Background / History
Origin and capture
The Sage of Six Paths created the tailed beasts, and Kurama’s original body consisted entirely of chakra separated from the Ten-Tails. Even his hair was chakra rather than ordinary physical matter. Before Kangetsu’s expedition, he lived in Rock Forest in the Land of Fire 117 148 150.
Kangetsu sought Kurama as a source of power and prepared a blank summoning scroll for his capture. Their battle began with Kangetsu’s Black Dragon Roar against Kurama’s Tailed Beast Bombs, then escalated into a physical clash. Kurama acknowledged Kangetsu’s strength but argued that a human could not maintain comparable attacks for as long as he could 150 151 152 154.
Kangetsu interrupted another Tailed Beast Bomb with Killing Path Reincarnation, striking Kurama’s head and subduing him. Ocular control and the Uzumaki clan’s sealing chains then left Kurama unable to move or mobilize chakra 155 156.
Using Masamune, Kangetsu drew blood and chakra from Kurama’s right paw and combined them with his own blood on the summoning scroll. The resulting contract bound Kurama to Kangetsu’s bloodline: Kangetsu claimed ultimate authority over him regardless of other controllers, and extended that authority to his descendants. Kurama entered the space beyond the scroll, which turned red and acquired a giant fox image 156.
Kangetsu’s battlefield partner
After the capture, Kangetsu released his immediate ocular control and left Kurama in the summoning realm. Later, calling him a “partner” softened Kurama’s anger enough to secure his cooperation, although he remained furious about his defeat and captivity 157 164.
During the assault on Fire City, Kurama broke through the city wall, incapacitated airborne Senju fighters with his roar, and killed them with a paw swipe. At Kangetsu’s command, he fired a Tailed Beast Bomb into the daimyo’s residence, devastating half the city. He continued obeying while privately judging Kangetsu’s disregard for human life as colder than Indra’s 164 165.
Kurama allowed Kangetsu to stand on his head but denied the same privilege to Inoue. Against Hashirama, Kangetsu forcibly controlled him again, explaining that this was a precaution against the Sage of Six Paths taking control first 168 173.
In the confrontation with Uzumaki Ziyan, Kurama blocked the jinchūriki’s combined attack and recognized the other tailed beasts by name. He then explained the Human Body Seal and warned that Ziyan’s attempt to contain multiple beasts would collapse, particularly without Shukaku as a stabilizing foundation. Kangetsu trusted his assessment and planned to outlast Ziyan’s temporary power 213 219 222.
Nature chakra and separation from the clone
Kangetsu approached Kurama about guarding the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Kurama objected because the statue could suppress tailed beasts, then reacted with alarm when Kangetsu revealed Black Zetsu’s identity and connection to Kaguya 246.
Kurama later fought alongside Madara against Hashirama. He stated that he had promised Kangetsu three acts of assistance and that this was the second—not a sign of friendship with Madara. His newly mastered nature chakra allowed him to resist the suppression normally exerted by Wood Release 276.
A clone, rather than the original Kurama, was subsequently sealed inside Uzumaki Zixin. Kurama and Kangetsu discussed recapturing and absorbing the duplicate to increase his power, but the supplied passages do not document that proposal being completed 284 292.
By the time Kangetsu visited the imprisoned fox in Konoha, the original Kurama was cultivating nature chakra on Dragon Island in the sky. The captive clone did not know it was a duplicate; its false memories ended with Madara summoning it, leaving it convinced that Madara and Kangetsu were responsible for its imprisonment 397.
Transformation and final betrayal
Kurama eventually developed chakra independent of the Ten-Tails’ original nature. He claimed that he could now fight the Ten-Tails, and Kangetsu agreed. This transformation also made Hamura’s tailed-beast-suppressing statue far less effective against him 420 467.
On Heavenly Dragon Island, Kurama revealed that he had consumed the chakra stored in Hamura’s statue. He gave Kangetsu a scroll containing his discarded original chakra and a sample of his new chakra. Kangetsu used the sample to identify a possible direction for further development 474.
Kurama also supplied chakra during Itachi’s resurrection. He warned Kangetsu about the rapid drain, recognized when Itachi began absorbing natural energy, and understood that Kangetsu’s Byakugan transplant was an attempt to create another Tenseigan 479.
Despite their cooperation, Kangetsu ultimately trapped the silver-white Kurama with the God Tree in space. Kurama demanded to know why his own master was killing him. Kangetsu explained that Kurama was a suitable link between Ten-Tails power and nature’s power, then absorbed him until he vanished 526.
Appearance
- Form: An enormous fox with nine tails 161 397.
- Eyes: Scarlet, with beastlike pupils; they become Sharingan when Kangetsu takes ocular control 155 173.
- Original coloration: Described by Kangetsu as a red fox 474.
- Transformed features: Silver claws during his chakra evolution and a silver-white body by his final appearance 474 526.
- Battle armor: Can be covered in externally supplied Susanoo armor, including dark-purple armor bearing black and red flames 173 276.
Personality
Kurama is proud, confrontational, and deeply resentful of being controlled. During his first battle with Kangetsu, he complains that conflicts between Indra’s reincarnation and his brother repeatedly drag him into their struggles. Once immobilized, he fears losing even the freedom to speak and becoming a complete puppet 151 156.
Recognition matters to him. Kangetsu’s use of “partner” gives him a warmth he has not felt in years, and respectful treatment makes him willing to answer questions despite his fear of Kangetsu. He also insists on personal boundaries, allowing Kangetsu—but not an uninvited subordinate—to stand on his head 164 168 219.
His willingness to fight does not mean unquestioning approval of his master. While obeying orders to destroy Fire City, he privately condemns Kangetsu’s treatment of people as disposable targets. His hostility toward Shukaku likewise has limits: he approves of Shukaku being disciplined but would probably intervene if his life were genuinely threatened 165 270.
Abilities & Skills
Chakra Body and Endurance
- His original body is composed entirely of chakra separated from the Ten-Tails 150.
- His immense reserves support repeated high-powered attacks, giving him an endurance advantage over human opponents 154.
- Kurama states that ordinary tailed-beast growth has limits; absorbing his duplicate is proposed as a way to exceed them, not shown as a completed advancement 292.
Tailed Beast Bomb
- Condenses black and blue yin–yang chakra into highly destructive projectiles 151 222.
- Can fire successive bombs of comparable strength 154 155.
- A bomb aimed at the daimyo’s residence devastates half of Fire City 165.
- Kangetsu can augment the attack with blades, Ice Style, Scorch Style, and black dragons 173.
Physical Attacks and Roar
- Uses claws for direct combat and demolition; a single paw strike breaks through Fire City’s wall 152 164.
- His roar generates forceful sound waves capable of knocking several airborne shinobi unconscious 164.
- With nature chakra and Susanoo armor, his nine tails function like piercing weapons against Hashirama’s wooden constructs 276.
Nature-Chakra Transformation
- Blends natural energy with inherited Ten-Tails chakra to form a distinct chakra rather than becoming a being made solely from nature 420 474.
- Nature chakra counters Hashirama’s Wood Release suppression 276.
- His altered fundamental nature greatly reduces the effectiveness of Hamura’s suppressing statue 467.
- Hamura’s consumed chakra assists the transformation, but Kurama acknowledges a difference in quality between their powers 474.
Knowledge and Tactical Advice
- Recognizes the other tailed beasts and addresses them by name 213.
- Explains the Human Body Seal’s origins, its imitation of the Ten-Tails’ body, and the dangers of containing incompatible tailed-beast chakra 219.
- Advises Kangetsu mentally even while Kangetsu controls his movements 222.
- Recognizes natural-energy absorption and understands the significance of an attempted Tenseigan creation 479.
Restraints and Vulnerabilities
- Before his transformation, Sharingan control, Uzumaki sealing chakra, Senju natural chakra, and the Demonic Statue provide means of restraining him 148 246 420.
- Kangetsu’s ocular power and sealing chains together prevent him from moving or using chakra during capture 156.
- The summoning contract binds him to Kangetsu’s bloodline, rather than merely securing a temporary alliance 156.
- His evolved chakra does not save him from Kangetsu’s final God Tree absorption 526.
Clone and Jinchūriki
The original Kurama and the Nine-Tails clone have separate histories. The clone is explicitly identified as imprisoned in Konoha while the original cultivates nature chakra elsewhere 397.
| Character / Event | Connection to the Nine-Tails |
|---|---|
| Uzumaki Zixin | Seals the Nine-Tails clone and secretly becomes its jinchūriki 284. |
| Ziyan’s nine-beast fusion | The Nine-Tails in the opposing group enters Ziyan last. The beasts cooperate willingly because they want Kangetsu dead 314. |
| Uzumaki Yukimi | Later identified as the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki; extraction leaves her gravely weakened 392 400. |
| Konoha attack | Obito controls the rampaging fox, while Kangetsu uses his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan to intensify its violence. Minato breaks Obito’s control 401 402. |
| Naruto Uzumaki | Minato transfers the fox into Naruto with the Eight Trigrams Seal after Yukimi restrains it with chains 402 403. |
Power Used Through Naruto
- Naruto’s rage-driven chakra cloak grows from one tail to two during Kangetsu’s manipulation of the Iruka incident 423.
- His golden fox form combines Nine-Tails chakra with Asura’s chakra, making Samehada’s absorption largely ineffective 455 457.
- Tsunade defeats the restrained manifestation and destroys a Tailed Beast Bomb before it can be fired; Izuna later disperses the golden form with a punch 458 486.
- Naruto destroys Nagato’s Planetary Devastation core with a Tailed Beast Bomb 485.
