s new Third Hokage, rather than taking a later ordinal. He announces Hiruzen’s removal from office and official history under Hashirama’s authority. Hiruzen’s monument face is replaced with Sakumo’s, while Kangetsu becomes the authority behind the new government 448.
Reconstruction and Destruction
The new regime stabilizes Konoha, but more than fifty clans have been destroyed. Jiraiya later identifies Naruto as responsible for eliminating the Shimura and Sarutobi clans and credits Fire Demon’s group with exterminating more than forty others. The resulting manpower shortage makes reconstruction urgent 448 451.
Jiraiya seeks Tsunade’s return as a deterrent against other villages. She refuses, saying she intends to go to the Blood Ninja Village and resents Konoha’s use of Kangetsu’s legacy to secure victories in two wars 450 451.
Nagato’s Six Paths subsequently attack. After defeating Kakashi and learning that Naruto is at Mount Myoboku, the Deva Path gathers the other bodies’ power and unleashes Super Shinra Tensei, reducing Konoha to ruins. Naruto and Jiraiya confront the attackers amid the devastation 482 483 484.
Sasuke later arrives intending to destroy what remains. Naruto argues that those responsible for the Uchiha tragedy—and the civilians Sasuke might punish—are already dead, while the surviving shinobi are gravely weakened. During this confrontation, Obito announces the Fourth Shinobi World War 493.

Military Strength and Ninjutsu
| Period | Assessment | Principal strengths or weaknesses |
|---|---|---|
| Early village era | Dominant among the Five Great Shinobi Villages | Hashirama and Madara provide exceptional combat power; Konoha holds approximately 30% of global benefits 254 255 275. |
| After Hashirama’s death | Reduced deterrence | Tobirama remains formidable, and the village retains numerous bloodline clans, but its former supremacy is lost 284 298. |
| Postwar recovery | Ahead of the other four great villages | Konoha is the first to regain some strength 329. |
| Sakumo’s takeover | Around the middle overall | Superior top-tier fighters, but severe losses among mid-level ninja and lower Genin and Jonin numbers than its rivals 448. |
| Reconstruction | Among the lowest in manpower | Elite combat power remains outstanding, while mid-level, high-level, and total ninja numbers fall to the bottom ranks 451. |
| After Nagato’s attack | Devastated | Village infrastructure lies in ruins, and surviving shinobi are severely weakened 482 493. |
- Inherited technique collections: Konoha retains the former Uchiha Ninjutsu Pavilion and a sealing scroll compiled by Hashirama and Madara. Both contain numerous techniques created by Kangetsu 301 422.
- Impure World Reincarnation: Tobirama develops his version using Madara’s remarks and materials Kangetsu left among Konoha’s Uchiha 301.
- Reduced clan arsenals: Kangetsu’s seizure of Hyuga and Uzumaki secrets leaves their Konoha branches with diminished technique collections. Their ability to restrain tailed beasts is consequently weakened 254 313.
- Systematic training: The Grass Shadow warns that fifty thousand minor-village ninja cannot be assumed capable of defeating Konoha because its organized training exceeds theirs 352.

- Nara clan — Handles administration under Sakumo. Kangetsu explicitly identifies it as trustworthy 448.
- Hyuga clan — Remains in Konoha after the takeover; Kangetsu instructs Sakumo to monitor it closely 448.
- Land of Fire — Supports Konoha while also paying tribute to the Blood Ninja Village 255.
