Background

Madara is a son of Uchiha Tajima and the elder brother of Hanyue. His siblings include Izuna, Mingyue, and the deceased eldest brother Masatake. During childhood, he is summoned with his brothers to begin martial training under Tajima in the Warring States period. 3 4

Kangetsu later teaches Madara the basic Three Body Technique, kunai arts, and elementary ninjutsu before instructing him in Fire Style. Madara possesses fire-natured chakra, exceptionally vast chakra reserves, and—according to Kangetsu—Indra's chakra and four chakra natures. Kangetsu gives him a scroll concerning advanced fusions involving fire, lightning, and water chakra. 75 76

After Tajima rebukes him for lacking killing intent, Madara chooses to personally train his own subordinates. 25

Appearance

Following his revival beneath black ice, Madara is described as a wild-looking, black-haired man with crimson eyes. When he activates Izanagi, one eye turns blank white. 285

  • Crimson Sharingan eyes in his normal revived state. 285
  • A black-purple chakra aura during combat with Hashirama. 277
  • Black-purple complete-body Susanoo wielding a katana. 141

Personality

As a child, Madara is childish, impatient, and insistent on being acknowledged as an elder brother; Hanyue's casual attitude easily enrages him. He also shows jealousy toward Hanyue, though his behavior is rooted in familial attachment. 3 4

Madara grows into a proud and battle-driven shinobi who values strength, answers setbacks with determination, and refuses to retreat from stronger opponents. Even while overwhelmed by Kangetsu, he challenges him directly and continues adapting after his Susanoo is destroyed. 138 139 140

His love for Izuna becomes a central motivation for his pursuit of greater power. He is described as deeply agitated by the prospect that the Rinnegan could revive others, then immediately uses its power to resurrect Izuna and draw him into the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan. 235 287

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Madara awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan through his craving for power and develops a unique evasion ability.

  • Can transform into a black shadow to avoid physical attacks; the shadow reforms as black liquid before returning to his body. 139
  • Kangetsu estimates that the technique provides no more than five “lives” and destroys two of its uses during their battle. 140
  • His Mangekyō use causes a blood tear after his Susanoo shatters. 139

Susanoo

Madara manifests a black-purple Susanoo that develops into a complete-body form.

  • His complete Susanoo carries a black-purple katana and can clash directly with Kangetsu's complete Susanoo. 141
  • Its destruction leaves him vulnerable and triggers bleeding from his eye. 139
  • Through the Sage of Six Paths' intervention, Madara's Susanoo and chakra are augmented beyond his own normal limits. 141 144

Fire, Scorch, and Storm Release

Madara combines his Uchiha Fire Style training with more advanced elemental techniques.

  • Uses Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique in battle against Kangetsu. 140
  • Uses Scorch Style: Kagutsuchi, producing black flames capable of reducing a large tree to ash. 139
  • Uses Scorch Style: Yasaka Magatama, throwing a black magatama projectile at Kangetsu. 139
  • Uses Scorch Style: Flame Dragon, shaping black flames into a massive dragon. 144
  • Wields blue Storm Release attacks, though Kangetsu notes that Madara had not infused Indra's chakra into them at the time. 138

Rinnegan

After reviving and integrating Hashirama's flesh, Madara awakens the Rinnegan and gains access to its associated powers.

  • Revives Izuna through the Rinnegan. 287
  • Summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 517
  • Uses Limbo: Border Jail to effortlessly incapacitate all nine tailed beasts. 517
  • Understands that the Rinnegan may possess a technique capable of reviving the dead. 235

Six Paths Mode

Madara absorbs the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and becomes the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki.

  • His Six Paths Mode is stated to surpass Obito's equivalent form. 517
  • Overpowers the nine tailed beasts and leaves Hashirama unable to contend with him even with the Sage of Six Paths' aid. 517
  • His Moon Eye does not fully form immediately; Black Zetsu tells him that devouring the God Tree is necessary to obtain the Ten-Tails' true power. 520

Wood Release

After merging Hashirama's flesh with his body, Madara demonstrates Wood Release on a massive scale.

  • Uses Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence against the Allied Shinobi Forces. 505
  • Generates countless tree-like dragons across the battlefield, causing catastrophic casualties before Ōnoki counters part of the attack with Dust Release. 505

Combat Ability and Strategy

Madara is regarded as an Uchiha genius with a broad combat foundation.

  • Trained in taijutsu, ninjutsu, secret arts, kunai techniques, and basic ninja fundamentals. 76 277
  • Can counter substitution and clone tactics while fighting Kangetsu. 138
  • Is not described as especially skilled in taijutsu compared with his other abilities, but compensates through the Sage of Six Paths' chakra manipulation and battlefield strategy. 143
  • Plans long-term control of ninja villages and the tailed beasts while concealing his forces from the wider continent. 287 326

Story Role / Major Arcs

Battle with Kangetsu

Madara challenges Kangetsu after Kangetsu's Ice Style freezes his Storm Release. He counters Kangetsu's cloned kunai and substitution tactics, but is ultimately unable to resist Kangetsu's speed, spatial abilities, and Killing Fist. 138 139 140

The battle escalates into a clash of complete-body Susanoo and divine weapons. The Sage of Six Paths aids Madara from within, allowing him to wield elemental transformations through Amenonuhoko and unleash the Scorch Style: Flame Dragon. 141 142 143 144

Rivalry with Hashirama and Revival

Madara's power gradually declines after the Sage of Six Paths' supplied chakra begins dissipating, allowing Hashirama to eventually fight him to repeated draws. 159

At the Valley of the End, Madara bites flesh from Hashirama's shoulder before being pierced through the abdomen by a Wood Clone. He survives by using Izanagi, revives beneath black ice, and fuses Hashirama's flesh into his wound to pursue the Rinnegan. 281 285

Rinnegan Plan

After awakening the Rinnegan, Madara names White Zetsu, Black Zetsu, and Tobi as his servants, discovers Izuna sealed in the ice, and resurrects him. The brothers begin preparing to control ninja villages, gather tailed beasts, and eventually activate the Infinite Tsukuyomi. 286 287

Madara later regrets involving the Uchiha who remained in Konoha and chooses not to draw them into his plan. Instead, he and Izuna intend to use tailed beasts as concealed weapons of war. 326

Fourth Shinobi World War

Madara appears before the Allied Shinobi Forces and devastates their ranks with Deep Forest Emergence. He dismisses ordinary shinobi as unworthy of the title “ninja” and easily defeats the Four Kage. 505 506

After recovering the Fire God Fan, he absorbs the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, subdues the tailed beasts with Limbo, and enters Six Paths Mode. He prepares to activate the Infinite Tsukuyomi, but his incomplete Moon Eye requires the God Tree's power. 511 517 520

Kaguya's Resurrection

Black Zetsu uses Madara as the vessel for Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's resurrection. Kangetsu interrupts the process with Impure World Reincarnation, resurrecting Madara as a puppet and diverting one-third of the God Tree's power into him. 521

Madara and Izuna ultimately recognize Kangetsu's larger plan and pour their chakra into the God Tree without resistance. 526
